I used to know the reason for The Great Rift but forgot it. As I remember, at the time I thought it was childish.

The Schism of 1054 between the churches of the East and the West was a gradual process of separation
that began in the first centuries of the Christian era and continued through the Middle Ages, culminating
in a disagreement over the Filioque clause inserted into the Nicene Creed by Charlemagne’s court theologians.

Pretty sad, Jesus tells us to lean not on our own understanding, they did and created the schism, good thing Christ is not reached in religion, but in relationship.

One of the primary causes of the Great rift between the Western Church and the Eastern Church occurred because of the Nicene Creed, the Confession of Faith, the Filioque. This has been the subject of great controversy between Eastern and Western Christianity.

It is a term that refers to the Son, Jesus Christ, as an additional origin point of the Holy Spirit. besides the Father. It is not in the original text of the Creed, attributed to the First Council of Constantinople (381), which says that the Holy Spirit proceeds "from the Father", without additions of any kind, such as "and the Son" or "alone".

In the late 6th century, some Latin Churches added the words "and from the Son" (Filioque) to the description of the procession of the Holy Spirit, in what many Eastern Orthodox Christians have at a later stage argued is a violation of the Council of Ephesus, since the words were not included in the text by either the First Council of Nicaea or that of Constantinople. This was incorporated into the liturgical practice of Rome in 1014, but was rejected by Eastern Christianity.

Simply put, the Filioque, Confession of Faith was changed. The old confession stated that, "The Holy Spirit' proceeds from the Father." The new confession stated that, "The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son." To this day there is disagreement between the Western and Eastern Churches.

It would seem to me that the latter confession is correct. When Jesus appeared to the Apostles, after His Resurrection, He said (paraphrased), Peace be with you and then breathed on His apostles and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit". I believe this is a clear indication that the Holy Spirit can also proceed from Jesus.
