Literal. As Rev 11 clearly states, they come, they preach, they die, they revive, they are taken up. Their enemies shall behold all these things.
Rev 11:
3And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.
4These are the two olive trees, and the two candlesticks standing before the God of the earth.
5And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed.
6These have power to shut heaven, that it rain not in the days of their prophecy: and have power over waters to turn them to blood, and to smite the earth with all plagues, as often as they will.
7And when they shall have finished their testimony, the beast that ascendeth out of the bottomless pit shall make war against them, and shall overcome them, and kill them.
8And their dead bodies shall lie in the street of the great city, which spiritually is called Sodom and Egypt, where also our Lord was crucified.
9And they of the people and kindreds and tongues and nations shall see their dead bodies three days and an half, and shall not suffer their dead bodies to be put in graves.
10And they that dwell upon the earth shall rejoice over them, and make merry, and shall send gifts one to another; because these two prophets tormented them that dwelt on the earth.
11And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.
12And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither. And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them.

he is line for line DarbyThe 2Thessalonians2:4 act is the "transgression of desolation" of Daniel 8:12-13. It triggers the beginning of the Day of Lord, called the day of Christ in 2Thessalonian2:1-2.
The "abomination of desolation", a statue image of the beast-king setup on the temple mount is what will trigger the great tribulation, Matthew 24:15-21.
It is important to distinguish between the act, the transgression of desolation - and the statue image setup, the abomination of desolation.
Why?
Because there is the major matter of the revealed man of sin being killed, assassinated (Ezekiel 28:1-10), and shortly thereafter brought back to life to become the beast.
On my timeline chart I show the ToD and the AoD. ToD is associated with the person as the revealed man of sin (2Thessalonians2:3). AoD (setup on Day 1185) is associated with after the revealed man of sin becomes the beast.

I read some posts in this thread about whether there would be another temple built, and who will build it, and when.
Yes, there has to be another temple built to begin the daily sacrifice again. The Antichrist will about three years after the daily sacrifice resumes - stop it.
Who will build the next temple? The Jews will build the next temple. And the Antichrist will have a part in building it. Why so?
Because the Jews (Judaism) believe that the King of Israel messiah will take part in the rebuilding of the temple. The Antichrist as their newly anointed (by the false prophet) King of Israel messiah will meet what they expect of the messiah deepening the Jews' delusion about the person.
The person, as the King of Israel, thought-to- be messiah will also have the law of Moses read from the temple mount confirming the Mt. Sinai covenant that Moses required of all future leaders of Israel - on a 7year cycle - in Deuteronomy 31:9-13. Which will be the confirming of the covenant for 7 years in Daniel 9:27.
When ?
Well, we cannot say what calendar year it will all happen. But as related to an event, it will all take place following Gog/Magog, during the 7 years in Ezekiel 39:9-10.
Because of the parable of fig tree, we can know that the Gog/Magog event will take place some time before the end of calendar year 2030.

So not much time left. And for us Christians the greatest thing that can happen to us - 1Corinthians52-55, the mystery of the rapture/resurrection, when we put on incorruptible, and immortality. Look up! For your redemption draws near.

The Man of sin is not the beast, he is the human representative of the beast who is Satan. The man of sin will certainly be indwelt of the devil.
He does not set up an image but he himself will sit in the temple and declare that he is God. This IS the Abomination of desolation.

According to Revelation, the Gog/Magog event will not take place until after the 1000-year Millennial Reign, putting it closer to 3030. Perhaps you are thinking of the Battle of Armageddon?

This is the first resurrection. 6Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years. 7And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, 8And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. 9And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.

Many popular end times commentators on TV back in those days were proclaiming that the covenant in Daniel 9:27 was a peace treaty involving Israel. What they did not consider, probably because they were not aware of it, was in Deuteronomy 31:9-13 Moses made a requirement for all future leaders of Israel to essentially confirm the Mt. Sinai covenant for seven years.
Also none of those commentators outlined the five stages that the person goes through relevant to the 7 years. Without that
consideration, the end times sequence of events cannot not be properly understood.

Something amused me way back then I was attending chapel and met a bunch of beautiful young Americans, so enthusiastic. They were in England to see if they could learn who Antichrist would be, certain that he would be of Roman descent.
I put it to them that there more Latinos in America than every other nation combined including Italy ... they blinked, they had not thought of that. Antichrist will be world ruler. To-day the mindset of the Islamic nations and non-Islamic nations has turned full-circle against Israel. This has been prophesied and is now being fulfilled. There's a new Nazi party in town with a new nation leading them, we call them Iranians, the ancient Persians. Their hatred for the Jews has reach a boiling point. Out of them very soon is a man of sin with his high priest who will kill and destroy. Islam's hatred for Americans, not people like Biden, but the Christians who support Israel has intensified to the point, World-war is very, very near.
As for my above post, there is no way, none, that the Arab nations would ever concede one square-inch of the Temple Mt. for even a Jewish tent to be put up. Their anti-Christ will claim the Dome of the Rock is the Temple of God, and that is where he will establish his throne. Why? Because that's where the Lord Jesus said he will establish his.
