Matthew 2:1-11
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel. Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

The chief priests and scribes through the scriptures knew where Jesus was to be born. However, they did not have the heart to go and worship Him. The wisemen on the other hand, traveled far following the star in the east. When they finally found the young child, their hearts were filled with overwhelming happiness and joy. The wisemen not only knew the scriptures but also believed. They understood why Jesus had to be born, as the prophecy of the savior was being fulfilled right before their eyes. Although it may seem like the people of the world believe in different Gods and have differing views or standards, that is simply not reality. Through the Word of God, it is clear to see that there are only two kinds of people in this world. There are people who believe in God and there are people who do not. The chief priest and scribes were supposed to be people who knew the scriptures well, followed the law well and believed God. However, when Jesus was born, the only thing they did was try to help Herod to seek out and murder Jesus. This is the work that Satan does to mankind. Satan makes us trust in ourselves and in our thoughts, making us think that we are right, so that we do not believe in the Word of God.

Matthew 1:21
And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.

If the chief priests, scribes or Herod believed in the Word, would they have even thought about killing Jesus? They may have been in the highest of positions in the world but what good did any of that do for them in the end?

God sent us Jesus to save us from our sins. God has given us the gift of eternal life unto all of us who believe. I thank God with all my heart when I think about the salvation of our souls and the gift of eternal life that He has given us, freely and by grace. Is there anything worth more in the entire world than this?
