Just A viewpoint At Why Did Jesus Say “The Spirit of the Lord Is Upon Me?

Of all the profound truths written by the prophets in the Old Testament, why did Jesus choose this verse for this time? Isaiah’s writings were particularly popular, and eventually would be quoted more times in the New Testament than all other prophets combined. But Jesus had a purpose. A mission about to begin.

Let’s take a few steps back to the prior days in Jesus’ life and see what events led to this extraordinary Sabbath day. Luke chapter 3 records Jesus’ baptism by John in the Jordan River, when something remarkable happened. “The Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove” (Luke 3:22). The Holy Spirit came upon Jesus in a visible way.

What a miracle! Imagine being in the crowd of seekers that day waiting to be baptized and witnessing the Holy Spirit empower the son of God on this earth. It’s barely fathomable, but we know it happened. Jesus also knew what awaited him in the coming days and months, and he would need the Spirit to lead him. He would soon face things too difficult for human strength.

Leaving the Jordan, Jesus “was led by the Spirit into the wilderness, where for forty days he was tempted by the devil” (Luke 4:1-2). Hungry and exhausted, the devil threw everything he had at Jesus. Yet the Holy Spirit led Jesus there, stayed with him, and also guided him out. Luke assured us through his account, Jesus continued to walk in the Spirit. “Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside” (Luke 4:14).

The Holy Spirit’s power to withstand the enemy’s worst attack gives us hope. Many times I feel overwhelmed with all life throws my way. And I just don’t have the strength to go another step. So I’m grateful for Jesus’ example he so willingly lived out for us. The same Spirit helping Jesus in the wilderness lives in me today. I have reason to not give up!

“...the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you” (John 14:17).

Notice it’s after the holy spirit comes down from heaven he begins to say things like this

“For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.”

“It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.”

The holy spirit preached the gospel of Christ

There are seven spirits of God: Lordship, wisdom, understanding, council, might, knowledge, and the fear of the Lord.

This is Isaiah 11

There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
The Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD.

See also Revelation 1:3, 3:1, 3:5, 5:6.

These can be understood to be God's characteristics or how He expresses Himself. It should not be understood that God is seven separate spirits. He is one Spirit, the Holy Spirit.

Revelation 5 records:

"And I looked, and behold, in the midst of the throne and of the four living creatures, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth."

A horn is a symbol of rule and authority, eyes are a symbol of judgement (revealing what is true). Together they represent righteous judgement.

Jesus said; "I can of Myself do nothing. As I hear, I judge; and My judgment is righteous, because I do not seek My own will but the will of the Father who sent Me." The Spirit sees and judges according to the nature and character of God. Jesus judged according to what He received from the Spirit. In this same manner, we are called to judge.

"Do not judge according to appearance, but judge with righteous judgment.” Jesus said this.

Jesus' proclamation "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me" was the fulfillment of prophesy. The Jews who knew the OT would have understood that.

I shared this with my son last night. He was as blessed as I was.

Christ is the example. It is amazing how many tell us to obey the words in red (sorry no caps) yet leave out luke 11:13. So what happened when the spirit came on Christ did anything in His life change? He told the 12 you shall receive power after the holy spirit comes on you. We know they were saved since at the start told them not to rejoice demons have to obey you but that your names "are" written in heaven He breathed on them and I believe they were not filled right then. Why? What did Christ tell them He "would" send? He had to be gone? So He prayed asked the Father for what promise? Yeah so they 12/120 already saved since Christ died rose yet oddly didn't have the holy spirit. Tasted of it for sure but were told to wait and they obeyed and were all filled then people thought they were drunk by the way they acted. You know how some make fun of those "Christians" in some Churches. So me? I don't care what any man says.. if GOD told me to ask Him and He will give me something.. HELLO! Let ever man be a liar.. I am going to ask and He will give it just because I asked.. just like in Acts where "have you received the holy Spirit since you believe. Many say I got Him when I was saved. Not written that way but praise God

Like today we went out to eat and over time there was this waiter that we got to know. He told us today his going to Chicago April 1st. Not sure if hes saved I know hes gay but all we did was show him love told him we will be praying for you so you know someone here is always thinking about you. He was adopted no parents. Right after that had to tell us how different we were compared to others. To shine Christ was is all I want.. not because some book told me to. If that was the case I would drop all this and leave. Its just in me to show anyone love.. He loves them so much. All I could think was.. how can I share Christ. Gay can be offended very fast yet I have seen so many come to Christ set free never having that desire again just from the love of Christ.
