neither calvin or luther or spurgeon or henry or augustine or popes or preachers today know that Psalm 119 is Messiah Yahshua's prayer for life

78 Let the proud be disappointed, for they have overthrown Me wrongfully.
I will meditate on Your precepts.
79 Let those who fear You turn to Me.
They will know Your statutes.
80 Let My heart be blameless toward Your decrees,
that I may not be disappointed.

He prays against those who reject Him. He is focused on His Father's precepts. He prays that those who fear the Father will turn to Him the Son for forgiveness of their sins knowing the Father and Son accomplished their salvation resulting in eternal life. He asks to be blameless so He will be raised to life again after giving His life.

this whole stanza is clearly the Son praying, as the whole Psalm is.

KAPF
81 My soul faints for Your salvation.
I hope in Your word.
82 My eyes fail for Your word.
I say, “When will you comfort Me?”
83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke.
I don’t forget Your statutes.
84 How many are the days of Your servant?
When will You execute judgment on those who persecute Me?
85 The proud have dug pits for Me,
contrary to Your Torah.
86 All of Your commandments are faithful.
They persecute Me wrongfully.
Help Me!
87 They had almost wiped Me from the earth,
but I didn’t forsake Your precepts.
88 Preserve My life according to Your loving kindness,
so I will obey the statutes of Your mouth.

He describes His suffering at the hands of those who hate Him. He again asks that His life be preserved because of His obedience through His suffering and death.

92 Unless your Torah had been My delight,
I would have perished in My affliction.
93 I will never forget Your precepts,
for with them, You have revived Me.
94 I am Yours.
Save Me, for I have sought Your precepts.
95 The wicked have waited for Me, to destroy Me.
I will consider Your statutes.
96 I have seen a limit to all perfection,
but Your commands are boundless.

He says be will live because of His obedience to the Torah(law) after He perished. He trusts the promise of life in the law to Him and that His Father will raise Him. He asks to be saved from death because of His obedience. the commands are boundless because the give Him life according to the promise.

97 How I love Your Torah!
It is My meditation all day.
98 Your commandments make Me wiser than My enemies,
for Your commandments are always with Me.
99 I have more understanding than all My teachers,
for Your testimonies are My meditation.
100 I understand more than the aged,
because I have kept Your precepts.
101 I have kept My feet from every evil way,
that I might observe Your word.
102 I have not turned away from Your ordinances,
for You have taught Me.
103 How sweet are Your promises to My taste,
more than honey to My mouth!
104 Through Your precepts, I get understanding;
therefore I hate every false way.

He loves the Torah(law) and states His innocence in keeping it. He trusts the promise of life and know He learns through His obedience.

105 Your word is a lamp to My feet,
and a light for My path.
106 I have sworn, and have confirmed it,
that I will obey Your righteous judgments(mispat).
107 I am afflicted very much.
Revive(haya H2421) Me, YHVH, according to Your word.
108 Accept, I beg you, the willing offerings of My mouth.
YHVH, teach Me Your ordinances.
109 My soul is continually in My hand,
yet I won’t forget Your Torah.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for Me,
yet I haven’t gone astray from Your precepts.
111 I have taken Your testimonies as a heritage forever,
for they are the joy of My heart.
112 I have set My heart to perform Your statutes forever,
even to the end.

This stanza screams it is the Son's prayer for life because of His obedience to the law in giving His life to save us. He took an oath to obey His Father's judgments which is the Hebrew word mispat which include the requirements of the law. He asks for life according to the promise. He will not forget the Torah(law) and what it required of Him. He again declared His innocence and obedience.

most people who have studied Psalm 119 know that each stanza begins with a Hebrew letter from the Hebrew alphabet. each verse of each stanza begins with the letter of that stanza. How telling is it that He praises the word and the Torah(law) as He prays Psalm 119 using the Hebrew letters? He is the Word and the fulfillment of the law and promises through His obedience in giving His life to save us. His Father answered His prayer for life by raising Him from death to life according to the promise of life to Him for His obedience to the law in giving His life to save us.

116 Uphold Me according to Your word, that I may live(haya H2421).
Let Me not be ashamed of My hope.
117 Hold Me up, and I will be safe,
and will have respect for Your statutes continually.

He asks to live again as was promised to Him. He again says He honors His Father's statutes continually.

Psalm 119:67
Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

Jesus never went astray. (to go astray commit sin or error)

In contradistinction.......

Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin.

Psalm 119 is Davids Prayer.

It is abundantly clear.

The Lord Jesus didn't go astray. This is purely your imagination. Its a fanciful thought but it misses the mark.
Some say psalm 119 was written by King David, some say it was written by a unknown writer who lived during the Babylonian exile, and some say Ezra the scribe.

You are correct Grandpa. The Lord Jesus did not go astray and all though there are verses within psalm 119 that fit what Jesus might say, going astray is not something Jesus ever did. When we look at other translations and commentaries on this verse it keeps the same meaning of going astray.

Psalm 119:67
Before I was afflicted I went astray, But now I keep Your word.

Jesus never went astray. (to go astray commit sin or error)

In contradistinction.......

Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things just as we are, yet without sin.

i think Daniel is a good candidate for authorship. just based on a few things the psalmist says.
i'd say it's my humble opinion, but it wouldn't be true. :geek:

so the Person praying Psalm 119 praises the law from beginning to end; declares His innocence and blamelessness over and over; promises to obey the law and even takes an oath to do so; asks to be given life over and over with the law as His basis for doing so. then because of a couple of Hebrew words that are mistranslated to "astray" ends up being a lawbreaker and sinner in the end. yea, that works. wonder if He was raised to life again because of His obedience to the law, like He kept asking for?

Isaiah 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and YHVH hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

That is exactly the situation He finds Himself in the last stanza and verse. He died for our sins. His Father laid on Him our sins. He suffered death for us and was dead when praying this last verse.

from the KJV Psalm 119:176 I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek Thy Servant; for I do not forget Thy commandments.

Some translations use the words wandered off instead of gone astray. the translation lost Sheep is incorrect. the word they translated to lost is abad/avad Hebrew word 6 which means perished or destroyed. the next word se H7716 can be Lamb. He is referring to Himself as a destroyed perished Lamb. the verse would be more accurately translated.

I have wandered off like a destroyed/perished (slain) Lamb.

He was dead when praying this verse but did not blame His Father for putting Him there. He was being obedient to the law which required Him to give His life to save us. He was separated from His Father in death. He is asking to be raised to life again.

He ends the verse and Psalm with

seek Thy Servant; for I do not forget Thy commandments.

He is asking His Father to seek Him while He is dead like the slain Lamb, which He was. He does not forget His Father's commandments that required Him to give His life for us in obedience to the Father. He also does not forget the promise of life in the law to Him that if He did these things He would live. He was again proclaiming His innocence and obedience in giving His life and asking His Father to raise Him according to the promise.

The verse people focus on to say it cannot be the Son praying Psalm 119 is one of the strongest proofs it is the Son's prayer even while He was suffering death to save us. knowing this reveals so much more and opens us the meaning of His words in Psalm 119. it is a cornerstone verse with Him even referring to Himself as the "slain Lamb."

It is also amazing to know that He kept on praying to His Father while dead. as He tells us in Psalm 88

88:18 You have taken away My companions and loved ones.
Darkness is My closest friend.

He was alone in death. the darkness was His companion, but He kept on praying and asking His Father to receive those prayers. In Psalm 119 He was asking for life and to be raised again. that is so awesome to know and such intimate revelation on what He suffered to save us and what He prayed while doing so. His Father received His prayers and answered Him by raising Him to life again as was promised to Him in the law if He was completely obedient in giving His life to save us.

Here is more from Psalm 88 which is clearly one of His prayers while He was dead. look at His questions. Do the dead rise up and praise You? He was about to find out when His Father answered His prayers to live in Psalm 119 because of His obedience to the law in giving His life to save us.

6 You have laid Me in the lowest pit,
in the darkest depths.
7 Your wrath lies heavily on Me.
You have afflicted Me with all Your waves.
Selah.

8 You have taken My friends from Me.
You have made Me an abomination to them.
I am confined, and I can’t escape.
9 My eyes mourn because of the affliction.
I have called on You daily, YHVH.
I have spread out My hands to You.
10 Do You show wonders to the dead?
Do the dead rise up and praise You?

I’d say Jesus prayer for life is probably here when he prayed for himself , his original disciples nd all who would believe through thier words ( the New Testament is written entirely by them his chosen witnesses of the gospel )

the title seems to fit better here where it’s very easy and simple to see and grasp revealed in the gospel as all things are

So some excerpts from Jesus the messiahs prayer for life for himself , the original church and those of us who would believe through the new testament words the words of his disciples and apostles

his prayer of life

These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: as thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee. For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; ( one body of believers ) as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.

And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me.

Father, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world.

O righteous Father, the world hath not known thee: but I have known thee, and these have known that thou hast sent me. And I have declared unto them thy name, and will declare it: that the love wherewith thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them.”
‭‭John‬ ‭17:1-8, 14, 17-18, 20-26‬ ‭

a this truly is his prayer for life and for us all who believer the gospel , and what’s nice is we don’t need secret hidden knowledge just to hear and believe what’s here in the gospel we read Jesus praying and hear what his prayer is and believe

Shortly after that He was praying in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Luke 22:42 Saying, Father, if Thou be willing, remove this cup from Me: nevertheless not My will, but Thine, be done.

He knew what He was facing and that it was the Father's will.

when He was being arrested He said.

Matt 26:53-56 Thinkest thou that I cannot now pray to My Father, and He shall presently give Me more than twelve legions of angels?
But how then shall the Scriptures be fulfilled, that thus it must be?
In that same hour said Yahshua to the multitudes, Are ye come out as against a thief with swords and staves for to take Me? I sat daily with you teaching in the temple, and ye laid no hold on Me.
But all this was done, that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled. Then all the disciples forsook Him, and fled.

He knew that He must die to obey the Torah, law, statutes, precepts, judgments, commandments and testimonies of the Father to fulfill the Scriptures in the Torah and Psalms and prophets. His prayers while He accomplished the Father's will are recorded in Psalms. His Father answered those prayers by raising Him from the dead.

On the road to Emmaus He opened the Scriptures to the disciples He was walking with. later He appeared to the Apostles and said.

Luke 24:44-45 And He said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning Me. Then opened He their understanding, that they might understand the Scriptures,

Knowing Psalm 119 is His prayer is extremely important. The promise of life in the law Leviticus 18:4-5, to the Man Who kept and fulfilled the law was mentioned again in Ezekiel 20:11,13 and 21. Paul mentions it in Roman's 10 and Galatians 3. It is key to understanding Scripture, the law and what He accomplished and how He conquered death. Knowing Psalm 119 is His prayer to be raised to life again because of His obedience to the law in giving His life to save us explains many New Testament passages and things He said in the Gospels.

in addition to that, Jews and Muslims recognize Psalms as Scripture. if they came to understand that Psalm 119 is the Son's prayer as well as other Psalms, there could be a large conversion to faith in Him as Messiah for salvation. many could be saved. Since the world now has 8 billion people there is more opportunity than ever that many could come to saving faith in the Son.
