One would be hard pressed to find a thread on this forum that doesn't go off on a tangent that is longer than one page. I posted a thread on the word of knowledge, and someone posted off on a tangent within a few posts... something that seemed totally unrelated.

If moderators wanted to keep posts narrowly on topic, I'm okay with that, but that doesn't seem to be the culture of the forum, so I don't worry too much about it.
yes. must be nice to be a serial contributor to that sort of thing.

considering this Thread is about Speaking in Tongues but the last 5 pages have been about Prophecy and Prophesying i would say i'm on target as much as everyone else.
Guess who has about 3 things they like to discuss and that is one of them

I hesitate to mention the other 2 lest we suffer under those themes for the next month or so

My first post was on page 3 in response to naysayers about the spiritual gifts and of course we shall always have the anti-tongues coalition with us

you? not page 3 and not about the actual topic

I posted quite a bit regarding the gift of tongues and the uses and what Paul has to say about it

you started with your prophecy propaganda some time back and people objected to what you were saying, myself included and you know what came after that

you are most definitely the leading expert on rabbit trails

I respond to posts like everyone else. I am not planning on rereading to see tge flow of the conversation. But your post I am quoting isn't that on topic either.

The way conversations go here is does not make sense to be a conversation Nazi.

Precious @Elo

God loves you! Gifts are according to purpose - has absolutely NOTHING to do with God loving any child more than another. YOU ARE LOVED!!!

The Holy Spirit manifest a gift as needed for the edifying of the Believer or Body of Christ.

Some Believers will be alone and need to edify themselves - mostly leaders because they are neglected yet need to meet the needs of others…. King David often had to encourage himself in the Lord.

Surrender EVERYTHING and God will give you His EVERYTHING!

Be filled with the Holy Spirit in the Mighty Name of Jesus Christ according to the Father’s Will, receive the Promised Gift of the Holy Spirit, amen.(y)

Sometimes, we need patience, long suffering, endurance, and humility. These character traits are like gold.
Speaking in another language will happen if God needs to use you. Don't stress if you don't, the most important thing is being close to Jesus.

Mat 6:31 Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Your hairs are numbered and our Heavenly Father knows every need. Trust in Him.

Since the gift of speaking in tongues infers your ability to communicate using the spoken word, language acquisition is acquired during a critical period of development, during which time if the child does not learn to speak they will permanently lost that ability, meaning they can't later learn how to speak.

That is the reason it is a gift, had not the LORD walked and talked with man in the first days then man would not have been able to develop the ability speak since since human speech is not acquired from hearing the word spoken, nor does it evolve since you have to have someone speaking to you to learn how to speak. have you told the LORD thank the gift he gave up your ability speak.

Check out Genie the feral child who was kept the attic of her parents house until 14 years old. Having been isolated during that criticial period of development the poor child never was able to speak even after years of being taught after rescued at age 14.

It isn't Gods will that we all speak in tongues.
Some will twist the scripture to say it is Gods will but the bible tells us that not everyone gets the same gift. It also tells us that Prophesying is better.
1Co 14:1 Follow after charity, and desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy.

Most think of prophets as people that tell the future, but they can also be people that speak God's word.
Strong's Definition: From G4396;
to foretell events,
divine,
speak under inspiration,
exercise the prophetic office: - prophesy.

A prophet can be ... someone filled with the Spirit of God, who by God's authority and command in words of weight pleads the cause of God and urges salvation.
They discerned and did what is best for the Christian cause, foretelling certain future events. (Act 11:27)
in the religious assemblies of the Christians, they were moved by the Holy Spirit to speak, having power to instruct, comfort, encourage, rebuke, convict, and stimulate, their hearers.

I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written...

well this is one of my continuing disagreements with how some are taught that prophecy in the NT, means you can add to scripture, tell the future and you are on the top of the heap of gifts

Please note I am not taking sides here. I was already in agreement with CS1, who, is in agreement with scripture and that is what I refer to and agree with

In particular, I am only referring to your statement that prophecy in both testaments is the same.

The New Testament gift of prophecy is different from Old Testament prophecy. Paul says the church is “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets” (Ephesians 2 v 20). The equivalent of Old Testament prophecy is the apostolic testimony recorded in the New Testament. Old Testament prophets and New Testament apostles brought God’s authoritative word to his people. In contrast, New Testament prophecy is to be weighed and tested (1 Thessalonians 5 v 19-22).

At its heart, prophecy seems to be bringing God’s word to bear in a particular situation. So it’s intimately tied to God’s word in the Bible, but also involves applying that word to specific situations. Paul says we should “eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy” because “the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort” (1 Corinthians 14 v 1, 3). Sometimes that means predicting the future (as with Agabus in Acts 11 v 27-30). But more generally, prophecy brings the truth to bear on people’s hearts so they can be strengthened, encouraged and comforted. source

I have already pointed out that Paul states tongues are equal to the gift of prophecy IF they are interpreted, so that should be remembered by folks who believe if you are a prophet, then you have some kind of authority no one else has, because yes, that is sadly often how that gift is misused today...I do not see you saying this, but it is in wide use today

It should be noted that the gifts are given for the edification of the body...the building up of the body of Christ and tongues are also for the edification of the individual, as per scripture, again from Paul

A prophet in the OT was sent by God to speak for God, to people who were NOT filled with the Holy Spirit as per the outpouring in Acts and available to all believers today (not that all believers wish to partake for various 'reasons') and the spiritual gift of prophecy today is to strengthen, encourage and comfort as per the highlighted text above.

Are we really going to dither about what the gift is actually for when the Bible explicitly tells us what it is for? How could tongues, IF interpreted, be compared to prophecy if prophecy was only for the foretelling of some event? Those 2 gifts would not then be comparable or equal under certain circumstances at all!

Having said that, a future event can sometimes be told as per the related event when Agabus foretold of a famine that was going to happen. It happened. Note that this was not correction or God warning about impending punishment but of the same nature as the dreams that came to Joseph....not condemnation or judgement as per OT prophets. Also note that is not the description of the function of a prophet as per the description from scripture.

HOWEVER, the main thing I would like to point out is simply the fact that prophets in the OT were the exception and were not sent to comfort but rather to warn, to correct and speak for God to people who preferred not to listen.

Believers today have all the words of the prophets, prophecies yet to come to pass and do not need a go between to speak to them on behalf of God. Moses was not the appointed go between the Israelites and God. God desired to speak directly to the Israelites but they did not want that; they wanted Moses to speak to them so God granted them their desire BUT it was not His best for them.

This is getting long but this is actually a MAJOR MAJOR point for understanding AND protection against deception.

Why can’t i speak in tongues as a Christian
The idea that some churches push, that one needs to speak in tongues or one has not received the Holy Spirit, is unbiblical and dangerous. I speak from experience and several years at such a church. I always knew this belief was wrong - "that one hadn't received the Holy Spirit until one spoke in tongues". But still I kept asking God for the gift.

Finally, I got to analysing the church's actions. I strongly doubted their "interpretations of tongues" - some interpretations were borderline heretical, but more often, almost verbatim quotes from the Old Testament rather than any interpretation. Some "tongues" were very short, with interpretations very long. Interpretations don't work like that (I found this out later, as I dealt with other languages). My doubt was confirmed when one day, when praying with them to speak in tongues and instructed "Just loosen your tongue", I did so and just started to babble as they appeared to babble. "He's speaking in tongues!" they exclaimed. "He's speaking in tongues."

"No, I corrected them. I am just babbling. I could always do that, but it's not speaking in tongues."

They wouldn't hear it. For them, there was no differentiation between babbling and speaking in tongues. No dual interpreters (separated to give their interpretations), to actually confirm that the one who was interpreting was actually interpreting correctly. It was all a scam. I would guess that 99% of churches who claim some members to speak in tongues are participating in such a scam - perhaps unknowing that it is a scam. Some may even be demonic.

God clearly used speaking in tongues in the bible, and I believe He still can or might use it. But as for those churches which claim it is necessary to demonstrate one has received the Holy Spirit, give them a wide berth - I put these in a cult category. God gives the gifts for His purposes, not for self-glorification or demonstrating His love to those who can't accept His promises from scripture.

The tongue spoken of in Acts 2:1-6 was understood by every one that heard it even though they spoke different languages. Acts 2:6. It needed no interpreter. This same tongue will be spoken by God's elect when they are delivered up before Satan to expose his lies. Luke 12:8-12. It will be the Holy Spirit talking through them. Satan will come first, before Jesus, claiming to be God and the elect will stand against him. II Thess 2:1-4

the Book of Acts doesn't say Those who spoke in Tongues knew what was being said it says those who heard them speaking did.

Why do you see a connect between these verses?

Have you ever stood before Satan?

That is correct. There are several prominent individuals in the New Testament -- particularly Jesus of Nazareth -- who never spoke in tongues. But they were all filled with the Holy Spirit. And modern tongues are not even biblical tongues.
