I enjoy country, classical, jazz, and classic rock. My music tastes are quite diverse, and what I listen to depends on my mood.

Good morning, JF :) I have posted quite a few of my fave modern praise and worhip vids here:

christian music recommendation - Christian Chat Rooms & Forums <= link :D

I do still enjoy hearing other genres at different times, especially some of those
which have a strong reminiscent dose of nostalgic flavor, and sometimes something
totally new and surprisingly good, though most of the time I am in silence :)

What kind of music do y’all like?
Pick a style, any style. My collection is all christian, but it's everything from bluegrass banjos to heavy metal to black choir to jamaican.

I can find a song in my collection to fit any style you want. I can also find a song in my collection to get on your nerves, no matter which style you don't like. Almost everybody is allergic to one style of music or another.

Music which actually glorifies God.

You know, music where you can't just substitute Jesus' name with the name of any Tom, Dick, or Harry and it still works.

Personally, I have a very hard time finding any of the same.

I attended a friend's baptism at a church not too long ago, and I literally felt as if I was at a rock concert.

I didn't sense the presence of God's Spirit anywhere in any of that.

The people loved it though.

Pumping their fists in the air.

Dancing in the aisles.

Wiggling their fannies.

Had Jesus actually walked in, they probably wouldn't have even noticed him.

Anyhow, before becoming a Christian, my musical tastes were all over the board.

I'll still listen to an occasional secular song, but only if the theme is somehow related to love...as in the type of love that God actually approves of.

Everyone's got opinions
'Bout what's right or wrong
Some say I’m a sinner
Tell me I don’t belong

But, don't bother me with misconjecture
I can't explain what you can't see
So make your peace and choose your measure
Pray you never see the real bad in me
'Cause I'm no saint, I'm no angel
But, I'm the bane of the enemy
The life I lead is the life I bleed
Between the lord and me

Some say I’m a rebel
'Cause I refuse to reconcile
Give an inch to the Devil
He always takes a mile

So, don't bother me with misconjecture...

I've found about 70% of Christian music is junk. In every style. Yes, even in your favorite style.

But the 30% that actually has a message to deliver is worth searching for.

Obviously, I've only heard a small percentage of what's out there in the entire world.

That said, I'd have to honestly say that 90 something percent of what I've heard is junk.

Even then, out of the small percentage which remains, some of it is strictly instrumental.

Anyhow, I've always liked this one:

As far as instrumental music goes, there are also some good songs on David Arkenstone's "Christmas Spirit" album which can be found here:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=david+arkenstone+christmas+spirit

I'm definitely NOT a fan of "Christ Mass/Christmas", but some of the songs are scriptural ("Angels We Have Heard On High", "What Child Is This?", "Joy To The World", "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"), nonetheless.

Others?

Well, their lyrics contain some error ("We Three Kings", "The First Noel", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen"), but I just change them in my head as I'm listening or as I'm singing.

Yes, Grizzly Bears can sing...(not well, though...lol).

Well this seems to be a good thread for the topic, so... What's your style? I'm pretty good at music recommendations. (The hard part is getting me to shut up...)

Start with genre, then get into specifics of what kind of music you like.

Given what you have said so far, I'm guessing this is the exact OPPOSITE of what you want...

In all seriousness, it's totally NOT about what I like.

Instead, it's totally about what I believe brings glory and honor to God/Christ.

For example, I look to how the angels and the 24 elders worship before the throne of God in the book of Revelation, and then compare it today's "worship music", and there's almost never any sort of correlation at all.

Or I look to the Psalms, which I've read many, many times, and I compare them to today's "praise and worship", and there's sometimes a seeming match (at least in words, but not always in music).

Or I imagine what type of hymn Jesus and the disciples sang after the Last Supper, and I compare that to today's "Christian music", and I'm thinking "Ummm...no!"

Anyhow, that might not be much of a help, but what I'm basically saying is that the word of God is my standard for actual praise and worship.

Here's something interesting...

Do you know when the word "worship" first appears in the Bible?

It first appears here:

Genesis chapter 22

[1] And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am.
[2] And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
[3] And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.
[4] Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off.
[5] And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you,
[6] And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together.

You know the rest of the story.

Abraham and Isaac weren't headed up to Mount Moriah to sing a slow song, yet they went there to "worship".

My point?

There's A LOT more to "worship" than just some music and lyrics.

Anyhow, I like this song because it matches the type of worship before the throne of God in heaven as is depicted in the book of Revelation:

I made it about 10 seconds in...and I wanted to tie a millstone around my neck and jump into the deepest part of the nearest ocean.

Seriously, that type of stuff is TORTURE to my spirit.

I like the new songs that I hear about the Lord
I think they're really something grand
I like the music that they're playing while they sing
We've come up with mighty fancy bands

But I also like the old songs that my momma used to sing
She didn't have a band at all
But when she sang the old songs with the Spirit that she had
You could almost see the devil climb the wall
