To save some hours of toil and strife;
I took a shortcut through the night.
The dark enfolded bleak and tight;
I fain could rush my urgent flight.
My leg encountered unseen rock;
That nearly dropped me on the spot.
Yet onward in the flowing night;
Stumbling through my waxing fright.
I heard a noise behind me hush;
Or did I hear it in my rush?
Something from behind untold
Surely not of terror void.
And yet from first a quiet hiss;
Just now my ears to hear it clear.
There was indeed an unseen chase;
Of what I could but only fear.
There was no turn nor place to hide;
And full escape could not be flown.
Yet hurried on as best could be;
From the unknown anguish flee.
Maybe it’s not so bad at all;
My pursuer may be kind of heart.
Perhaps the gentle Fizzlebee;
Bearing gifts for my joy and glee.
But Fizzlebees are sweet and soft;
Behind me came sure whizz and grunt.
Oh God please not the Gunderscream;
That haunts my dreaded dreams.
A Fizzlebee it may not be;
Fades fast my fondest dream;
I could handle even the Thunderbip;
Just not, Good Lord, the Gunderscream.
It gained rapidly despite the dark;
That slowed and hampered me;
Its breath was hot upon my neck;
And fear pulled me to flee.
But desperation turned me, so to face;
Direct my fate to see;
To try to brave the Gunderscream;
As grace alone would bare to me.
But Fizzlebee nor Gunderscream;
Were not my fate beheld;
But only the unhappy Sadderwortz;
Sulking past me in the gloom.
Oh Lord I know it must be learned;
By all who walk this spot;
Neither Fizzlebee nor Gunderscream;
Are our appointed lot.
When will I learn what I claim to know;
That naught can calm but thee;
Neither Gunderscream nor Fizzlebee,
Should ever worry me.
But the real dread is the Sadderwortz;
A life in joyless misery;
For sweets and dreads can cause deep hurts
When faith is not our plea.
