To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything and your heart will be wrung and possibly broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact you must give it to no one, not even an animal. ~C.S. Lewis

We are designed to love, a love of many different forms. The love of a friend, the love of something, the love of passion, sacrificial love, self-love, and love of loyalty.

All are chemically responsive to certain emotions and actions. We are hardwired to love. But what do we do when this love is shattered? We actively set ourselves up to be vulnerable. Vulnerable to the pain of death, rejection, abuse, addiction, or heartache.

We must balance each type of love and to use an example if you understand civics, a checks and balances kind of mindset.

If we pursue the healthy forms of love in the love of a friend, the love of something, the love of passion, sacrificial love, self-love, and love of loyalty. Then we can be better prepared for the collapse in one of those areas.

Love of a friend: A friend who will be there for you no matter what. Who will fight for you and be the voice of reason?

Love of something: Healthy hobbies like art, hiking, or reading, for example.

Love of passion: dating, romance

Sacrificial love: parent to child, spouse to spouse, caregiver to another, volunteering to help others in need.

Self-love: taking the time to care for yourself. Not in selfishness, but as you see red flags in your physical health, mental health, or spiritual health, you slow down to address the problem.

Love of loyalty: we are, in my ways, attracted to the herd mentality. Sociological in need of humans to unite in groups for survival. We were never created to be alone. We need each other for survival.

If we can harness each of these 6 types of love, we will be better prepared if one or more were to shatter. If one were to shatter, the other 5 would come in to check and, if need be, to help balance you.

Great post!
C.S. Lewis also wrote about a man who could resist his tempter by a love of tripe and onions. (Screwtape Letter #XIII)
