Damoclean Sword

Damocles was a courtier to Dionysius (4th century BC). He was asked to sit at Dionysius' table with a naked sword hung from the ceiling by a single horse hair, pointed down. Since the sword would be right above Damocles' head, if it fell he would be killed. Very precarious!

The longevity of your life is held with the possibility of abrupt loss. There are many possibilities for that to be so: accidents of all sorts, illnesses, violence to name a few. But the fact is that you will die, sooner or later.

What can you do to prepare for the after life when you die if you are not a Christian? For a non-christian you can ask the one that said I am the way the truth and the life, Jesus, to adopt you (be born again). You can have faith that you have become His children based on believing His death on the cross, and his substitute for the punishment you deserve due to our falling short of what God's just laws demand has set you free. You have the power to do that: John 1:12-13 says “But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power (authority) to become children of God; who you are born ….. of God. Why does this happen? Because God wanted to make a way for you to be forgiven because of his great love and mercy for you.

The one time mere confession of "accepting Christ" from the non-Christian and the Christian is far from enough! It only puts you in the same category as Satan who believes! If you are a Christian what should your attitude be about doing the right thing? Are you saved? 1John 3:9 says “No one born of God commits sin; for God’s nature abides in him, and he cannot sin because he is born of God.” Many translations say "continue" in sin, a habit of sinning. Matthew 7:21 says: “Not everyone who says to me ‘Lord, Lord’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Christianity is about doing God’s will. Rev 20:13: "... and they were judged every man according to their works."

What Jesus do you believe in? The one who gave himself to redeem us from all iniquity? The one who gave us a new nature, who enabled us to do what’s right? Shall you continue in sin that grace may abound? (Rom 6:1). What you do is directly related to what you believe.
You have the power to walk the way he walked.

Does obeying God's just commandments mean that it has to be a hard, white knuckled, teeth clenching event as a Christian? No! You can love Him and really want to do what is right, because you seek to please God with all of your heart, all of your mind and all of your soul. Many have felt the return love of God which cannot be replaced by anything on this Earth. Out of the abundance of love for God you will want to worship Him because he first loved you by His sacrifice. When you know Him even more you will see who He really is, His power, beauty, His gentleness, His tenderness, (and a long list of other superlatives) plus his continued forgiveness for the rare times you fall. Then you will want to worship Him even more!

When you become His child (born again) you will have everlasting company with the One you love and loves you. His rewards are for those that love and serve Him on this earth. There is no Damocles sword hanging over the true servants of Christ. Their life is in His hand. Nothing can harm them, not life, not death.

I like the piece. I feel that the last sentence could be different though. "The sword hanging over the servants of Christ is held by more than just a single hair [...] Their life is in Christ's hands" perhaps? Or something about resurrection and not having to fear the consequences of our precarious mortality.

The concept of the Damoclean Sword reminds me of the concept that every drinking glass is broken, it's just that in some glasses you can't see the break yet. At some point every glass will break, just as every man is appointed to die once. The concept is that through the impermanence of the earthly human condition (the unseen crack in the glass) shows us the need for delicate handling and care. To approach life with lovingkindness. Because if life was not fragile and the human condition was not impermanent, there would be no need for careful handling, and less or no opportunity for lovingkindness. By God making us mortal, He gives the opportunity to express His love for us.

Amen! Great post!
God gives us his Sprit to live a life that we could not otherwise live. We don't get absolute perfection instantly, but we do get a thirst and desire for it, and He enables us to move in the right direction.

The sad part is that my natural brothers and sisters and close friend either ignored this writing or said not to bother them again. But i will! I will petition the One on their behalf.
