I have many times read and heard preached, the story of Christ washing the disciple’s feet in the upper room. The message has always been about humility, how Jesus is humble and we are to be likewise, humble in our service. It remains a beautiful message and one of my favorites.

But it was not until today I learned the full message of those passages.

On the mountain, YHWH had instructed Moses to wash Aaron and his sons prior to their consecration as God’s earthly priests. Priests whose purpose was to care for God’s earthly home. Jesus was washing the disciples’ feet prior to their consecration as spiritual priests. Priests whose purpose is to take care of the needs of God’s earthly people, just as we are consecrated in our spiritual baptism into Christ. It's about so much more than just humility.

For most of you this old news. Until I began seriously studying the First Testament, I had no clue.

1 Peter 2:4-5
(4) As you come to him, the living stone, rejected by people but chosen by God and precious to him, (5) you yourselves, as living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be cohanim (Priests) set apart for God to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to him through Yeshua the Messiah. (CJB)
