I guess this verse has different meanings for different people. To me it has always revealed the "triune" man. That is body, soul and spirit. The soul and spirit are so closely knit together that some people do not see or believe they are actually two! Yet this Verse clearly shows that the Word of God can "divide asunder" the soul and spirit of man.
The Apostle Paul fully understood this. As evidenced when he wrote:
1 Thessalonians 5:23 23And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our LORD Jesus Christ.
