I notice that had no sons that became king after him. Instead, his brother became king next and then after that - Zedekiah - his father's brother. So the genealogy leading to Jesus was trimmed off a bit there. Still, it was counted as being genealogy leading from David, since David was told his kingdom would never end.

Jer 22:30

30 Thus saith the LORD, Write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days: for no man of his seed shall prosper, sitting upon the throne of David, and ruling any more in Judah.
KJV

Both Mary and Joseph were descendants of David. Women aren't usually used in Bible genealogies. But God can do anything He wants. And the important thing, it looks like - was that both the genealogies of Joseph and of Mary show that Jesus was a descendant of David, figuratively. Though of course, He was conceived by the Spirit, and not through the flesh.

For the Hebrews, a genealogy usually was to give a message. There are many theories about what message Matthew was giving with this genealogy.

The obvious one was to show the Lord as a Jew descended from David. Mathew gave it in three groups of 14 generations each to make 42 generations. In Revelation the numbers 1,260 days, 3 1/2 years, and 42 months are important. All these numbers add up to 42 months.

Another interesting point is the inclusion of four women in the genealogy. Tamar had disguised herself as a prostitute, Rahab was a prostitute, Ruth was a Moabite, and Bathsheba was a woman David had an affair with.

Jer 22:29-30 . . O land, land, land, hear the word of the Lord! Thus said
the Lord: Record this man as without succession, one who shall never be
found acceptable; for no man of his offspring shall be accepted to sit on the
throne of David and to rule again in Judah.

The wording "to rule again in Judah" indicates that the curse on Jeconiah's
royal progeny was limited to the era of the divided kingdom with Samaria in
the north and Judah in the south. That condition came to an end when
Nebuchadnezzar crushed the whole country and led first Samaria, and then
later Judah, off to Babylonian slavery.

When Messiah reigns, the country of Israel will be unified. His jurisdiction
won't be limited to Judah within a divided kingdom, but will dominate all the
land of Israel. So the curse doesn't apply to him.

Ezek 37:21-22 . .You shall declare to them: Thus said the Lord God: I am
going to take the Israelite people from among the nations they have gone
to, and gather them from every quarter, and bring them to their own land. I
will make them a single nation in the land, on the hills of Israel, and one
king shall be king of them all. Never again shall they be two nations, and
never again shall they be divided into two kingdoms.
