OT is still effective today. It teaches about sin and convicts us of sin.

NT then tells us how to be saved from our sin by coming to Jesus.

The New Testament began with the death of Jesus.

In relation to testaments, we read:

Hebrews chapter 9

[15] And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.
[16] For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
[17] For a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth.
[18] Whereupon neither the first testament was dedicated without blood.
[19] For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and of goats, with water, and scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book, and all the people,
[20] Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.

As we just read, "where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator, for a testament is of force after men are dead: otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator lives".

Under the Old Testament, an animal needed to be slain in order to make that testament of force.

Under the New Testament, Christ, to whom all of the animal sacrifices pointed, needed to be slain in order to make that testament of force.

I take it you’re talking about the Old Covenant, not exactly the collection of books properly known as the Old Testament. Is that right?

If I understand your question correctly, the Old Covenant has been replaced with something better.

Hebrews 8:6
6But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.

Hebrews 10:8-10
8First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

It might have been clearer If I had of asked when JESUS was alive and talking to the apostles was the old covenant still In effect or had the new covenant started before he gave up the ghost on the cross?

I believe the new testament didn’t start until after the death of CHRIST and not before.🫶🏾

And you are correct.

Again, a testament is only of force after the testator dies (Heb. 9:16-17).

Luke chapter 22

[14] And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.
[15] And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:
[16] For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.
[17] And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:
[18] For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.
[19] And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.
[20] Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

I would say the apostles preached what JESUS taught them, the New while they were under law.
It's rightly been said that "The new (testament) is in the old (testament) concealed, and the old (testament) is in the new (testament) revealed".

Parentheses mine.

Jesus operated in the original economy established between the Father and Son from the foundation of the world. By believing, men were also given the right to operate, in a limited way, within the same economy, before the death of Jesus. Yet, because the object of desire, in the original covenant, was man and man reconciled to God, the New Testament (only “new“ in time and space) did not fully vest until Jesus’ death on the cross. By His death, and by The Father’s word (God cannot lie) Jesus arose as The Christ and was given plenary authority, as a life-giving Spirit, to grant eternal life to all who would believe in Him. This life secured men within the eternal plan of God, as His children.

“Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

The Old Covenant (the Law of Moses) was definitely in effective throughout the ministry of Christ on earth. It ended on the day Christ was crucified and the veil in the temple was torn in two supernaturally. Mathew would have written his Gospel after Pentecost, when the New Covenant actually went into effect through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

Matthew was written after the gospel happened it is Matthew account of the gospel , mark also wrote an account of the gospel (peters account ) Luke Paul’s companion o ministry also wrote an account of the gospel and John we have four accounts l wrotten from eye witness accounts all of the epistles and gospels were written afterwards as a record for the church of what to believe

you already have a biblical division

“The law and the prophets were until John:

since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.”
‭‭Luke‬ ‭16:16‬ ‭

“The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God;”
‭‭Mark‬ ‭1:1‬ ‭KJV‬‬
