dreamcatcher question!!

hi! so i was wondering, as a christian, if im allowed to have a dreamcatcher in my room. i have somewhat of a native american heritage and would like to honor it by placing a cultural treasure above my bed. i’m not super superstitious or anything, i would just think of it as sort of a good luck charm from my native american ancestors that protect me from heaven.

I do respect cultural heritages of every culture, I think having a dream catcher as a memento is fine but not above your bed, you would then agree with the traditional shamans who consulted spirits, in my opinion this would not be acceptable.

I have seen a real one that was framed and it looked very nice. it is my suggestion for the dreamcatcher. would serve as a cultural memory and artwork at the same time.

A dreamcatcher as an element of Native American art and ancestry is a beautiful thing and lovely to have in one's home (even above your bed), but the saints in heaven protect no one, according to the Christian faith (Protestant), it is the Triune God who saves and protects and guides us through our walk through this life.

As far as the implications of keeping a Dream Catcher goes, check out this very short article about that (the conclusions of which I am personally in agreement with). In short, if you see the dream catcher as simply a piece of your history and/or as a piece of art, IOW, if you attach no spiritual significance to it whatsoever, then I don't see a problem with it.


Unfortunately, you do seem to be assigning quite a bit of spiritual significance to it (that of a "good luck charm" that you believe creates a spiritual connection of some kind between you and your ancestors), and this goes FAR beyond where a Chrisian is supposed to go (according to the Bible). As @Hazelelponi has already said, we are to depend on/put our trust in/worship God alone, never in the beings that He has created (nor in any of the objects that we have made for that matter).

Anything short of that is idolatry.

The is another, important "rub" to consider in all of this, but for now, you need to learn and understand what God has to say about all of this. Have you talked to your pastor about your Dream Catcher and (especially) about your beliefs concerning it? If not, I would recommend doing so as soon as possible.

thanks!! i just see anything owned by anyone in my family or from my family’s culture as something that makes me not necessarily spiritually closer, but something that makes me feel closer to that specific aspect of them. it’s like a family portrait that helps to help understand how your ancestors were! and tysm for the advice!!

For mine, I won't have anything such as a statue or a symbol that has any kind of spiritual or superstitious implication in my home. I used to belong to a denomination that is steeped in figurines of various biblical characters, even hanging them off our rear vision mirrors in our cars implying they had some protective powers. There's no power in them, except an inanimate power to deceive people. I don’t believe Jesus and His apostles would have had anything like them in the homes they inhabited. Sorry to insult your ancestry, but they’d be put in file 13 in my home.

You can draw some comparison between this topic and Paul’s instruction about the eating of meat that has been offered to idols. I won’t give any kind of credibility to any superstition of any kind, be that intentional or unintentional. Shalom.

For those reasons I'd say you are fully within your rights to keep a dream catcher.

Just don't have a tiny one hanging from your cars rear view mirror. You're suppose to be paying attention to the road! 😉😆

First of all welcome. You are among friends and kindred hearts. Feel free to jump in and get your feet wet.
Secondly, being part Cherokee, I know a little about dreamcatchers. I do find them aesthetically pleasing to the eye and goes well with a western or rustic decor. Having native American in yourself, you are aware that their purpose is to draw and trap negative energy. If you are a Christian and devout follower of our Christ, you will find no need for that. Personally, I would not have one in my home.

I would suggest you pray fervently about it, and be willing to accept the answer you receive. The Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth.
