What can we learn from the Biblical Feast of Passover and how it relates to Jesus?

Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened.

For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us:

therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven,

neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness;

but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭5:7-8‬ ‭

when we realize he’s the fulfillment of the law and prophets and see he’s our Passover this makes sense

“And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

“And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it, for this is my blood of the new testament,

which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭26:26, 28‬ ‭

it’s what communion is all About in the Old Testament Passover was when they would all choose a young lamb to slaughter and shed the blood upon thiers doors and windows because the destroying angel was sent through Egypt To kill all first born sons.

by participating in Passover the death passed over thier children and only
Killed non Israelite children who didn’t partake of Passover

“And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭12:22-24‬ ‭

Passover is a pattern of when Jesus would later shed his blood for mans sins and save mankind from death with his blood, the “lamb of God “ is a reference to Passover the lambs blood is shed and his flesh is eaten and the leftover burnt as sacrifice.

“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1:29‬ ‭KJV‬‬

sin is why death exists if he takes away our sins he’s taking away deaths hold on us. It’s what communion feasts are supposed to be about in Christianity

I think we should looks carefully at the decision to substitute Easter for Passover. It is not celebrated as we are not circumcision in the flesh, but this is not a fleshly celebrate. We are to be circumcised with sincerity and truth, as it says in Corinthians, not with cutting of flesh. In the same way, we are to celebrate the feasts, but to celebrate with food and joy as we thank God for his salvation is not adding fleshly doctrine to Passover. What is adding flesh is to use a name for it not in scripture and to add fertility symbols.

agree blik. have found mentioning the name of other gods more and more troubling over the years. whats all the worse is relating it to christs rising from the dead. the eggs and bunnies are troubling as well. also it seems that all these things are widely known and have been for many years but churches still promote these things

The Lord wasn't looking for people's religion, nor was he looking for people's
piety and/or conduct that night. He was looking for just one thing, and one
thing only: the blood.

That being the case, then had a Jewish family failed to apply the blood in the
proper manner, their first-born son would've been slain. On the other hand;
were an Egyptian family careful to apply the blood in the proper manner, their
son would've been spared because the The Lord is neither biased nor prejudiced.

Along that same line; Jesus' blood will protect anybody and everybody who
applies it in the proper manner because he died for all; no exceptions
regardless of age, race, gender and/or religious preference. But many won't
be protected by his blood, because they will neglect to apply it at all, let
alone properly.

yeah I think it’s just the difference in a view of “ donchritians continue to slaughter lambs every year and participate in an ancient pattern of Passover ?

or donchrirtians believe Jesus fulfilled the law things like Passover , the sin sacrifice , the scapegoat sacrifice, the priestly requirements , mediation and presentation of the word ect

just a matter of if someone is able to let go of the shadows and patterns of Moses and his law and embrace the reality of christs fuflillment of it and giving of the gospel

we should be careful about not believing the gospel

This struck my heart. It's crazy that we would kill as we think about Christ. Ugh . . .

Maybe we should celebrate the Lamb instead of killing it.

yes it would have been a hard way of life so many sacrifices of blood and life to cover thier sins. Killing was part of how they received atonement and shows us how contrary the law is to the gospel

everything Moses saw and was shown was only a pattern illustrating what Christ would later accomplish for mankind . The old was showing a veiled pattern of the new

“For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect.

But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10:1, 3-4‬ ‭KJV‬

the shedding of animal blood was a pattern shown to the preists of what Jesus was going to do one day. From the Passover to the atoning sacrifice to the brazen serpent in a pole to the bread from heaven ,living water from the rock , flesh of the quail ect it’s all a pattern of Jesus and the gospel

I’m truly glad Christians aren’t called to sacrifice an animal when we sin , that would be hideous and what the world is like without Jesus shedding his blood

I am gradually far away from the irritable character. I believe that no matter what kind of grievances I suffer, I will forgive others, just as Jesus forgives others:" They just don't understand what they are doing". God's word will always be my armor, and I will be as complete as him.

Stephen said the same basic thing as he was being murdered. And, so did Paul in 2nd Timothy . . . when all had abandoned him in the Province of Asia. "Forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Unbelievable. THREE of them.

Easter speaks of the Resurrection of Christ. Passover speaks of His death. Two very different things.

When the Bible says that Christ our Passover was sacrificed of us, that means Christ LITERALLY FULFILLED the Feast of Passover. End of story. Any further Passover observance since Nisan 14 AD 30 is an abomination, because it mocks the sacrifice of Christ. The weekly observance of the Lord's Supper is what we find in Scripture. Christians were not observing the Passover.

It is only unbelieving Jews who have rejected the Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice who continue to observe Seder. That is their choice. But Christians believe that there was ONE SACRIFICE FOR SINS FOREVER, which means that God abolished all sacrifices under the Law of Moses when Christ became "SIN" for us.

Amen remember the feast of unleavened bread and it’s connection to Passover in the Old Testament also and see how they are now intertwined with spiritual significance of Christ and the gospel ?

“It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father's wife. Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness;

but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators:”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭5:1, 6-

a man among the church was commiting a terrible sin of fornication openly and the church was accepting of it. Paul was furious at them for this and was equating the situation to the leaven in bread how just allowing a little
Leaven into the bread , would ruin the whole batch because it doesn’t stay isolated it spreads to the whole batch and becomes part of the whole loaf of bread in the end you no longer have unleavened bread but it’s defiled with leaven allowed to spread.

Paul was angry not only at the man who done this thing among the brethren , but also at the church for going along with it embracing it and endorsing it not rebuking this open sin privately first with a witness , and then among the church . Instead they just accepted and acted as if it was fine.

I suspect there was a lot of talk among the Corinthians about how “ grace covers your ongoing sin while you are enjoying its pleasures and not repenting “ who are we to say anything ? We’re all saved by grace there are no rules “

In this kind of a church no one really is going to ever take notice of how we are actually living and speaking and that we’re going to be held to this account. Even the leaders teach there really are no limits or rules that apply to you because of grace. So no ones ever going to have the anger and judgement coming out of Paul when he heard of this terrible thing going on in his beloved jewel at Corinth

Paul sets a lot of guards against this type of thinking in his epistles but we try to remove what doesn’t fit what we’ve been told by a modern preacher about grace

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.

Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.”
‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭5:10-11‬ ‭KJV‬‬

While we’re in this body we’re being judged for what we do and say in this body, we can repent when we do wrong and receive remission of sins now or move on like it’s acceptable when we leave this body we have to do what it says there and answer for all we’ve done good and bad.

“And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:”
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭9:27‬ ‭KJV‬‬

“But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, And every tongue shall confess to God. So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭14:10-12‬ ‭KJV‬‬
We can start now repenting and giving account of our sins and having them forgiven and keeping account daily of how we’re actually living letting ourselves be judged now in life.

ridding ourselves of the old leaven and embracing pursuing and developing and also protecting the new.

“Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; ( old leaven )

and have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:”( new lump of dough )
‭‭Colossians‬ ‭3:9-10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

To make the decision Gods word has all the right thinking , and some of mine isn’t right yet and let his word correct us becomes our place

“So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭10:17‬ ‭

“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1:16-17‬ ‭

It’s revealed as we learn and hear the gospel more and more through our lives as we age and grow we start to understand things we didn’t before always were far from perfect but always like children we grow , learn lessons , suffer consequences , do better and grow up in time.

the new doctrine is unleavened , the old doctrine has some leaven in it and is hidden by a veil

I'm interested in learning more about the Passover and it's full symbolism and Holy Purpose. *Watching*
Jesus said that He was being written about in the Old Testament, and in fact during His passion, death and resurrection during the Jewish Passover, Jesus fulfilled Scriptures from the Old Testament. It's easy to see how Jesus' entry into Jerusalem fulfilled the Old Testament teaching of the Passover.

First, we need to understand a little bit about the Jewish Passover Commemoration, the most important celebration of the Jewish faith. The Jewish people were slaves for 400 years in Egypt. In order to free Israel from this slavery, God sent His Angel of Death to kill the first born sons of all Egyptian families. But to protect themselves, the Israelites were told to splatter lamb’s blood above their doors, and the Angel of Death would pass over, and not harm their families. They would be saved by the blood of the lamb.

God commanded that the Israelites observe a Passover Celebration yearly, as a remembrance that God freed them from slavery of the Egyptians. During this Passover celebration each Jewish family was to choose a lamb, one that was perfect and without blemish. Not a bone in it’s body was to be broken, but after 4 days this lamb was to be slaughtered and offered to God as a sacrificial offering.

Jesus came to fulfill the Old Covenant Passover in Jerusalem. His entry into Jerusalem would parallel the Jewish Passover and take it to a higher level of God’s Plan of Salvation.

Understand that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the city and it’s temple were the very center of all Jewish religious worship. And when Jesus entered the city it was the time of the Jewish Passover Celebration and the crowds in the city were huge.
As He approached the city, a great multitude came out to Him. The crowd went wild and chose Him as the promised Messiah of God, the One for whom they had waited thousands of years. And Jesus was the Lamb of God, perfect and without the blemish of any sin.

Jesus entered Jerusalem and four days later, Jesus, the Lamb of God was crucified and sacrificed for the delivery of man from the death of their sins. And at the very time that Jesus was being crucified, the slaughter of the Passover lambs had begun in Jerusalem.

And to hasten Jesus’ death, it was ordered to break the bones in His legs. But, instead a spear was thrust into His side and it was clear that He was already dead. And so not a bone in His body was broken.

Man would be freed from the slavery of sin and saved by the Blood of the True Lamb of God. The perfect sacrificial offering to God, for the atonement of our sins.

Thank you. I like the way that you put these Scritpures together.

Since Abraham was prior to the first Passover, have you ever found there to be a link in the Circumcision of Abraham (Gen 17) and the Passover later introduced in Exodus? To me, the physical circumcision of Abraham, the Passover, and the Spiritual Circumcision of Christ (as clearly outlined in Colossians 2:9-15), are all directly related and point to one another. What do you think?

Good points, but as it is we are not celebrating Christ with Passover at all.
Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. We were not
given Passover as a remembrance, but the Lord's supper.

The Lord Jesus, on the night He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks,
He broke it and said,
“This is My body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
In the same way, after supper He took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant
in My blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

*
For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.

There is also a link between the Covenant with Abraham (when he nearly sacrificed Isaac).

My thoughts about Abraham and circumcision would be more of a correlation with baptism than of the Passover.
Both are rites that God demanded to bring His followers into closer union with Him.

That being said, there are very close correlations with the story of Abraham and his son Isaac, and with God and His Son Jesus.

An excellent example of Jesus being foreshadowed in the Old Testament was with the story of Abraham and the sacrifice of his son Isaac.

Isaac was Abraham's only son and God asked Abraham to sacrifice Isaac as a burnt offering. Abraham obeyed and took Isaac to the place of the sacrifice. Isaac gathered the wood and carried the wood on his back. Isaac asked where was the sacrificial lamb and Abraham said that God would provide the sacrificial lamb. Abraham was at the point of sacrificing his only son, when God sent an angel to stop him.

Abraham was willing to sacrifice his only son.

Moving forward to the fulfillment of this Old Testament story to the New Testament, Jesus, God's only Son, carried the wood/cross on His back. God did provide the sacrificial lamb, as Abraham said He would. And that was Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God.

God the Father so loved the world that He was willing to sacrifice His only Son, for the salvation of mankind.

I've posted this before, that Jesus is foreshadowed and written about numerous times in the Old Testament.

The New Testament identifies many types and shadows of Christ in the Old Testament
  • Matthew 12:40 compares Jesus with Jonah: “For just as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”

  • John 3:14 compares Jesus with the Bronze Serpent: “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up.” The bronze serpent looked forward to Christ redeeming us.

  • John 6:32-33 compares Jesus with the manna: “Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

  • Romans 5:14 compares Jesus with Adam: “Adam is a type of Him who was to come.”

  • First Corinthians 5:7 compares Jesus with the Passover Lamb: “For indeed Christ, our Passover, was sacrificed for us.”

  • First Corinthians 10:4 compares Jesus with the rock that accompanied Israel in the wilderness: “[Israel] drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.”

  • Hebrews 10:20 compares Jesus’ body with the veil in the temple that when “torn” on the cross revealed the access believers have to the Father: “[We have] a new and living way [to God] which [Jesus] consecrated for us, through the veil, [which] is, His flesh.”

  • Hebrews 11:17-19 compares Isaac with Jesus. When Abraham sacrificed his son, it was a picture of God sacrificing His Son: “Abraham…offered up Isaac…He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead.”
