Darkness rejoices wildly with death
About to consume life and light
Aroma of destruction in their breath
Eager to bring terror to the night
As if cruel hyenas on their fresh prey
In anticipation licking their lips
Bloodthirsty howls of excitement convey
Greed of the beastly mouth that drips

The sinister host is now ready to declare
His cold welcome to death's banquet
On the floor of this tomb of despair
Shredded hopes woven into bitter blanket
Dyed in tears of grieving widows
As darkness is beginning to swallow light
Feast is set up in the abode of shadows
Where death itself sits down to drink life

But not discerning the body of Christ
They ate and drank for their judgement
Breaking teeth on the meal they priced
Disarmed and left with no lasting lodgment

The Lion of Judah is alive as his roars sound
The throne of death starts to shake
Rock containing light under its ground
Truly has no choice but to break

Vile hyenas now begin to tremble
As their end approaches from every side
In recesses of their crumbling temple
They truly have no place to hide

Often my poems start from a dark place and end in the light. Personally I like the contrast and think it can help to highlight the glory of God (to whatever extent it may be reflected in my poems). But sometimes I do wonder if the darker tones are a bit "too dark" for some readers' liking. Just imagine if this one ended after the first two paragraphs.

Just in case it wasn't clear, this is an allusion to 1 Corinthians 11:29 but here it's applied to the victory of Christ over death. Death and darkness tried to "eat and drink" him but it was for their judgement destruction and for the victory of Christ and all of his own.

I think you poetry is great. I really like the poems.

I would have preferred a “turn” in the poem to say, and therefore rescued by the lion, they were ever loyal and saved….or the like!

That would have been good, but I think I wanted to keep the scope somewhat narrow and focused this time. Also didn't want to add to its length.

I also slightly dislike my word choice in the very first line: "Darkness rejoices wildly with death". For me, "rejoices" is somehow such a "pure" word that I wouldn't normally want to use it in such a context. I guess I just didn't come up with an alternative that seemed fitting. Perhaps "cheers" whould have worked.

I suspect part of our poems is written with the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the part that isn't quite right sometimes is the part we wrote. I don't understand the interaction between us and the Spirit, can't define how, but nevertheless I think we have help in writing these poems.

1 Peter 1:4
If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
