“The Gospel” occurs 325 times in 91 verses in the King James Bible, and there is an exact match 77 times. The number of occurrences itself is proof that the Gospel is something which God wants everyone to hear and believe. But the Gospel has many facets, therefore it has different designations.
The Gospel is called simply (1) “the Gospel”, or (2) “the Gospel of the Kingdom”, or (3) “the Gospel of Jesus Christ”, or (4) “the Gospel of the Kingdom of God”, or (5) “the Gospel of the grace of God”, or (6) “the Gospel of God”, or (7) “the Gospel of His Son”, or (8) “the Gospel of Christ”, or (9) “the Gospel of peace”, or (10) “the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ”. The most frequent occurrence is “the Gospel of Christ” and this occurs 10 times in the New Testament. Which means that without Christ there is no Gospel and there cannot be a Gospel.
So what exactly does this word “Gospel” mean? It is the English equivalent of the Greek εὐαγγέλιον (euangelion) which means Good Tidings or Glad Tidings or Good News.
This is not man’s good news, but God’s Good News, because it cost God a great deal to present this Good News to mankind. Since all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, all are also guilty before God. And if God had not provided a way for mankind through the Lord Jesus Christ, all of humanity would be consigned to the Lake of Fire (along with the devil and his angels).
But because of the grace of God and the finished work of Christ, the Good News is that all may be saved from Hell if all will repent and believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Indeed God now commands all men everywhere to repent (Acts 17:30). This in itself reveals the fallacy of Calvinism.
Now why has God given His Gospel so many designations? Some people actually believe that there are two or three Gospels because of the various designations. But there is ONLY ONE GOSPEL. So we should try and see the significance of the various designations.
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of the Kingdom” or “the Gospel of the Kingdom of God” it takes us beyond our present realm and takes us all the way to the time when the Lord Jesus Christ will establish His perfect Kingdom on earth, and will reign as King of kings and Lord of lords.
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of the Grace of God” the focus is on the infinite love, mercy, kindness, and grace of God the Father in sending His beloved Son to earth to become the Lamb of God who would take away the sin of the world.
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of God” that is a revelation that the Gospel, and the power of the Gospel, are supernatural and divinely given and ordained. No man could ever come up with such a Gospel. The Bible says that "the Gospel is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes" (Rom 1:16) because the Word of God is "quick (alive) and powerful and sharper than any two-edged sword" (Heb 4:12).
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of His Son” it reminds us that it was the glorious Son of God who humbled Himself as the Suffering Servant of God and was obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of Christ” the focus is on Jesus of Nazareth as the Messiah or Anointed One who came into the world to save sinners. He came firstly to Israel as their Messiah/King but when Israel rejected Him He became the Savior of the world.
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of peace” it tells all sinners (who are all enemies of God), that God was in Christ reconciling the world unto Himself at the cross. Now it is men who need to be reconciled to God by believing of the Lord Jesus Christ and receiving Him as Lord and Savior.
When the Bible speaks of “the Gospel of Jesus Christ” or “the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ” it tells the whole of humanity that Christ not only died for our sins according to the Scriptures, but that He was buried, and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures, so that we might be justified by grace through faith.
