So I’m re-reading the OT right now, about to finish Deuteronomy. So far I haven’t come across many references to the afterlife. I know about Sheol and Abraham and others being “gathered to their ancestors” or “joining their fathers in death” (paraphrasing).

Why are there not more mentions of the afterlife? Or are there? Again I’m only in Deuteronomy at the moment so perhaps there are more coming before I get to the New Testament.

Thanks for your input.
The only NECESSARY mentions of eternity in the New Testament come from Jesus. No more are really needed are they? Paul addresses it as well, and a couple of the other Apostles too. Do a "search" for "afterlife kjv scriptures" and see what you come up with.

Come on dude, no need for a backhanded, insulting comment like that. Why do so many people on here have to be so rude?

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.

For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judgment also, because he is the Son of man.

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth;

they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation.”

(From Acts 23:6) Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “My brothers, I am a Pharisee, descended from Pharisees. I stand on trial because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead.” 7 When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. 8 (The Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, and that there are neither angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees believe all these things.)

That's a good one, PC- I actually had this in mind yesterday, but I wasn't sure how to explain it- his blood cries out- and the life is in the blood! So in some manner of speaking, the life of Abel was still in action. Right off the bat, with the first human death, the first murder victim, we have a very subtle explanation that the power of death is limited.
So what is your take on this descriptive scripture?

Well, the Lord's question to Cain "Where is your brother"? And Cain's answer "I don't know, am I my brother's keeper" are interesting. Many of us are taught as kids that this is just Cain lying and trying to cover up his sin, but.... what if he wasn't lying? Did Cain even fully understand what he did?
"Where is Abel?" That's a pretty good question. He died, but, where is he? Maybe Cain really means it when he says "I dont know". How could he know? Was death ever really explained to him before? I dont think it was. "Am I my brother's keeper?" IOW "is it my business to know where he is?"

Cain doesn't seem like he cares very much, but the Lord seems to want him to know, which is good, because we wanna know too. The Lord then answers the question- the earth opened her mouth to recieve
his blood- his life- which is still calling on the Lord from within the earth!

The modern day sadducees will tell us that this is all "poetic language" and sure, maybe there is some kind of poetic narrative structure to the scriptures; but I dont think that means we can't find the truth in it. The point of this whole episode in the scripture could very well be explaining life after death as much as it explains sin.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who's answered this earnestly and with examples from the Old Testament. You've given me some things to think about.

Not for nothing, but that is just what I was thinking when I read your OP.

Of the Threads of yours I have read, you always pose a situation/question without offering any personal observations/thoughts of your own in the OP.

This type of Orriginal Post can be viewed in two ways:

1) PFISHING. Pfishing is a comment that seeks to discover information personal or otherwise from any person who responds to the comment posted in the OP. This type of OP is almost always authored by a troll, seeking information. They can discover what a persons views are on various hot button topics of Theology and such. ie: Water Baptism, OSAS, and such.

2) PFARMING. Pfarming is when a person authors an OP such as the one you authored on this Thread which asks questions, but you do not provide any of your thoughts/beliefs/ideas concerning the answer(s) to the question(s) posed in the OP. Pfarming is usually designed for the author to receive the fruit of other Members efforts to search through Scripture to answer the question(s) posed in the OP. This way, the author (you) obtains all the relevant Scriptures needed to answer the question(s) without having to exert any personal energy searching Scripture for the answer(s). It allows the author to copy the information provided by other Members to a file on their computer that they can reference any time they wish.

While this is not actually considered trolling, it is a wee bit rude IMO, because it displays a lazy attitude by the author of the OP towards their own Bible Study efforts.

IF I COULD CHANGE ONE THING HERE ON CC:

It would be to prevent any Threads authored designed for pfishing or pfarming. I would simply not allow them to be published. IMO, this would greatly enhance the overall experience here on CC.

So, quesiton being, why do you not offer any of your personal thoughts/ideas when you author a Thread Topic?

Well, I appreciate Kris's posts because I think he gives us things to think about, discussion starters. Also, he does participate in the threads, so I'd say that it's not phishing or pfarming. He contributes in multiple ways. I understand that these threads aren't for you, but they bless others. Just go find the threads that bless you and where you can be a blessing.
