I used to have 2 black powder revolvers, but I traded one for a 357 mag, because I needed a carry gun.
I had a 36 and a 44, now I have just the 44. In many ways I wish I hadn't traded. I liked that 36 a lot and was using it as a carry gun. Anyway well sad now.

I recall Elmer Keith in his book Sixguns relating what he was told by two Civil war veterans, one from each side, who related "the 36 caliber round ball would take the fight out of the man", they didn't say that about the 44, nor did they say that about the 36 caliber conical bullet. We know the Union Army never has a contract for paper pistol self contained cartridges with round ball, only conical, so they must have cast their own or had some access to them. After the first 6 shoots they would have used the Union issue cartridges with the conical.

Imagine a 3/8 inch diameter ball hitting you just fast enough to go through your clothes and about half way into your body, including splintering any bone that it smashed into. That ball would severally flatten out as it slammed through you at about the same speed a man could jam a same sized piece of round stock into you. I can imagine the fight would be over.

I don't like to imagine such things, it keeps my mind form being "stayed on Him", just related what Elmer was told. I know a friend of mine just got started in Muzzleloader deer hunting, used a 45, the first deer taken was impacted in the lung area, the ball hit a rib on the way in, bounced of the hide and rolled around inside releasing all it's energy inside, a quick harvest as quickly and painlessly as possible.
Soon there will be no more war, and no more needing to kill for food.
Best wishes

I've had bad luck pushing lead too fast. Tumbling. Keep the lead on the lighter side. If you want to push faster, then shoot jacketed.

so what is your load of 231? no one talking about pushing it too hard, 3.7 didn't give correct ejection and return to battery.

Never used 231 with 9mm. Was just sharing some things I've learned more generally. I'd suspect 3.7 to be a little light for a 115 LRN. If you get good ejection with factory and weak ejection with your load, then that would reinforce my suspicion. What gun are you shooting this in anyway?

Do you know how to look for signs of pressure?
