The term "Beat around the Bush" is from a medieval sport called "Bat-Fowling" where people would beat flightless birds to death with bats. To give the birds a fighting change they would beat around the bushes they lived in and send them running.

Sport?
If they are hunting for meat, I can understand. It's only a sport though if the birds have electric cattle prods.

The song "Pop Goes the Weasel" is about an acholic who needs to pawn his stuff to make ends meet. "Ring around the Rosie" is about a plague. The ring around the Rosie refers to the boil that the infected would grow. The pockets full of posies was used to cover the smell. Ashes to ashes refers to burning all the possessions of the infected and we all fall down is everyone dying.

The origon of " giving someone the finger" back in the day... if English archers were captured by the French they would cut off their bow pulling finger to prevent them from being able to shoot....so in an act of defiance when English soldiers saw the French, theyd throw up their middle finger to taunt them that not only did they still have their finger but they planned on using it to kill them.

Now...is this true... probably not, but was I impressed all the same, yes, yes I was.

doctors invented the chainsaw in 1780 to make the removal of pelvic bone easier and less time-consuming during childbirth. It was powered by a hand crank and looked like a modern-day kitchen knife with little teeth on a chain that wound in an oval.

natural flavouring called castoreum is a thick, odorous secretion obtained from the anal glands of beavers. It is used to give a vanilla flavour to some dairy products and desserts
