I still find this to be a significant archeological find that screams 'more than a coincidence.'
That new fragments of ancient copies of Dead Sea Scrolls were found in a newly explored cave was very exciting but the real news seems to have been missed. It is the fact that the two fragments that were legible enough to identify are such important messages for us today.
Zechariah 8:16-17 “These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to one another, render true and perfect justice in your gates. And do not contrive evil against one another, and do not love perjury, because all those are things that I hate--- declares the Lord.”
Nahum 1: 5-6 “The mountains quake because of Him. And the hills melt. The earth heaves before Him. The world and all that dwell therein. Who can stand before His wrath? Who can resist His fury? His anger pours out like fire, and rocks are shattered because of Him.”
Meditate on the meaning of this call to a careful commitment to truth from Zechariah 8-16--17. Followed by a fragment from Nahum 1:5-6 warning of the fiery storm of judgment that is coming that will shatter the rocks, melt the earth, and cause people to say, "who can stand before his wrath?"
These two fragments form a complete message. It’s as if the prophets have spoken from the grave. There is so much depth and meaning in the concise words of Zechariah 8:16-17. May we write them on our hearts, may we be constantly aware of these instructions and careful to apply them in every area of our lives, business, courts, laws, schools. And woe to those who refuse and rebel and choose to love lies and love what Zechariah says God hates.
What are the chances that out of 23,145 verses of the Old Testament these would be the two that were found? Two verses that can literally communicate so well without their context.
But do read the context of Zechariah 8:16 because he promised them that disaster would not come upon them if they did these things.
There is a storm coming and who shall be able to stand in that day when the rocks are shattered? Those who are covered by the Blood of Jesus Christ and have decided to "speak the truth to one another, render true and perfect justice in your gates/courts, and who do not contrive evil against one another, and do not love perjury, because all those are things that I hate--declares the Lord"
They shall stand in that Day.
