MAC vs. PC

Which one is the superior in every single way, and is the only computer for you?

Haha. I'm thinking of getting a Mac, THINKING about it...I'm getting so sick of Windows Vista. It always asks me questions - questions I don't know the answer to. It's like I'm on a quiz show. It'll be like "Windows encountered a problem. You have 3 options. All of them are complicated. Choose wisely." Or, "This program is trying to do something. Should i let it?". See the whole reason I bought a computer was so it could make decisions for me, but its so afraid to do anything without my permission, and I never know whether to let it do something.

I hate computers!

Macs, definitely! You get so used to all the typical Microsoft problems like the slow speed/ crashes/ viruses and I think you can really expect more from a computer!

Macs are cool. I'd get one, if I didn't use my computer primarily as a game platform.

I've only had PC's and I've never had any major problems with them. For what I use it for, I like the compatibility between PC's and most programs. Then again Vista isn't backwards compatible with a lot of things, found that out the hard way.

If I could afford two computers, I'd probably have a PC and a Mac.

I used to be a Mac fanatic, and I thought Windows to be the Evil Empire.

But, as I continued in my 3D animation career, I started to appreciate Windows. (XP was probably my favorite iteration to date.) Maya, while perfectly functional in the Mac OS, just seems to be a tad better in Windows.

Then, Apple started revealing its vile wokeness and hypocritical, virtue-signaling double-standards.

I still like the Mac. My whole digital infrastructure (iPhone, mainstay applications) are Mac and switching to another platform does not seem worth it to me. The Mac OS has a personality. Always has. More fun to work in. So, it is my go-to for my domestic purposes (e-mailing, research, entertainment, business transactions, TMB).

But, because they are so woke, and Microsoft is not much better on that front, but, because I use both so heavily, I use both more or less equally in my home, and both are networked to each other.

However, I get around the woke thing, to an extent, by not buying new Apple products from Apple (even though I own Apple stock... ugh). I buy used from third parties. My current Mac laptop, a 13" MacBook Pro, is from 2020 and not through the Apple Refurbished Store. I don't know what else to do. There are two major platforms, and not too many other viable choices. (As a back-up of sorts, I have a dual-boot into a Linux variant, Centos 8.)

On a hobby note, I have a yearning for old Macs that still boot up. "Old", as in pre-2000. This is when my penchant for Macs was at its peak. The OS's interface was so superior to Windows' at the time, and even in their beige bodies, looked better than their PC counterparts. Plus, System 7+ was much better in overall graphics and video production than was the Windows environment.

So, back then I rooted for the Mac, and still love the machines of that day. I currently own two 'old' machines: A 1998 Rev A iMac (which still boots up into OS 9.1), and an ancient IIcx (which only shows a brief green light at start-up). I want to see if that 1989 bad boy can't be revived. And, money-permitting, I may want to see if I can't find a working Quadra, and / or a IIci. I also have a 2010, Westmere-based, 5,1 Mac tower, currently running Windows 10. But, because I now have a much newer workstation, I'm going to convert this back to a Mac and install Snow Leopard onto it. Why? Nostalgia, because it's cool, and because I have an aging camcorder that still works and best functions with the iMovie and FCP of that era.

My experience...

MAC is better for artsy stuff and for ease of use. I think the GPS in iphone is great, iPad is really just a big phone screen, with little extra capabilities, and my MAC computer is for art/music. Far less issues, better support, and more customer friendly. Has better service, but apple products usually cost 50-100% more, and for far less hardware for the buck.

PC/Windows better for most business applications, gaming, and for computer problems. No support really, unless you pay. Even so, tech support is more painful, than actually using Windows. Products are generally cheaper. Many, many software issues, and glitches. Need to be more of a tech nerd to like Windows.

Chromebook is really just a operating system with a web browser, hardly does anything, but surf the web. Very cheap, but bullet proof. Probably the most stable operating system. Might be the operating system of the future, once it has more applications, and market share.

Linux has great security features, stable, free/cheap, and has more applications than Chromebook (maybe), but more of tech nerd operating system.

Android phone operating system is glitchy and I will probably never use it again, as long as iphones keep their product quality intact.

I will tell you that when shopping for an upgraded workstation, Mac and PC both were in the 5G range. I agree that Apple's stuff, in some cases, is more expensive (not sure about double the cost though), but at least when it comes to high-end machines, they're all in the stratosphere and roughly at the same altitude. I was surprised to learn this as I priced Dells and Aliens and others.

I can agree with all of this except the last bit about Android. That depends on which phone you get. I've had some smooth ones (Moto) some really glitchy ones (rather not say) and everything in between (Unihertz, ASUS, OnePlus, etc.)

I would say rather, with Android you have to pay attention to user reviews before you buy a phone. With iPhone, it's an iPhone. Who needs user reviews? With Android you need to get some information on that specific phone model first.

I bought a Dell Inspiron laptop back in 2007 with Vista, at the time I ungraded the ram to 4GB and a faster Western Black (?) hard drive, recently, I took out the old WD HDD and put in a 480GB Crucial BX500 SSD, and what a difference it made, boots up a lot faster, everything works so much quicker...its given it a new lease of life...

Windows Vista... Ah yes. I never used it, but I heard the howls of anguish from the masses who did.

Ever notice that Microsoft seems to alternate between great and terrible?

- Windows 98 brought the internet to the masses and made it easy to use.
- Windows ME crashed so often people started getting proud of their uptime.
- Windows 2000 was solid as a rock.
- Windows XP ws solid AND more useful. (Okay, a hiccup in the chain there. Two good ones in a row.)
- Windows Vista tried to be new, but just tripped over itself everywhere.
- Windows 7 was solid, useful AND smooth as butter.
- Windows 8... We don't talk about Windows 8. It never happened.
- Windows 10 was like 7's big brother.
- Windows 11, well... I think I'll hold off and not upgrade any of my computers just yet. Let's see how it settles out.
