Oh dear...

This threat is usually brought up in the Bible discussion forum. But I can understand why you would not want to bring it up there, as people yell at each other a lot in that forum.

I'm a Pentecostal, and yes I have spoken in other tongues, but it's not something you can or cannot do. It's something that happens as you are praying, not something you choose to or have the ability to do.

"Can you speak in tongues?"
"I have spoken in tongues, yes."
"Do it."
"Say what?"
"Speak in tongues."
"Can you swim?"
"Yeah."
"Do it."
"There's no water around here to swim in."
"Exactly. I don't just speak in tongues when the spirit's not flowing."

Can you please tell me the circumstances of the first time that happened to you? The first time you were able to speak in tongues ?I had something happened to me. I’m not sure it’s appropriate that I talk about it…

I dunno man. I was just talking to God and I started talking in a different language. And I only know English.

That's pretty much all I can tell you. The Bible can tell you more. Start with Acts chapter 2. "These people aren't drunk like you think they are. It's only 9:00 a.m." Also the part a little bit later with Cornelius.

I received it many years back. I was at church.

I don't remember what the sermon was about but there was an alter call about receiving that gift. I really felt the Holy Spirit wanted me to have it (felt that for a few weeks actually), so out of obedience I approach one of the elders who were standing at the front to pray for people. I told her that I feel that the Holy Spirit wants me to receive it, and she said, "Oh! So do it! I just got goose bumps just now!" So she prayed for me....

I started to speak in tongues. It actually scared me that I started to cry even as I continued to speak in tongues. But I wasn't going to refuse what the Holy Spirit wanted for me.

So that's how I received it. I'm not scared of speaking in tongues anymore. :)

I spoke in tongues one time when I was 17, it was in a dream, even before I knew it was tongues. That was over 30 years ago…

. Yesterday after listening to the late Pasyor Yongghi Cho was talking about tongues, I got really interested in it. I watched a video from another pastor on YouTube. I followed his two prayers, the first time… nothing happened. I first time bring happened I’ll be honest and I was disappointed. I closed my eyes in a few minutes later I tried again just to pray out loud. I close my eyes and started saying the word hallelujah for some reason just over and over like the spirit wanted me to say hallelujah I kept saying the words out loud hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah my mind started to jumble… And as I was vocal, vocalizing the word hallelujah the words started to roll hararahahrlahhaleah It was coming in and out like half my English words and half the spirit words or hararbakhebkahrlehrab, and then there would be periods where it was just pure jumbled words… It felt like my mouth was rolling around and my conscious brain was so surprised it was working. I started to cry uncontrollably and I wanted to continue, but I was too overwhelmed by emotions to continue so I stopped and just sat there in my car…. I was waiting for soccer practice for my son on the street. It was a crazy experience. I told my son about what happened… So this morning, I went to the park alone and I tried again to Replicate what happened three times really hard and sincerely, but I got nothing.m, only English came out. But still by that little 10 second or whatever you wanna call it my faith has exponentially grown.

Praise God.. Hallelujah, he gave me that sign.

Ooh, and I don’t attend a Pentecostal or charismatic church I had I go to a very conservative non-denominational evangelical church.

I was prayed over at a Full Gospel Business men's meeting. Nothing happened. About a month later I was in a worship service and an odd word came into my mind, so I spoke it, and then more words came, and I was speaking in a "tongue". Following that another man spoke in a tongues, and I felt the burden of the Holy SPirit, along with the first phrade of the Interpretation, which when I spoke what I had, the rest of the message flowed in, and I spoke it as it cam, and stopped speaking when the flow ended.

Currently, the church I go to doesn't speak in tongues.

Yes, I can turn it off and on when I pray because the Holy Spirit doesn't force it. That was one of the main things I learned about the Holy Spirit when I received the gift. It has to be that way so that when you're at church and everyone is praying, if one of them has special interpretation, you have to stop and let them continue. So you can't blame the Holy Spirit and say you couldn't control yourself. One of the fruits of the Holy Spirit is self-control.

I don't show off speaking in tongues - that's not what it's for. You're letting the Holy Spirit pray for what's needed through you. That is what it's for. Normal prayer is for what you know what to pray - speaking in tongues while praying is where the Holy Spirit prays for things that you didn't know needed to be prayed for.

Yes, that’s what the pastor said.. you pray first in your own and then the spirit can pray for things yuh didn’t even know…. I jsut want to do this when I’m alone praying to the Lord.

Stay blessed, that’s an awesome gift and I will keep prating for it to come to me again.

What happened to this chat site haven't been in a while and different doesn't feel as useful no more live chat disappointing especially when I've donated to this place in the past Speaking In Tongues and interesting subject which I learned some valuable information on the end of the day I used to think the people that speaking gibberish or just falls baking it and I think I've been told that when you do it brings a joy inside of yourself that brings you closer to God still I couldn't do it personally I'd feel fully to fake Speaking In Tongues without it being for a purpose that brought glory to the Lord

Why would you fake anything if you’re alone?

If I could just do it on command, like a party trick, it wouldn't be very special now would it?

Speaking in other tongues is not something to seek. It is a symptom of something else that you really do want to seek. It is an outward manifestation.

Seeking tongues is like trying to get the sound of a car motor. If all you want is the sound you can play an audio file. But it won't get you where you need to go. But if you are using a car to get where you need to go, the sound of the car motor will be there with it.

1 Corinthians 14:9-11:

“So with yourselves, if with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what you say? For you will be speaking into the air. There are doubtless many different languages in the world, and none is without meaning, but if I do not know the meaning of the language, I will be a foreigner to the speaker and the speaker a foreigner to me.” (
what I'm saying is making up jumbo Monday words I don't feel is God's purpose for us speaking in tongues at home's one thing but to do it in a crowd that's not of God it's written If any speak in a tongue, let there be only two or at most three, and each in turn, and let someone interpret. But if there is no one to interpret, let each of them keep silent in the church and speak to himself and to God.
