Isaiah 9:8-21

Amplified Bible

God’s Anger with Israel’s Arrogance
8
The Lord sends a word (message) against Jacob,
And it falls on Israel [the ten northern tribes, the kingdom of Ephraim].
9
And all the people know it,
That is, [a]Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria [its capital],
Who say in pride and arrogance of heart:
10
“The bricks have fallen down,
But we will rebuild [all the better] with ashlar (hewed stones);
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with [expensive] cedars.”
11

Therefore the Lord raises against Ephraim adversaries from Rezin [king of Aram]
And spurs their enemies on,
12
The Arameans on the east and the Philistines on the west;
And they devour Israel with gaping jaws.
In spite of all this, God’s anger does not turn away
But His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].
13
Yet the people do not turn back [in repentance] to Him who struck them,
Nor do they seek the Lord of hosts [as their most essential need].
14
Therefore the Lord cuts off head and tail [the highest and the lowest] from Israel,
Both [the high] palm branch and [the low] bulrush in one day.
15
The elderly and honorable man, he is the head;
And the prophet who teaches lies, he is the tail.
16
For those who lead this people are causing them to go astray;
And those who are led [astray] by them are swallowed up.
17
Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men,
Nor does He have compassion on their fatherless or their widows;
For every one of them is godless and an evildoer,
And every mouth is speaking foolishness.
In spite of all this, God’s anger does not turn away
But His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].
18
For wickedness burns like a fire;
It consumes briars and thorns,
It even sets the forest thickets ablaze;
And it swirls upward in a column of smoke.
19
By the wrath of the Lord of hosts the land is burned up,
And the people are like fuel for the fire;
No man spares his brother.
20
They slice off [in discord] what is on the right hand but are still hungry,
And they eat what is on the left hand but they are not satisfied;
Each eats the flesh of his own arm.
21
[The tribe of] Manasseh devours [the tribe of his brother] Ephraim, and Ephraim Manasseh,
And together they are against Judah (the southern kingdom, the house of David).
In spite of all this, God’s anger does not turn away
But His hand is still stretched out [in judgment].

this Video that has ties to Isaiah 9:8-21 --it is an hour long but it is just quite fascinating as it ties this scripture in with what is happening in America ----Verse 10 is the main focus ------
10
“The bricks have fallen down,
But we will rebuild [all the better] with ashlar (hewed stones);
The sycamores have been cut down,
But we will replace them with [expensive] cedars.”

I say ----
-it is about God's signs and judgment when nations turn from him and go their own way and think when their bricks fall and their Trees are up rooted they can rebuild with greater strength and plant stronger trees ----without turning back to Him -----they don't need God in their lives or nations ----they have thrown God aside -----
you just have to listen to what has happened to ancient Israel and what has and is happening in America ------verse 10 is mentioned after 9 11 by the Senate majority leader -----as it shows the arrogance we display and How God says without Me you will be destroyed ------

Harbingers or coincidence?
September 12, 2017 Stokes News Community, Opinion 0
By Leslie Bray Brewer - Special to The Stokes News

https://www.thestokesnews.com/opinion/11346/harbingers-or-coincidence

In 2015, I read the best-selling book “The Harbinger” by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, which puts forth the premise that many things which happened on 9/11 symbolize and predict (as harbingers do) that another terrorist attack could be forthcoming. Many fascinating correlations between ancient Israel and modern America were brought up, with regard to terrorism.

One connection was that after the terrorist attack, U.S. government leaders used a Scripture—Isaiah 9:10—to encourage and inspire Americans. At first glance, this Scripture seems to bring hope: “They said, ‘We will replace the broken bricks of our ruins with finished stone, and replant the felled sycamore trees with cedars.’” U.S. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle quoted the verse on September 12, 2001, as he presented a joint resolution expressing the consensus of the Senate and the House of Representatives to condemn the terrorist attack. He called it a passage from the Bible that “speaks to all of us at times like this.”

What neither of them realized was that this Scripture was not designed to bring hope…..but rather, judgment on the arrogant and defiant nation of Israel.

There is nothing wrong with rebuilding with stronger material. The problem was that Israel’s statement reeked of defiance when God had clearly told them the attack had come because of their refusal to humble themselves to walk in His Godly old paths.

On July 4, 2004, a 20,000-ton chiseled stone—hewn out of the Adirondack Mountains in New York—was placed as a cornerstone for the rebuilding at Ground Zero.

NY Governor Pataki said, “Today, we, the heirs of that revolutionary spirit of defiance, lay this cornerstone.” That word “defiance” surely sticks out to me

Have you seen that Freedom Stone lately? No, neither have I. It was removed two years after it was placed and went to rest in some stone-yard.

What did Israel say next in Isaiah 9:10? That they would replace the fallen sycamore trees with cedars—again, taking the attitude that they would rebuild stronger after the terrorist attack. Sycamores were common trees of little value for building that grew in the lowlands, producing coarse wood.

In the Septuagint—the very old Greek translation of the Scriptures—Israel is quoted in Isaiah 9:10 as saying, “The bricks are fallen down…but come…let us build for ourselves a tower”—with the implication that they would build bigger and stronger than ever. What did America decide to build in the wake of 9/11? A tower. U.S. leaders proclaimed repeatedly that they wanted to make the Freedom Tower the tallest building in the world, but settled for making it simply the tallest in the Western Hemisphere.

The ruins, the chiseled stone, the tower, the sycamore, the cedar…..Did the people who orchestrated these amazing parallels do it on purpose—to align with exactly what happened in Isaiah 9:10? No. It “just happened.”

Or did it?

Truth is indeed stranger than fiction. The end of this story is that when Israel ignored the Almighty’s warnings in Isaiah 9 of coming judgment if they didn’t repent of their defiant, arrogant ungodliness, the Assyrians attacked yet again and this time decimated the country.

Cahn’s premise is that these parallels between what happened to Israel with the Assyrians and what happened to America on 9/11 could be harbingers of yet another attack on the U.S. if we take the route of defiance as opposed to repentance. Is he right?

Time will tell.

America is not in any covenant with God and never has been. What is written to Israel does not apply to America. Certainly God will judge the nations including America. As Jesus said, nations will rise against nation, and there will be famines and pestilence, etc... However as Jesus also said, these are the beginnings of birth pains. He also said for us to not be disturbed by these things.
Did you bother to watch the video i posted?

I've known of this guy's books. They're stupid and they play upon the myth of the U.S. being a Christian nation.

Nowhere, in the Constitution or in the law of the United States, can I find a covenant relationship between the nation of the United States and God. A nation cannot abandon what they've never obtained and God cannot abandon what He's never possessed.

In fact, U.S. law makes it quite clear that the people are the sovereign over the nation. This is nowhere near the model of the kingdom of God.

If anyone should be thinking about the prophecies of Isaiah, and taking heed to them. It should be the church. The prophecies stand as a stark warning to us about accepting false doctrine and false prophets and hedonistic and paganistic lives and practices.

He's definitely right in that defiance and rebellion and self-reliance will always lead to destruction. But we aren't a covenant nation. And while God still deals with nations as a whole, even in OT times God dealt with individuals as well. Lot suffered while Abraham did not. It's still possible to live a quiet prosperous life--a life with God hid in Christ--free of the judgments of the ungodly.

America's 'Explicit Covenant with God': How a Nation Pledged to God Can Save a World or Lose It
07-01-2022

WASHINGTON – Covenants are viewed as the most sacred and binding of deals – an oath that's never to be broken. America's earliest settlers made a covenant with God to serve and proclaim Him throughout the earth. These days, however, Americans appear to have forgotten this covenant and that can have dire consequences.

America Began in Covenant

Early English settlers also wanted their new land to share such a binding covenant with God.
Christian historian Eddie Hyatt, the author of The Great Prayer Awakening of 1857-58, said those who came to Jamestown starting in 1607 put it in their Virginia Compact.
