Man has added so much to scripture that bible study needs to include looking for who added the doctrine, when, and why. For example Easter, Christmas, Sunday as Sabbath, or deciding the book of Enoch is not scripture.

I found the net is like a huge library, except it accepts all without discrimination. By carefully checking the source of their information, it is possible to learn from the net. It has, for example, reports on the old church councils where these decisions were made.

In the beggining..
Genesis 1:6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

-There are waters above the firmament.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: [...]

-The One True God is Three Divine Persons united in One, and all Three are Uncreated Creators.

Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

-Food in the eyes of Father is "herbs" and "fruits". Adam only ate herbs and fruits that Father gave to him for food. Adam never tasted flesh, and he lived 930 years.

n the beginning... ? Sounds good to me
We can begin with the first verse in the Bible: In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. (Genesis 1:1 KJB)

1. The first thing to do is examine the Hebrew text and see if the above is a word-for-word translation. Unlike English Hebrew is written from right to left. So here is what we see (in the Leningrad Codex), and the translation is almost word-for-word, but for some strange reason “heaven” is singular rather than plural in the KJB:

בְּרֵאשִׁ֖ית בָּרָ֣א אֱלֹהִ֑ים אֵ֥ת הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וְאֵ֥ת הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Bereshith bara Elohim has-shamayim we-eth ha-erets.

Literally: “In the beginning created God the heavens (plural) and the earth.

It should be noted that all the books of the Torah in Hebrew are titled according to the first word in the book. So the title of Genesis in Hebrew is “Bereshith” or “in the beginning”.
Now several question come to mind:
1. What does “in the beginning” mean?
2. What does “God” mean?
3. What does “created” mean?
4. What does “the heavens and the earth” mean?

I would. I like the 'are you this or that' being the 'NOT' issue. From beginning to end or subject by subject? Please let me know.

I'm willing to give it a try; however, I know from experience these things tend to get off in the weeds or bogged down in minutiae.

Go for it. I'll see where it goes.

You need a leader for this study, one that knows all scripture so thoroughly he never gets stuck on one interpretation, one who know ancient history so well he knows what the people God used to write scripture thought of the words they used, one who knows how the old and new testament relates. His mind should be free of man's interpretations such as Luther, Calvin. Where are you going to find such a leader for your study?

In the beginning... ? Sounds good to me :D
here you mean 💝 ??

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:1-4‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.”
‭‭Genesis‬ ‭1:1-3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

I was hoping my post #7 would get people answering those questions which all relate to an in-depth study of the first verse of the Bible. But the OP has not even returned to respond.

I will start with #1 ....then a question

For me, being home grown in Chicago, In the beginning happened Nov 2, 2016
Bottom of the 9th game 7…. Chi 8 – Cle 7
Cleveland is up ….2 outs, batter hits a bouncing ground ball to 3rd …the throw …He’s OUT

Cubs win the World Series………….. That was a Big inning ........................................and that... was really stupid

But I did have a serious question. I didn't know it ya'll were interested in the Gap or not.
If not.... I will go back to my stupid jokes.

What does “in the beginning” mean?
In the beggining of the Story. Every good Story starts with: "In the beggining..."

It can't be in the beggining of creation/space/time, because creation only begun after God had created it. If it were "in the beggining" of creation, the "heavens and the earth" wouldn't be created again, "in the beggining". Which means the "beggining" must have been before creation, in order for creation to be created "in the beggining". Hence why it is the beggining of the Story, the Story which beggins before creation, and testifies about the creation of heavens and earth.

That is correct. Before creation "the beginning" was in eternity past (and since God has no beginning and no end He was always there). And that is what we see in John 1:1,2: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God.

So what John is telling us is that before time began, and before creation came into existence the Word (Christ) was already there with God the Father, and that the Word Himself was God. Therefore Christ is designated as the Creator in the next verse. But when we turn to Hebrews 1:10 (cf Ps 102:25) it speaks of the beginning of creation: And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

Christ himself seems to be the beginning and the end who himself is eternal. And the crown of all things that exist by and also for his pleasure and perfect will

“for by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: and he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭1:16-18‬ ‭

It seems God has a plan that existed before all things and has been Unfolding in the world since the world began to even exist but the plan was beforehand ordained before the light began to shine , before the galaxies began to spin before he created all things by his word and commandment to the universe

“Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11:3‬ ‭KJV‬‬

before anything there is Christ the eternal creator and carpenter of the creation itself.

it’s really Amazing that he came to dwell
Among us who is beyond all that exists all That was or is are even os to come. I’m sure glad he has an eternal plan and offers us that we may choose to be part of it

sometimes I wonder “ what will be the creator , have In Store for the whole universe ten billion years from
Now….but remember some things are beyond fathom and well have to wait and see

We could study prophecy , by each finding an ot prophecy or psalm pertaining to Christ and the gospel , and discuss how they reconcile and witness of the Lords plan of redemption in Christ.

just a thought , but what did you have in mind please begin one. I’d love to actually just read along and see where it goes

When I came face to face with my lack of knowledge or understanding of "the beginning", in Genesis, I came solidly against the wall of that I had read it over and it resulted in more questions than answers. I decided I needed help, but that help needed to be of God not man. Yet it had to be a man to help me. !!!!

I found a man who promised not to give his own interpretation of scripture, only tell what scripture says. He added that God spoke to the men who wrote down what God said in language as they knew it, but culture changes over time and with that the meaning of words changes. As an example, salt meant something very different 6,000 years ago than it does to us now. Guidance to scripture needs an understanding of that. Also, the in the beginning the foundation of Christ was formed, this person needed to be aware of that.

I found it in Tom Bradford of torahclass.com. I am sure there are other teachers who have these qualifications to lead a study.

it sounds like possibly he invited doubt of the word of God , and what’s written and gave his own interpretation.

when Jesus was confronted with satans temptations he went to what’s written to drive him away.

“And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, and saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: And in their hands they shall bear thee up, Lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. ( bad interpretation from wrong motives )

Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; and saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭4:3-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

what’s written is trustworthy and powerful.

prayer is the way to find the right understanding of the written word of God. We have the author in our hearts and he wants us to understand he’s the only one really qualified to lead anything

We should study the written word prayerfully and consistently asking for and allowing the lord to be our teacher through the spirit given freely to believers of Christ . prayer always works if it’s from the heart and desire to know what God is saying

we’re always going to be students and already have a good a worthy leader waiting for us to let him lead us
