Going into marriage, keep both eyes wide open. Once in, keep them half shut.

When I was still working at the VA Hospitals, a Veteran once told me something that his Mom had told him.

She said, "Love is blind, but marriage is an eye-opener".

In relation to Franklin's quote, I disagree.

Go in with both eyes open, and keep both eyes open while you're there.

Franklin meant once you're married, you have to ignore many things. No one is perfect.

Just because you're both Christians does not make you a match. I have known couples who got married just because they were both Christians. You have to look a the whole person. Personalities and interests matter. I was teaching a sign language class at church and met a couple who had a newborn. Talking to them, both of them said getting married was the worse mistake they ever made. I asked them why they got married. They said, they taught a Sunday school class, their friends said they look good together, so they thought that's all it took. They never dated. They were not the only couple I met that did this. Go out together, one on one and learn about each other. I had one pastor who said, ask your parents and friends what they think of the person you're dating. They will see things you don't.

Wayne Campbell had a marriage quote, which is not quite as good as Ben Franklin's, but it's profound in it's own right.

What? Dont you need to sleep?!

I heard this one

Marriage is like a deck of cards. In the beginning all you need is two hearts and a diamond.
By the end you wish you had a club and a spade.
