When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth.
I think the reason the preferred meaning of Cains name is 'aquired' 'possession' is because it points to the environment provided by Eve. Cain's reality was one in which human life came from women with God as a helper.
Adam has no mentionable role. This is important because this environment formed a murderer.
God created man and man creates man.
Man develops in her womb.
At this time Eve is queen on her throne.
The first family in the very beginning of history was matriarchal.
This is a very useful thing to know.
Contrast that with her statement when Seth is born.
Rather than 'I' as the beginning of the statement, it begins with 'God' and the baby is not 'a man' but 'offspring'.
The father's role is central as expressed in the next chapter.
Everything is in it's proper order when Seth is born.
I really do believe that's why the preferred meaning for Cain is 'aquired'.
Cain is contrasted to Abel (vanity). Adam and Eve had become aware the salvation was by faith the propmised seed (Gen 3:15 The vanity that they would see the end of the seed the Son of man, Jesus, had set in.
Genesis 3:15 And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy
seed and her

it shall bruise
thy head, and
thou shalt bruise
his heel.
It set up the doctrine of the first born in respect to the second birth following the seed of Christ. Abel the first born again, prophet, apostle and martyr . Seth a continual of the seed. Issacs another and Jacob. The geaneoulgy came to a end when Jesus was born . The fulfillment that began with Abel
Genesis 4:25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name
Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me
another seed instead of
Abel, whom Cain slew.
1 Corinthians 15:22 For as in
Adam all die, even so in
Christ shall all be made
alive.
