“Cursed legs.” The trail of blood painted his escape over the cobbled road to the ambrosia orchard.

“Work!”

Frosty gales clawed his bare flesh and seared his tendons like icy fire. The air punching through his esophagus burned his exhausted lungs, but he dared not halt. There was no more hiding and the penance of atonement was an ultimate, forever-lasting, eternal damnation. Impending doom consumed his mind. Tendrils of doubt spread and wrapped around his brain, convincing him that if his pace were too slow for even a fraction of a second, death would claim him.

"I won’t make it." His cheek twitched and with a single stroke of his sword, broke the arrowhead piercing his shoulder. “Forgive me Luz’yaná,” he dropped his radiant shield to squelch his lips. What vile thought had seduced him to ever believe he would survive the ordeal? That he could free her from her the hierarchy that kept her chained. That they could elope to the forbidden realm.

“So close, almost...”

He swayed with a limp as he ran. Just barely out of reach. His veins could feel the vibrations of the portal to the next ascension. Would he make it in time, or was he convinced by an aching delusion conceived out of desperation? Crimson footprints pattered in wet thuds drove him into the entrance of the divine garden but it was too late. Her shadow from above enveloped his body. Shining-holy arrows hummed, striking like gongs on impact right behind his footsteps. Movement flashed as her silhouette dove from the canopy of the sky-trees. The gate was a few more paces ahead, if he could just-

Unmistakable strength flung his beaten torso over the marbled steps of the cliff temple. Red saliva burst from his throat as he groaned in anguish. There came a brief moment of hope. Inside the palatial structure pulsed the veil of Cieloica; the portal to heaven’s throne. He stumbled, crawling on his knees. “I won’t let you resign to this fate.” The colossal passage glimmered and rippled akin to a living mirror, allowing the paradise world to reflect on the other side. The warrior dragged himself over the crystalline tiles and his arm reached out to touch the shimmering screen. The pads of his fingers felt the warmth of the everlasting sun of the other dimension, but his grasp was interrupted by another.

“Fool!”

The clutch of ire in her palms scalded his ankles, and she tore him away from the promised land. Luz’yaná was a sentry draped in scarlet armor and her mighty arms towed him to the edge of the sky-mountain and pinned him face down. “Machidiel, thy demise is at hand, have at thee and perish with honor.” In a savage, barbarous instant, the forlorn wrath in her muscles ripped his wings and left bloody nubs writhing on his back. The male arched his stomach and scraped at the grass between his knuckles. She dug in her heel, and the agony became indescribable.

“Your wings shall never again taste the sky nor savor the stars.” The sentinel had deprived him of his very essence and the nature of his being was cut away. She hoisted him up by the neck. Pebbles dislodged over the precipice below his feet. “I cast you out, so let the world of man show you mercy.” Her beautiful irises glazed like coals of blue fire.

“Fall to earth, and may you find redemption.”

Weary lids curtained and opened softly. The face of his judge flushed with the righteous duty of a guardian, but her tears flowed with a solemn sadness. In breaking the holy tenets, he had also broken a binding promise and forced her hand to banish him. She stifled a pained sob and gently released her grip. The outcast jerked into a freefall, and the woman of his adoration collapsed to her knees.

He began to fall.

A horrid sensation churned in his stomach. The high altitude pressure suffocated his lungs and the wind stole the very breath from his lips. Helplessness consumed his every reflex and his limbs flailed uncontrollably. Frozen gales slashed at the throbbing wounds at his spine as he tried to control the directionless death-roll, but there was no stopping the terrifying descent. More than any physical anguish he could endure, the transfiguration into a mortal ached him the most. Even as he plummeted from above, he wondered if the stratosphere would grace him again. If his gaze could ever cradle her features once more.

The celestial sun waned into darkness and light became a cloak of dark velvet. Artificial cityscapes dotted the surface of the planet below by the millions and the constellations closed behind his back. Brisk currents slipped between his fingers, yet his hands still reached upwards beyond the starry night that swallowed him. There was no use fighting it. He was seraphim no more. Golden eyes shut, and the brilliant divine glow bestowed upon him at birth dimmed and faded from his frame.

"Forgive me, father." He uttered a silent prayer.
