Music interest

In all seriousness, it's totally NOT about what I like.

Instead, it's totally about what I believe brings glory and honor to God/Christ.

For example, I look to how the angels and the 24 elders worship before the throne of God in the book of Revelation, and then compare it today's "worship music", and there's almost never any sort of correlation at all.

Or I look to the Psalms, which I've read many, many times, and I compare them to today's "praise and worship", and there's sometimes a seeming match (at least in words, but not always in music).

Or I imagine what type of hymn Jesus and the disciples sang after the Last Supper, and I compare that to today's "Christian music", and I'm thinking "Ummm...no!"

Anyhow, that might not be much of a help, but what I'm basically saying is that the word of God is my standard for actual praise and worship.

I didn't even last that long

Can you expand the field to songs that teach a good lesson or tell a good story?

Songs that tell a story or are funny, I guess Ive always liked them and it doesnt matter so much what style they are

I also am a bit dispointed that nobody seems to sing gospel music in churches round my way. I thought a church would be where you would hear gospel music, but I was wrong. I dont think it made it here.
instead its more like anthem rock music blasting out of churches.

The church music I do like though is Scripture in Song which is sort of folksy, and genuine, though now its become overproduced IMHO. CCM took over I guess. I had to scrounge in a second hand Christian bookshop for TAPES of scripture in song, they gave me free, because the Christian bookshops now dont sell it, they only sell hillsong and I just never got into it.

I dont know if you'll ever find someone who likes the exact same type of music you do, but I suppose it can be an indicator of what you are willing to put up with.

My dad listens only to music prior to 1964, will go on and on about it to anyone in earshot, but we offspring wont know what hes talking about because...we werent born then. And to mum. that music is just background noise. I think my dad likes getting angry at djs who dont play exactly the type of music that he likes. Well they are not YOU dad. You can play your own music you know and listen on your headphones. Plus nobody forcing you to listen to the radio. I think recorded music can be quite a personal thing sometimes and also something that can drive you nuts if you let it. My dad is a collector, when was young half his vinyl record collection was in my bedroom, and occupies three rooms and the garage now.

its a bit funny now it can all be accessed online though, but its not so much the music hes obssessed with but the dates and order of pressing of the records and what position they got on the charts. I really dont care about any of that.

That depends upon what you mean by "a good story".

Seriously, I'm somewhat of a lost saved cause when it comes to music.

I really don't like to listen to anything that doesn't truly bring me into God's presence or that doesn't align itself with rightly-divided scripture.

I've spent the last 33+ years renewing my mind to God's word, and I simply don't want anything competing against it inside of my head (soul) or spirit.

I hardly ever even listen to "Christian music" anymore.

I mean, I have several songs memorized, and I'll sing them in my head or out loud (depending on where I am) pretty frequently, but I don't spend a lot of time listening to the actual songs anymore.

Some of the songs do tell "a good story", but they're stories that are taken out of the Bible or stories which provoke me to Christian service.

Speaking of "the old songs"...

This is a true story, and one of the most unusual things that has ever happened to me (and my life is like a "Twilight Zone" marathon...lol), and something which I fully believe was ordained of God.

I've mentioned before that I got married on the beach in Florida, and I lived there for about 9 months after that. We only lived about 45 minutes away from Pensacola, Florida, and "The Brownsville Revival" was going on at that time. Personally, I had no desire whatsoever to go there, but my friend and his new bride basically begged me, my wife (ex-), and her female friend who was visiting us at the time to go with them, so we reluctantly went.

I've always been notoriously early, and we got there at least 30 minutes before the service began. Right after we grabbed our seats, I did something that I'd never done before in my life, nor have I ever done again since (in hindsight, I fully believe that God prompted me to do it). I went up to the altar, and I grabbed an old hymnal that was laying on it, and I began reading it. In all honesty, I had the most intense fellowship with God ever as I read lyric after lyric which actually aligned itself with scripture. I fully believe that God visited me in a special way there in preparation for what was to happen next.

Well, the service began with "Praise and worship", and I've never been so grieved in my entire life. NOTHING in their "praise and worship" had the touch of God upon it, and that was only amplified to me because of what I had just experienced while reading the hymnal. It was so grievous to me that I literally became gripped with an intense fear of God. In other words, I honestly felt as if they were worshipping "another Jesus", and if I stayed there and sat through it...well, then I felt as if I would have provoked God to holy anger.

Without saying anything to anybody, I got up (they probably thought that I was going to the bathroom), and I exited the church, and went out into the parking lot to pray. After I had been praying for only a couple of minutes or so, I heard women's voices calling out my name. I looked to my side, and my wife (ex-) and her female friend were both in the parking lot as well. Although they didn't have the same encounter involving the reading of the hymnal that I did (nor had I mentioned it to either one of them), they both left the service because they were totally grieved by the alleged "praise and worship" as well.

Anyhow, when you mentioned "the old songs", you reminded me of this.

We did eventually go back inside (our two friends were still inside), but I left again after hearing the guest speaker preach for about 1 minute.

Again, it was TOTALLY OFF.

You seem to be stuck on that because you keep mentioning it. I'm not sure why you are stuck on it, but I probably don't want to know.

What kind of music do y’all like?

My husband was born and raised in the Appalachian mountains and when he sings (traditionally) it sends chills... there's something so beautiful and haunting in it - this is kind of what he sounds like, and the style he and his sisters sing:



So I like bluegrass style with a leaning towards acapella. I also like some Christian rock (though I don't find it appropriate in church) and orchestra too, especially the thematic style that is up tempo:



I mean, who doesn't love stuff like that? Lol ..
