I believe it is important to know what the Holy Spirit would say so we can be led more by the Lord. Oftentimes culture will give out messages like “ the more the merrier “ and “ he with the must toys win” .

However Jesus tells us the opposite that life doesn’t consist in the abundance of possessions.( See Luke 12:15)
The Holy Spirit says many other things which are often very different from what culture says.

How have you heard his voice? What is the Holy Spirit saying to you?

I can't hear. I think I'm deficient in many ways.

There's been strong impressions but they may be from a fear place or self preservation (spirit of the world IS NOT the SPIRIT OF TRUTH )

What Jesus says 100% is what I'm getting.

Suffering in the flesh is the way.

I want to get out of the world's grasp, just how to keep still and wait, when there is so much to be done ...

How do people know they have received the Holy Spirit?

At the moment we believe and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and King by receiving His Blood that takes our sins away and His Body that gives us His Righteousness, we are SEALED with the Holy Spirit and become the Temple of the Holy Spirit and belong to Jesus Christ and the Father.

However, we need to ask and wait and press in for the baptism with the Holy Spirit....for us us to be endued with power from on high to be a true witness of Jesus Christ in the Earth.

I was saved at 6 years old but, did not receive the baptism with the Holy Spirit until I was 25 years old. Suddenly, the scriptures in the Holy Bible opened and I fully understood what I was reading.....AMAZING!!!! Such depth and height to the Word of God....

I am completely convinced....NO ONE KNOWS ANYTHING UNLESS THE HOLY SPIRIT SHOWS OR TELLS THEM. We can know all the Bible, speak and read Hebrew and Greek, quote every word and still know NOTHING unless the Holy Spirit gives us understanding.(y)

The holy spriit knew that I was lying, so asked me "who is lying? not say that "you are liar"
It sounds like a different result.
A bit like Satan's question to Eve.

The Holy Spirit's main work is to take what is of Christ and make it real in our experience (John 16:12-15). Doubt any spirit that does not in some way lead you closer to Jesus. The Holy Spirit also dwells in us to make us Christlike. And the Holy Spirit does not big note Himself. He glorifies Lord Jesus. Anyone who says otherwise is a false teacher or prophet (there are too many of both) and should be ignored.

How do people know they have received the Holy Spirit?
Those filled with the Holy Ghost spoke in tongues. (Acts 2:1-4, 8:12-17, 10:44-48, 19:1-6)

Consider - Acts 8:12 below -The Samaritans believed Philip’s message. But they did not receive the Holy Ghost at that time. This is not an opinion. It is specifically stated in scripture. How did the people know that they had not received the Holy Ghost? We know the people knew that receiving the Holy Ghost was accompanied by outward evidence. See verse 14, they sent for Peter and John to assist the Samaritans in receiving the Holy Ghost. Also, ask yourself. What did Simon SEE (comprehend) that convinced him that the Samaritans had received the Holy Ghost? (Verse 18)

Acts 8:12-18
"But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.
13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.
14 Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
15Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given"

Acts 2:4
“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”

Acts 2:33
"Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear."

Acts 10:44-46
“ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
For they heard them speak with tongues,”

Acts 19:6
“And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues…”

It seems to me that the first thing we need to know about the Holy Spirit is that the Holy Spirit is God and God never, ever, disagrees with God. If we or someone tells us it is the Holy Spirit who gives information, we still need to check that information with scripture.

In my experience, when the Holy Spirit imparts insight to someone, He does so through Scripture. It is by reading Scripture that the Holy Spirit imparts understanding of the Scripture we may not have had before.

The indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit is what guides the Sanctified Believer to understand Scripture through Spiritual eyes/understanding. Something newly converted Believer can not do, for they are still feeding on milk and honey, and not able to feast on the meat of the Written Word.

(my thoughts)

We must read John chapter 14 through 16 and see how the Holy Spirit led the early church found in the book of Acts.

Jesus is the one who taught on the Holy Spirit more than any other person in the Word of God. And Jesus said what the Holy Spirit will do for us and what HE will do once Jesus left the earth.

John 14:16-18, 26

16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you. 18 I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you.

26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.

John 16:7-9

Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you. 8 And when He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 of sin, because they do not believe in Me;

Jesus said :

The Holy Spirit is the "Helper" in the greek known as the "paraklētos " one who comes alongside to help.
The Holy Spirit was sent by the father and Jesus said HE will be with you and will be in you.

The Holy Spirit will He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment of sin, because they do not believe in Me;
The Holy Spirit will teach you, be with you forever, bring into remembrance everything Jesus has said.

The Holy Spirit mission is what Jesus said HE would do for 1 the believer 2. the sinner, 3. work of God

Jesus said in Acts 1:8
“But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

Yes, the Holy Spirit empowering is greatly needed today and IS for today AS HE( the Holy Spirit) was needed in the early church.

That has not changed. Jesus never said The Holy Spirit would come but You will not need him anymore or his Gifts when I have my Word written on paper.

The word Abide with you forever means FOREVER. "In you and upon you".

Jesus did not lie.

I believe that a person receives the Holy Spirit when they receive the Lord Jesus. Jesus has promised to send the Holy Spirit ( see John 14:16-18). I believe that there are different proofs of faith in Jesus. When you entrust your salvation to Jesus, this is an act of faith. I think one ought to be cautious of looking to oneself and searching constantly if one has faith. I have been down that route and I can say it is a trap. Look to Jesus and pray “ Lord, I trust in you”. Rest in him and rely on his love for you.

@Rev316 , I have found searching the Scriptures to be a great comfort to me. There is a lot of hope and encouragement in there. John 6:37 has often been a encouragement for me.

How have you heard his voice? What is the Holy Spirit saying to you?
the Holy Spirit preached the gospel and reminds us of everything Jesus taught in his earthly ministry

“Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”
‭‭John‬ ‭14:23-26‬ ‭KJV‬‬

the Holy Ghost will always speak these words

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”
‭‭John‬ ‭6:63‬ ‭

“And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭16:15-16‬ ‭

“In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.”
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭1:13-14‬ ‭KJV‬‬

It’s not about what he will say but what he said and sent out for us to believe

“Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭3:21-22‬ ‭KJV‬

“And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭4:17-19, 21‬ ‭

God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.”
‭‭John‬ ‭4:24-26‬ ‭

“He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true.

For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.

He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.”
‭‭John‬ ‭3:31-36‬ ‭

the Holy Spirit preached the gospel through Christ and brings the same gospel to us it remains the same as then same words will save us

There is a warning to us in this regarding the holy spirit. The first church as Jesus established it was a denomination called The Way. The doctrines of that denomination died out after about 500 years, our churches accepted doctrines today are very different. The difference was brought on by councils of men who said their authority to add to the church was given to them by the holy spirit.

If you search the reports of the first councils of the church that are still available it will varify this. Our net can act like a huge library of books of information.

Jesus has never stopped Being the head of HIS Church. Nor has the Gospel message ceased to be preached. The Power of God which is the Gospel message as Paul said still is able to save men and set them free. Jesus said the gates of hell would not prevail, no authority, denomination, council, or pope, past, present, or future will stop God.

The biblical record speaks to the truth you've stated. The only thing I would add is that doctrine modifications can be seen as early as 325 A.D. At the Nicene Council, the forerunners of the Roman Catholic Church made the decision to remove the all powerful name of our Lord Jesus Christ in association with water baptism. This is in direct opposition to scripture.
But praise God throughout history many have fought to continue sharing the faith that was first given unto the apostles.
