The concept of “blasphemy against the Spirit” is mentioned in Mark 3:22–30 and Matthew 12:22–32

Matthew 12:31-32

King James Version

31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

.

Jesus has just performed a miracle. A demon-possessed man was brought to Jesus, and the Lord cast the demon out, healing the man of blindness and muteness. The eyewitnesses to this exorcism began to wonder if Jesus was indeed the Messiah they had been waiting for. A group of Pharisees, hearing the talk of the Messiah, quickly quashed any budding faith in the crowd: “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this fellow drives out demons,” they said (Matthew 12:24).

Hi siddhikoli

Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is attributing the work He does to a demon or the devil. Jesus makes this clear in what he says to the scribes. They said Jesus was full of satan and that the demons Jesus cast out of people, were cast out by the power of the devil.

As you can see, Jesus states whoever says such things will not be forgiven. v. 30 states why Jesus said this. It is plain Jesus said that because the scribes attributed the casting out of demons to the devil.

People may come along and tell you the unforgiveable sin is not accepting Jesus, but the text below and the other you mentioned, indicate that is not the case. The Bible is not indicating salvation in what Jesus said.

22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were saying, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “by the prince of demons he casts out the demons.” 23 And he called them to him and said to them in parables, “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26 And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but is coming to an end. 27 But no one can enter a strong man’s house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man. Then indeed he may plunder his house.

28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, and whatever blasphemies they utter, 29 but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin”— 30 for they were saying, “He has an unclean spirit.”

Jesus never directly said the Pharisees blasphemed the Holy Spirit in that passage. I’m not saying you’re wrong, but maybe we should take what you said with a grain of salt.

It can also be said that they didn’t actually speak any words directly against the Holy Spirit, but rather they spoke words against Beelzebul. The Pharisees, as wicked as they were, wouldn’t openly blaspheme God. They were entering dangerous territory with their comments, but I think what Jesus said was a warning.

I hope you keep running. You have already run right past what Jesus said. BTW, you are ignored because of your totally contradictory personal interpretations of scripture. that means, I will not see or respond to your nutty posts anymore. :giggle::coffee:

What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit?

Hebrews 6:5 Context

2Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. 3And this will we do, if God permit. 4For it is impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, 5And have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come, 6If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. 7For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God: 8But that which beareth thorns and briers is rejected, and is nigh unto cursing; whose end is to be burned.

Everything I just said to you is true. This is a Bible discussion forum. Maybe you should be open to discussions and making this a wholesome place.

Falsely accusing people of contradicting the Bible by enhancing the discussion with truthful statements, blocking them, and (for good measure) calling them nutty is unChristian. Your fruitless responses to me will not be missed.

However, if speaking the truth makes me nutty then call me Mr. Peanut.

(excerpt)

Examples of Blasphemy
  • Idolatry: Idolatry is an action of blasphemy because it wrongly attributes worship and faith to an entity that is not truly God. When we find comfort in things other than God, we are guilty of blasphemy. We have failed to rightly praise God with our faith and reverence.
  • Arrogance: Apostle Paul states in Galatians 6:3 that when someone “thinks that they are something when they are actually nothing, they deceive themselves.” Such is the case when we live as though we do not need God in our lives, and blaspheme the sovereignty of God.
  • False Teachings: False teaching and/or false depictions of God are also blasphemous because they obscure the true nature of God. Whereas with idolatry, we tend to worship and hope in a false reality, with false teachings or false depictions about God, we are attempting to change the character of God to more closely conform to our preferences.

28 “Truly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the children of man, ”
Its interesting that people who do not understand Salvation, also never understand the unpardonable sin, or blasphemy of or against the Holy Spirit.
So, im not going to explain it to you, but i will show you this, Polar.

Notice your verse...>"all sins will be forgiven the children of man""......... ..and that indicates, what it coming.......which is the reference to Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit
Notice also, this is "against" the Holy Spirit, vs, Blasphemy OF the Holy Spirit.

Now....Look at your verse....as its talking about the children of men...
Why does that explain that this verse is not talking to a Christian?
Its because a Christian is a SON OF GOD., and the people who are committing that SIN that Jesus is referring to are not a Son of God.

Moral of Story?

We are to learn that not all verses in a bible, and in a NT are AIMED and DIRECTED at the Born again, as many are not.
Such as your verse.
See, there are NO BORN AGAIN CHRISTIANS in your verse.

I'm a bit confused by your comment. Are you putting forward the Two Gospel ideology?

The context of who is talking to whom is key here.

If Jesus is talking to or about Pharisees do you then apply it to already saved believers?

Also.. how is speaking against Jesus forgiven but not the Holy Spirit?

Unless blaspheming the Holy Spirit is rejecting salvation as the Pharisees were doing by rejecting Jesus as the Messiah.

sure.

Jesus forgave those who crucified Him for not understanding He was God, But the blasphemy alluded to here is not done out of ignorance.

Interesting response to this question on this site (link here):

"Again, the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit cannot be repeated today, although some people try. jesus christ is not on earth—he is seated at the right hand of god. No one can personally witness jesus performing a miracle and then attribute that power to Satan instead of the spirit."

that is an interesting viewpoint. Believers today are also seeing miracles happening and that is also being done by the Holy Spirit. so even though Jesus is not on earth, His Followers are and seeing great miraculous things done. so wouldn't saying the true Followers of Christ who are seeing miracles done out of Faith the power of Satan still be Blaspheming the Holy Spirit? since it's the Holy Spirit doing the miracles. and saying it's by Satan is still claiming the Holy Spirit is not God. that seems like Blaspheming to me. and seems to fit Matthew 12.

When the Holy Spirit draws there are 2 choices.

1) Accept & believe.

2) Reject & deny its call.

Jn 12:32 Jesus said, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw "all" men unto me.
(MY NOTE: Jesus was lifted up on a cross & from the grave & will draw "ALL" to Himself. Christ via His Holy Spirit draws ALL. When drawn we have a choice. Except & believe in Jesus' sin atoning death & resurrection & receive eternal life with your creator. Or reject & deny/don't believe. Continued rejection until life's end, results in eternal separation from our creator)

It's curious that with the strong language Jesus uses, there's often laxity around discernment in churches
i see it as a call to discernment, not to give yourself over easily just because everyone else is going along with the flow, or to go along with the flow if it checks out, then you're operating at a higher level. a parallel Jesus teaching is serving two masters
another reason for strong language is Jesus suffered to gift the Holy Spirit, not that i'm suggesting there's tons of 'spirits' everywhere but stick faithfully to the true Spirit is key to avoid confusion and the strong language of Jesus is actually a wonderful teaching compressing everything into just a few words

Sure can. The Holy Spirit is right here with us right now.
