To be angry without sin
No better definition of righteous anger.

It would make sense that the bibles command to be angry would be a command to engage in
righteous anger.

I know some falsely believe it to be permission to be angry and struggle to not sin in that anger.
But anger comes from a heart that is either righteous or unrighteous, operating out of love or operating out of selfishness.
The motives of the heart are what make something sin or not sin.
Why are you angry is what makes it one or the other.

So the primary thing that makes anger righteous or not is the heart behind it.

There is a good reason that the original text in view uses two different words for anger.
One word for the anger you are commanded to be anger in.
Another word for the anger you are command to put all of it away.

The bible is not permissive saying all that anger you are to put away, well if you are going to continue in that anyway just try to not sin.
Find a comparable example where the bible is permissive of engaging in what it commands us to put away.

But then why does it give the devil an opportunity if anger is not a bad thing?

Look at the verse again, What gives the devil the opportunity. The anger you are commanded to Be angry in or not dealing with what you are angry about right away?
Remember we are talking righteous anger here, so it is motivated out of love and it is angry against some evil going on.
So what really gives Satan an opportunity?
Righteous anger, or the inaction of the righteous against the evil going on around them that made them angry in the first place?

Perhaps its time to rethink
To understand the angry God as a loving one who acts against evil so as not to give the devil an opportunity in our lives.
To see Jesus making a whip because love encountered evil in its house.

Next time you see an angry person.
Rather then just judge them as wrong, look for why they are angry.
It could be, that they are just being like God, angry at evil because they love.
That would be the angry of God.

Be moved from the anger of man that does not bring about the righteousness of God
into the anger of God that is from love and moves quickly in love against evil and keeps the devil from having any opportunity.

I would offer the bible uses different words to express anger. One. . "be angry yet not sin" . as if God was commanding it. and another ."In your anger do not sin". The later seems to fit more appropriately . As a fallen creatures we are angry not reaching the intended goal of to live forever, we suffer daily which can causes anger against God by the god of this world the accuser of the brethren accusing Christians day and night ."Did God say this or that attempting to cause doubt. .

Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Ephesians 4:26In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are "still"angry,

In that way in our anger we can look for fault in others (the log in the eye). Not understanding that God brings people into our lives to develop his gifts. We should be careful when entertaining strangers the could be sent as messengers of God to share the gospel with one another as the fruit of His Spirit .

James says mans anger does not bring about the righteousness he desires of us.

Colossians 3:8 but now do ye also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, railing, shameful speaking out of your mouth:

Colossians 3:8 but now do ye also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, railing, shameful speaking out of your mouth:
Does Love get angry?

Does God who is love get angry?

It is a false dichotomy seeing anger as opposed to love.
INDIFFERENCE & APATHY are not from love.
Should you let everyone go to hell without a word of warning.
Apathy is against others and for yourself.
The error on the left of the true path

Selfish, fleshly, out of control anger, AKA the anger of man is also not from love.
It is against other for yourself.
Selfishness is against others and for yourself
The error on the right of the true path

But True love gets angry, we know this is the ideal because God gets angry and Jesus gets angry.
Godly anger is against others in their sin and it is for them at the same time.
It usually costs you what you want and is a sacrifice on your part.
Godly Anger has a right time and place and it is something meant to move you to action against evil in your midst.
If you reject to embrace Gods anger and Be ANGRY and ACT in it, the devil and those who serve him get an opportunity to hurt the ones you love with their evil plans.

So put away indifference and apathy and the selfish anger of man and take up the anger of God.

Just as being like God and like Jesus are good.
Godly Anger is Good

Hate evil, O you who love the LORD! - ps 97:10

I, wisdom, dwell together with prudence, and I find knowledge and discretion. To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech. Counsel and sound judgment are mine; I have insight and strength - pr 8:12-14

Hatred of evil is wise.

No, you can be angry at people who sin because you love them.
just like God gets angry with us when we are sinning.
but that does not mean he does not love us, it just means he does.

Matthew 5:22 But I say unto you, That whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment: and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council: but whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of hell fire.

Ephesians 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Ephesians 4:26In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are "still"angry,
Just an informational comment:

The Greek verb for "be ye angry" is in the imperative (command) mode - thus your first translation above is the Greek translated literally.
In the second: "in your anger do not sin" the translators used the "permissive imperative" interpretation. This is completely viable from the perspective of the Greek language. An imperative can be a direct command or can be read more as a mere permission (depending on the context).

Also interesting.
Godly anger is not spread around to those who do not deserve it.
Being angry with one person causes you to be angry with another, i would ls say is a good indicator of ungodly anger.

Without a cause.
This could be addressing being angry based on your assumptions also.
When you do not actually know that the reason for being angry actually exists.
Something I have seen way to much of.
People being angry because of what they think without actually knowing anything for sure.

Agreed. Jesus got angry, but had just cause. Paul got angry, but had just cause.

You know getting mad/angry...so what? That in its self is not sin. Now I don't care to get angry.. yet I don't..or should say I am not fighting at that moment to not sin. I make sure I don't let the sun go down and still am angry.

Now "righteous" anger for ME is never me its Him. For in those moments its ALL the holy Spirit and the word always comes to mind. I mean scriptures. Truth be told... I would rather just get angry vs righteous anger. For me again I'm seeing into someones heart and seeing the true motives and He the king of kings is doing the talking. Where I want to say NOTHING! Maybe some think it means them being mad at someones sin I don't know. never went around asking.

I believe one must be walking in the spirit not the flesh.

To me the whole topic is about what kind of anger to take up and what kind to put away.

I was walking down the street one day and some people behind me where cursing and mocking Christ.
But the time I hit the corner I had written them off but then I got convicted by the Spirit for not being angry.
Not only at what they where saying but at them as someone who cares and says something to warn them.

Not everyone can accept it but our lack of anger in the face of sin can it self be unloving faithless sin on or parts.

I was faithless regarding the Gospel that day,
Unkind to evil men, but letting them go on there way to hell.
First time I every got convicted for not being angry.
