What is it with the American government? They have deserted Ukraine and they are trying to hamstring Israel's defence against Hamas. Now they are trying to interfere with Ukraine's limited defence against Russian aggression.

US has urged Ukraine to halt strikes on Russian energy ... (various sources including Reuters, Financial Times and Yahoo).

Russia depends on oil and gas exports to fund its illegal and immoral invasion of Ukraine. Ukraine has limited means to defend itself. One thing that it can do is exactly how the allies dealt with Germany in WW2. Ukraine is attacking oil refineries. Even if you have military vehicles, they are useless without fuel. Germany found that out the hard way. Yet the hypocrites in the White House want Ukraine to quit. What is the alternative? A return to the bad old days of the USSR.

In those days, only the USSR was a serious competitor to America. Now China looms large in the Pacific, India, Pakistan and North Korea are nuclear armed wildcards and Iran may well be on the verge of joining the nuclear club.

I'm not one for conspiracy theories, but if Americans want to destroy their credibility as a Superpower, this is the way to go about it. If they want to demonstrate their complete disregard for the rights of nations to defend themselves, Israel and Ukraine are examples. If America wants to prove to their allies that America is totally unreliable when the crunch come, this is how to go about it.

Does it matter? Yes. China's influence is strong in a number of nations that once were friendly to America. China has a military base in Africa, has militarised the South China Sea and is a serious threat to Taiwan and Japan. Indonesia is more or less neutral. However, if America is so unreliable, why would they stand up against China? The Philippines was moving towards China but changed course recently. What will they do now?

Australia and America have been close pretty much since WW2. What do we do? If I was in power, we would have our own nuclear weaponry. Japan is at least considering nuclear weapons. What does South Korea do?

Proverbs 18:24 says that those who have unreliable friends soon come to ruin. America is fast showing itself to be that kind of friend.

IMO the US lost any credibility it ever had a long time ago when we began to force our will on the world.
Stuck our nose in the affairs of others when we could not even take care of our own problems.
We abounded all morality and tried to force the world to do the same.
Nothing new here.
Stir things up and then walk away.

Ridiculous claim.
The contribution announced today will take Australia's overall support to Ukraine to approximately $960 million, including $780 million in assistance for Ukraine's Armed Forces.Feb 15, 2024

The Joe Biden administration and the U.S. Congress have directed about $75 billion in assistance to Ukraine, which includes humanitarian, financial, and military support,.

So those of us that oppose sending ANY funds to Ukraine have to live with the fact that we have given over 75 times the amount Australia has.

1. Australia is not a NATO member and has no direct interest in Europe.
2. The dollar value of US support for Ukraine is false. Most of what has been supplied is obsolescent, sitting in storage, actually costing the US money. Some of the munitions date back to the 1990's, although they have been expended
3. The US gets to test its weapons, strategies and tactics in real combat. This is priceless.
4. If Russia attacks a NATO country, what the US will pay will be peanuts compared to whatever they've paid to date.
5. No US blood is being shed. That compares well to the idiotic failed campaigns in Vietnam, x2 in Iraq and the catastrophe that is Afghanistan.
6. Russia's military is being degraded substantially. This is true for now, but Russia is finding ways around sanctions. They need to be driven out of Ukraine before they can rebuild.
7. Australia could and should do more. We could supply anti drone systems and I understand that is being worked on now.
8. Australia has a population of about 27 million. Our military is barely enough to defend ourselves. We are members of a military alliance with the UK and the US. We've backed the US in every military (mis)adventure. We do not have vast reserves of equipment sitting idle in storage.

The fact this man is president shows just how sick this nation is.
Many support and celebrate this sickness.
Even if his election was by fraud, there were many who voted for him and will again.
You would have to have your head buried in the sand to not know God's judgment is near.

I could not conceive of them being any more visible than they are now. Yes it could be worse. Being transgender is optional. Maybe next Easter it will be made mandatory.

We don't have any right to be interfering with any of this.

It's happening in Europe's backyard so they need to take care of it.

The US needs to take care of our southern border and the American people which is it's primary reason for existence.

Otherwise, the red states need to start their own country and leave the crumbling US government before it imploads all together..

Swell, now I guess they'll have transgender bunny rabbits laying rainbow colored eggs

As a general rule, I'm usually against sending vast amounts of money to places where it all mysteriously disappears.

But hey, that's just me.

Yeah, like the catastrophes of Vietnam and Afghanistan. What business did America have in those places? Or Iraq the second time around? America should pull out of NATO or support Ukraine fully. If Russia takes over Ukraine, NATO nations will be next in line. American blood will be spilled. It won't only be the supply of mostly excess and near obsolete military hardware.

Yes, the rot is well and truly set in here. Since gay "marriage" was legalised (not in God's sight), China has declared economic war on us, the economy is shot, housing is in desperately short supply, the government allows half a million migrants in who have nowhere to live. We used to be "The Lucky Country". Now you are lucky if you have a decent job, lucky if you have an affordable place to live and lucky if you have well off parents.

We have suffered a succession of bushfires, catastrophic floods and COVID. Whole towns have been taken over by gangs of children, who break into homes and businesses, bash and rob people and steal their cars, all with impunity. The answer is supposedly to raise the age of criminal responsibility so that kids can't be held responsible for their actions.

It is insanity, but it is what you get when a nation rejects God and His ways.

out of curiosity, what would it look like for the US to "support Ukraine fully"?

personally, i tend to think our government's foreign policy is abysmal. has been as long as i can remember.

Quit restricting the range of missiles being provided. Russia can launch missiles from much greater distances than Ukraine can.
Provide artillery shells. It's a drone and artillery war at present. Russia outproduces and out imports shells. Suppliers include North Korea.
Replace the Bradley AFV's and Abrams tanks that have been destroyed. They are obsolete anyway.
No one expects other nations to fight for Ukraine. It's not Afghanistan where the Afghan army was virtually non existent. And that is in spite of constant claims of how well the training was going. The US military in Afghanistan was scammed. Ukrainians are fighting for their survival. If Putin prevails, then other former Soviet Union nations are under threat, as Putin has already shown.

It is conveniently ignored that America and Russia gave Ukraine security guarantees. Ukraine surrendered its nuclear weaponry and long range bombers on that basis.

I agree with you with respect to US foreign policy. Either they should stay out of other nation's business completely or go all in. As it is, Ukraine is suffering a death by a thousand cuts. People are dying while politicians engage in point scoring. Australia has a military alliance with the US and UK. Right now, I'm not convinced that it is of any value at at all.

What a moronic and ignorant statement. Japan could never have occupied Australia. Americans have no idea of history. The first defeat inflicted on the Japanese was not by Americans. It was by Australians in New Guinea. But for us, America would have been facing a Japanese military with much more substantial bases.

You should learn a bit of history. I realise that Americans generally think that WW2 started with Pearl Harbor and that no one else was involved in the Pacific war. It's not true.
