I started a new thread with advice on protecting your automobile. But this thread seems to be a good place to post it also:

Just a word of advice for protecting your automobile, if you are experiencing temps at or below -10 and have no garage/shelter for your car; don't let your car just sit through the cold. Take the effort to go out and start your car up, let it idle for about 10 minutes. Do this every four hours or so.

That's a trick I learned from being stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska for two years. To keep our vehicles operational in the field, we'd idle them every 4 hours.. When temps drop below -10, I saw auto radiatiors burst from frozen antifreeze that expanded. Also, when it gets that cold, your oil can lose it's viscosity, become thick, and your battery won't have the power to turn the engine over to start it.

Whatever you do, don't leave your car outside in these temps for a couple of days. Just some words of advice, take them for what they are worth.

That's not unusual for down here for a few days to a week, But later in the winter. The wind and possibility of 2 feet of snow with the storm is a serious combination. Did you get much wind?
We had a bit of snow last month also, but it normally does not stick around long :)

There was a good foot of snow on my car this morning! But it was mostly fluffy and all brushed off
very easily except for my hood, which I had to scrape, and the front passenger window was already
clear from yesterday's sunshine :D. There is still at least a good foot of snow on my roof :giggle:

The temperature now is -8 C (18 F) with a wind chill of -13 C (9 F). Tomorrow is supposed
to be 0 C accompanied by snow at times heavy mixed with ice pellets :censored: and by Saturday
and Sunday we are to be back to more normal winter weather with 8 C (46 F) :)

Chicago high temp today -2 F almost cool enough to make ice cubes. Too bad the recipe has been misplaced.

Polar vortexes worse than this have hit. It seems Texas is where people get the worst of it. The power companies don't seem to prepare adequately in Texas. At least that is the impression the news gives. Then they really try and soak the people for their own poor planning is what it sounds like.
Yep 12 degrees here this morning,,the lights are still on at my house but the water went off in the middle of the night(we knew to collect some from times past)... To the east of us in Jasper county and then south in Orange county they lost power about 7 o'clock last night. We loose power and water,,internet,,,phone service so often in Texas that about 20 years ago I installed both electric and propane heaters(no telling which you'll have to use at different times)... It doesn't really seem to matter if it's winter or summer because after hurricane Rita there was no power where I live for about 4 weeks. Hurricane Ike was not as bad we got water and electricity back in about 3 weeks. At the same time I made the change to both propane/elec. I installed a 4 foot fan into the wall so we could open the windows and pull air in when there's no power but I can only run the fan, icebox, small freezer and a few lights on my generator. It's becoming just like the Texas politicians say "were energy independent here in Texas",,that is we learned not even to rely on the state for help(there like watching SNL's political skits anyway). Every fall we rake up the leaves and put the piles of mulch over the dog house like an igloo and stuff it with hay and rake the rest around the house to block air from going under it. I figure I have to flip the mulch piles anyway so since they generate heat I flip it against the house and on the dog house when it freezes and back into piles when it don't(no busted pipes so far, lol)

Not really... and hockey season goes into June! That's when the Stanley Cup Playoffs take place ;)

It's -6 C (21 F) here right now, snowing, with a wind chill factor of -11 C (12 F).

My daughter is worried about flooding when the rain starts, forecasted to start tomorrow into all next week.

Illinois at least gets a little back to us for the scamming that goes on. Com-ed gave us a power strip, a desk lamp and two night lights. WOW!!!!!.....Did your area get caught with that rate hike outrage. News said rates were up like multiples of normal. Don't recall what year that was or what area? Maybe DFW area.

Back in the 90's here Pat Quinn got his boost to win Governors seat 2009 by getting the phone company to drop the fee that everyone was charged but hardly anyone had need of. Seems to me that every company is involved in scams. Even the little guys have to do it. Around 1996 a guy I met claimed he was fired as an accountant because he wouldn't cook the books.

I believe it because my ex was an enrolled tax agent and the IRS came after me after we split and I did pay a negotiated fine. My ex was trying to be clever. She always had a little mischief going on. Tried starting a company to compete with ADP payroll services. LOL

This is probably the kind of stuff that pushes some to do the thing like Jan 6 committee is trying to work out. Before that all were one off incidents it seems. The Moore County, NC incident, shooting up the power station was a dandy and where is that going.

Time to break out the galoshes and floaties.
Yes, I have been wearing my boots when I go out :) Today there was about six inches of new snow
on my back window, but it was the first time my windshield wipers were not stuck/frozen in place.
The roads were bad, though, and all the more so since less people are braving them. Two-lane streets
really mostly only had one clear lane for driving in, though I got to work no problem :D Coming home
was a different story! My car was covered with a layer of watery ice which broke up and brushed off easily
enough, but I got stuck three times on my way home. The first time was exiting the parking lot at work, and
then again about twenty feet later exiting the alleyway onto the main street. Some people passing by helped
push me out :D Hurrah for good Samaritans!!! Then I got stuck at the top of a small hill entering the second
part of the parking lot where I live. I pulled the same manoeuvre that got me free from my work parking lot
entrance- of backing up and turning a little, then trying to move forward again. Haha. We west coasters are
not really made for this kind of weather, but I know to drive slowly and also very carefully, and kept to main
roads as much as possible. In fact I drove all the way to work in second gear :D We had a nice luncheon and
then I left shortly afterwards, and am not expected back until the new year when it will be balmy again :giggle:

It goes to show how much I know about hockey.

Maybe we should pray about the chance of flooding here too. I'll do that.

Reminds me of a joke...a man wanted to go ice fishing so he gathered all the supplies and on the appointed day put up his tent and began drilling a hole to fish through. A short time later he heard a voice telling him that there are no fish there. The man proceeded to move his tent over 20 yards and again began drilling. The voice came again: there are no fish there either.
Confused the man ask: are you God?
No replied the voice. I'm the owner of the hockey rink.

Wow that's good actually if you get power strips, nightlights and such all we got was a 2023 calendar,,and no if I lived about 10 miles farther north their all on Entergy,, (SHECO) gives us power though so it didn't go up. It's sure been revealing to watch things play out the last several years though we applied for food stamps back in August(I am in my 80's and was disabled so we thought we would qualify?) but ever since they have disqualified us for not faxing them stuff(we got the Email on a Friday afternoon and it had to be in by Monday but they were closed),,,then we refiled and called every 10 days like they told us but they said they lost our application(every 10 days since August so about 15 phone calls over five months, lol). The only thing we can find out is they say they are short handed and that hundreds of thousands of Texans if not more are flooding them with applications. We did try asking for help at Church but they don't use their money to help the needy so we quit the Church we were going to and were either going to become First Baptist or Assembly of God because those were the only two in Tyler county we could find who would help(rather go there than to where they don't help people). here's the articles from Texas about the staffing problems and such... https://www.wfaa.com/article/money/...klog/287-3c710ccf-0f30-4b06-94ba-9b7f671a18be

Hey Iamsoandso, post the name and address of the AG local to you and maybe some help can be arranged by way of my local AG here. if you post it here by monday I might find out something next week. Can't say definite but may be worth trying?

With our power company it is likely that some politician is trying to get brownie points. And then the execs got caught with fingers in the cookie jar, almost sure. News is fairly accurate that some Texas power companies put the squeeze on customers. Looking out for the little guy: CEO's nephews and other in laws and out laws>>>lol

I do appreciate your offer but this Church did help us and many others so I have been helped by them and am fine at the moment. https://www.fcw.church/# The other Church that helped a few months ago is a Baptist Church but it's small and I cant find a www for it but they are very Christian/helpful also so I should mention them too. The Church in the link I gave FWC I have watched for years now(early 1980's?) and they plant gardens and give it to the needy, if someones car breaks down they have several members who will help fix it for you. They mow peoples lawns who cant or will help with anything or everything people ask them about.

Current temperature: 5 C (42 F), and raining. The melt has begun. Wind: ENE 24 (15) gust 35 km/h (22 mph).

It was zero last night (32 F). I have reopened my second window :D

I would not pray for flooding...
