This is some of the best advice that I feel Christians now-a-days could really use. One of my favorites that can be used so often when talking with new Christians.

Hello @Stephen777, I agree with you about the advice that is given in 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 being GREAT advice for us as we seek to live the Christian life, and very good advice to present to new believers as well (since it speaks to need that all believers have to practice the Lord's "presence" in the moment by moment of our daily walk before Him). I have found that whenever I do not do so (follow the dictates of v16-18, that is), I quickly begin to depend upon myself, instead of upon the Holy Spirit, which I have found never works out very well for me, even in the short run.

That said, I remember reading and seriously considering those verses for the first time (about 36 years ago now, not long after having become a believer) and that all I could think were things like "'pray WITHOUT ceasing', how am I supposed to do that?", and "'rejoice ALWAYS/in EVERYTHING give thanks', wait, what, am I supposed to rejoice in/give Him thanks for all of the bad stuff too?" (I had read, but did not fully understand everything that verses like Romans 8:28 were actually telling us yet)

Perhaps it would be useful to discuss the practical ways that we obey these commands :unsure:

Great topic! Thanks for broaching it :)(y)

God bless you!!

~Deut

1 Thessalonians 5
16 Rejoice always;
17 pray without ceasing;
18 in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

Here's a quote that I believe may be useful to consider, especially in regard to v18's command.

Spurgeon - Kiss, Waves, Rock of Ages.png

We know that God causes all things to work together for
for good to those who love God, to those who
are called according to His purpose.

Romans 8:28

16 Rejoice always;
When others abuse you, slander you, you should be happy.

This is some of the best advice that I feel Christians now-a-days could really use. One of my favorites that can be used so often when talking with new Christians.
amen I think if we don’t limit it to two sentences it has a much more edifying effect sort of allowing what’s being said to sink in

“Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men.

Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

Quench not the Spirit. Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:14-15, 17-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬

if we allow what Paul’s saying to be what he’s saying it’s actually teaching us important things this speaks very different

“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
‭‭1 Thessalonians‬ ‭5:16-18‬ ‭

When you remove this part where oil began the exhortation to Christians

“Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. “

What I mean is all that’s also gods will for us not just to rejoice and pray but to act right as well
