The image of God is a direct reflection of who God is character wise. The Bible says we are made in his image, but that just means we are like him. He made us into a direct reflection of who he is. We react in ways that the animals don’t, we are made to rule over them and we are worth more than them according to the Bible. Not to gas the human race of course. We have sinned and are now fallen. Everyone knows humans are not good.

So to answer your question the image of God is the idea that humanity was created in the likeness of God, as a reflection. But it does not mean we ARE God, not even close.

My thoughts on 'Our Being Made in the Image of God'

The most basic principle of the Christian moral life is the awareness that every person bears the dignity of being made in the image of God. He has given us an immortal soul and through the gifts of intelligence and reason enables us to understand the order of things established in his creation. God has also given us a free will to seek and love what is true, good, and beautiful.

Unfortunately, after the fall, our free wills, intelligence, and the ability to reason became corrupted/clouded, thus the proclivity to sin and rebel against God.

I think a good start on understanding what it is, is to have a look at the Greek words used in 2Cor v4v4 for "image," which is "eikon," and "express image" (of his) "person" in Heb 1v3, which are "charakter" and "hupostasis."
