Creating A Family Bible Study

I'm a 29 year old and I live with my mom and dad still. We barely spend any time together because my mom and dad work most days. I stay at home all the time just waiting for them to get home. So I decided on my journey to becoming a greater Christian that when my mom and dad are at home from work at the same time together that we should start a family Bible study that we do once a week.

So any ideas on topics to choose for us? How do I choose topics? How do you create a Bible study for your 3 member family?

Bible project has a lot of good videos that can be watched and then discussed. Right now media has a lot of good studies but I believe it requires a membership fee.

There are book studies, word studies, and topic studies. All have advantages.

You might try a book study and couple verses that seem to go together and then list questions that would normally seem to arise. This can give rise to some interesting discussion. For example;

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

Is Jesus the creator?
How is life light?
How is Jesus "the Word"?
How is Jesus equal to God?
What is needed for darkness to comprehend light?

Have you bounced it off your mom and dad? What are their thoughts?

That is an excellent idea, but keep it simple. Just go to the Gospel of John, and study it line by line from the beginning to the end. If you have a King James Bible with marginal references, that should help in connecting other passages to what you are reading. The main thing is to be actually in the Bible (the Word of God), not in any commentary or study guide. John chapter 1 itself could occupy a lot of time. Faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Rom 10:17).

Whatever advice you take from here I pray that your family Bible study group goes well and you get closer to your parents at the same time all getting closer to Christ.

I suggest that you invite two or three friends over for a weekly Bible Study. Choose a leader, and a topic (stay away from controversial subjects) for the first few weeks. Keep your study sessions short ( an hour or less), and stay on topic. Invite your parents to join your group, and leave the rest to God. End each study session with a period of prayer.

Don't be disappointed if your parents don't join your group immediately. Keep you group focused on one subject at a time, pray that they will join the group, and let the Holy Spirit work.

My family eats dinner together 5 nights a week. We simply read from the Bible and have 1 person put in their own words what we read. Then we simply ask the question: why did God want us to know from the passage?
I have 8 children ranging in age from 13 to 27. I'm amazed very often how much they understand.
However you decide to pursue this endeavor try to pray together also. In addition to learning how to pray better, you will grow more intimate with your parents and God alike.

Personally, I think it’s better to have an open discussion type Bible study rather than a sermon style Bible study. Leave room to allow people to ask questions, give answers, say what’s on their heart and mind. I prefer things aren’t too rigid, personally, and I think that’s more comfortable a home setting.

Some good topics are just going through each one of the parables of Jesus and just seeing what happens.
