You gotta go to the Bible and see how it defines what the gift of tongues is. That is it.

Go to Acts 2... go to Corinthians.. seek it out. Also go to concordance and read the context.

That's all. Don't rely on opinion. Only Gods Word.
Ok thanks 🙏

Verse 8 says they spoke in languages from every nation around.

This is one instance among many where the Holy Spirit came upon people. Other times there were not speaking of tongues. Look at Cornelius or even Jesus's baptism.

Paul says otherwise: Have you received the Holy Ghost SINCE you believed?
Yes, I have and remember it very vividly. But no Paul said no such thing in context that you must speak in tongues to be saved. Hard to do that, if it isn't willed and gifted by the Spirit.

Thank you very much
But also does mean I haven’t been baptized by the Holy Ghost
But the Bible says speaking in tongues is an evidence or sign of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Act 2 verse 4
Everyone who is saved is baptized by the spirit or they are not a true christian

Not everyone will speak in tongues

only the word of God can answer these questions
  • Who is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit? Answer John chapter 1:32-34
32 And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. 33 I did not know Him, but He who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
Jesus is who John testified to be the Son of God and was told by the Holy Spirit that Jesus is the one who baptizes in the Holy Spirit and Fire.

  • Who do we ask to be empowered with the Holy Spirit? Answer John 1:33 WE ask the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • What is the empowering of the Holy Spirit for? Answer Acts chapter 1: 8 JESUS SPEAKING THE ONLY AUTHORITY ON THE TOPIC.
Acts 1:8 8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

The empowering of the Holy Spirit, Jesus said we to be a witness.

  • Why speak in tongues? Answer in Acts chapter 2:2- 4

When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The empowering of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 was evidence of the promises Jesus said was coming and they were told to wait for the Power of the Holy Spirit in Luke Chapter 24:49

49 Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high.”

  • What is the gift used for? the answer is in 1corthians chapter 12 through 14
  • What does it mean when you do speak in tongues? the answer is in 1corthians chapter 12 through 14

Rather than beat around the bush, I think Elo, the opinion of some is that you may not be saved. So you may want to testify to that truth and then the opinions of you not being saved are laid to rest.

I am scared that I haven’t because I can’t speak in tongues
Yes I have been baptized by water
Great. You are born again and have received the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Now, backing up on the right track, before "seeking tongues," we have the
predecessor of "water baptism," which Most are still Confused about, and
until this is Solved, How can we understand the "tongues issue"? Of course
this would lead us even "further back" to the predecessor of that, which is
"Salvation."

So, according to God's Rule #1 in Bible study Rules:

"Do all things Decently And In Order" (1Co 14:40), we have a Different list
of questions to be answered, instead of:
Until you know:

  • Why speak in tongues?
  • What is the gift used for?
  • What does it mean when you do speak in tongues?
  • Who is the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit?
  • Who do we ask to be empowered with the Holy Spirit?
  • What is the empowering of the Holy Spirit for?
Which would be: Until you know:
  • God's Requirements For ETERNAL Salvation?
  • The Merits of Christ's BLOOD On The Cross?
  • What Is The Spirit's OPERATION In God's Salvation?
  • The WHY of water baptism - does it save us, or not?
  • Do we "have the PEACE of God" knowing we "HAVE Eternal Life"
  • Instead of fear of?:
  • OR: Is it simply a "temporary" life based on behavior?

  • THEN these Important questions:

  • What Is God's ONE Command, Today, Under GRACE, That God Says:
  • "Fulfills ALL the law In ONE WORD?
  • What is the "Fruit Of The Spirit" all about?
End of the beginning of Much study, before this "tongues issue" becomes
so Overwhelming, that the "faith of some" runs into shipwreck, "choking
babes In Christ with Meat," instead of nourishing "Milk of The Word,"
Correct?

GRACE, Peace, And JOY...

ELO has already made a profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; therefore, the answering of her question

"Why can’t I speak in tongues as a Christian?"

It is known that she, as stated, is saved. In a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

We are all condemned to begin with.
We have put our trust in good works like baptism, keeping the law, treating others with respect, avoiding crime, and even miracles. You should forget about the spiritual gift of languages for right now.

You put your trust in good works? Then you are not saved yourself.

There is only ONE way to be saved and that is through the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus...through his sinless blood...we are born again through the Sprit of God and all the spiritual gifts are still in effect and anyone has the privilege of enquiring about them and that includes speaking in tongues

No one has to forget about any spiritual gift but they should forget about your bad advice which is not based on scripture!

Why did Paul say to earnestly desire spiritual gifts if we should just forget about them? The people who say forget about them are the people who have not pursued them in righteousness and with the desire that God would give them His gifts by His Spirit.

Earnestly pursue love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.

I Corinthians 15:1 Prophesy here does not mean to foretell the future.

So go ahead and teach the opposite of what scripture states and you will answer for doing so...but none of you believe that.

Why can’t i speak in tongues as a Christian
Scripture reveals that God gave the gift of the Holy Ghost to people in different sequence. I don't know whether you are familiar with the specific scriptures. If not, maybe they will provide some insight.

According to Jesus, some can receive the Holy Ghost through praying to God. (Luke 11:13) This is likely how the Samaritans received the Holy Ghost at the hands of Peter and John in Acts 8:17.

It's recorded that some heard and believed in the death, burial and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues, and got water baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus afterward. (Acts 10:43-48)

Some believed the gospel message and got water baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus but did not receive the Holy Ghost until days later. One can conclude that Philip knew the group had not received the Holy Ghost because they did not speak in tongues as was customary. The scripture indicates there was evidence when the group received the Holy Ghost after Peter and John laid hands upon them. Although the record does not specifically state they spoke in tongues, it is certainly implied. (Acts 8:12-18)

Some believed the gospel, got water baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus, and afterward received the Holy Ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues upon the laying on of hands by Paul. This occurred on the same day. (Acts 19:1-7) In this case, Paul advised the group of the need to believe in Jesus' death, burial and resurrection, and re-baptized them in the name of the Lord Jesus.

the confusion is with regards to those who believe that Christ's sacrifice and perfect salvation is aided by their submersion in water.

the Bible does not teach this and so they confuse people by saying that it does say that

This is not baptism in the spirit

This is the ANOINTING of the spirit

Baptism of the spirit is God baptizing us into Christ

the anointing of the spirit is the spirit being poured out on us (see also the OT. where the priests were annointed with oil as the oil was poured on them. The oil represented the HS.
