Ch.11, 10 verses
God says He will send one more plague.
God causes the Egyptians to be very favorable to the children of Israel and and they gave them jewels of silver and gold. And Moses was revered.
The final plague was that all the firstborn in Egypt would die, from Pharaoh's firstborn to the servant's firstborn, and even the firstborn of the beasts.
God continued to harden Pharaoh's heart so that God's wonders would be multiplied.

Ch.12, 51 verses
God said that that month would now be the first month of the year to them.

On the 10th day of this month, they were to sacrifice a lamb and put the blood on the door posts. They were to eat the roasted meat that night. Only unleavened bread was allowed (no yeasty bread). Bitter herbs were also to be a part of the meal. If any meat remained in the morning, it was to be burned. They were to be fully clothed as if they were going to leave at any moment. This is the Passover.
All those who have the blood on the door posts, the Lord will passover and they will not die. They were not to leave out the door until morning.
The Lord describes how they are to observe the Feast of the Unleavened Bread. Unleavened bread was symbolic. "Unleavened bread represented the promised Savior—the “bread from heaven.” Since the Bible sometimes uses leaven as a symbol of sin, the unleavened bread was a symbol of the sinless Messiah."
When the Lord smote the firstborn of Egypt that night, there was a great cry in the land and there was not one household that didn't have at least one dead.
Pharaoh sent them away in the night and the Egyptians were anxious for them to leave.
A great number left Egypt. 600,000 men. So, no doubt well over a million people left. Some estimate that after you add in an estimate of women and children the amount of people leaving was around 2.5 million. Then you have all the livestock and all their belongings. The exodus from Egypt would no doubt have been quite a sight to have seen!

Ch. 13, 22 verses
Abib is the first month in the Hebrew calendar.
I have to research this when I have more time. There are different variations of the Hebrew calendar when you do an image search; some are still using January to December
The Lord promises to bring them into the land that He had promised to their fathers.
The Lord again instructs them on how to observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, as it is a sign and a memorial.
The Lord leads the people. He leads them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.
Moses takes the bones of Joseph with them!

Ch. 14, 31 verses
The Pharaoh's heart is hardened. Again. He gets himself ready and takes every chariot in Egypt and all the captains and all his army. Oh, the fool.
As the Egyptians draw near, the children of Israel are afraid and they cried out to the Lord.
The children of Israel get whiny. "Why didn't you leave us in Egypt? Why did you bring us out here to die?"
-But, verse 13 and 14 are touching.-
Moses stretched forth his hand over the waters and the Lord caused a strong wind all night. And the water was divided and there was dry land. And the people traveled on the dry land with a wall of water on either side of them. Must have been an exhilarating feeling.
The Lord told Moses to stretch his hands over the water, and the Lord brought the water together and the Lord overthrew the Egyptians in the sea.
The people saw all of this and feared the Lord.

Ch.15, 27 verses
The song of Moses and Israel vs. 1-21
They left the Red Sea and went into the wilderness, after 3 days they found no water. The came to Marah, but the waters were bitter there. The people grumbled. Moses cries out to the Lord, the Lord directs him to a tree, Moses throws the tree into the water, and the waters become drinkable.
The Lord tells the people to listen to Him carefully and to do what is right and to follow His commandments, and in doing so they will be well.
The people came to Elim where they camped by the waters.

Ch. 16, 36 verses
They leave Elim and go to Sin on the 15th of the month of Ziv.
The people murmur against Moses and Aaron. Here we go again!
Moses tells them that their murmurs are not against him and Aaron, but against the Lord!
The Lord gave them flesh in the evening and manna in the morning.
I like verse 18. Those that gathered more than they should had, had nothing leftover. Those that gathered little had no lack!

The people are told not to leave any until the morning. Did they listen. Of course not! As a result, it bred worms and stank.
The only day they were allowed to gather more and leave it till morning was the 6th day, for the following day was the Sabbath.
The Lord commanded that a tenth part of an ephah of manna be put in a jar to keep as a memorial. The children of Israel ate manna for 40 years.
Ch.17, 16 verses
They travel to Rephidim where there is no water. So, what do they do? They murmur again, of course!
Moses cries out to the Lord. The Lord tells him to smite the rock in Horeb, and water flowed out. Then Moses calls the place Massah and Meribah, meaning testing and quarreling.
The Amalekites fight the children of Israel. The Amalekites descended from Esau. Amalek is a son of Esau's first-born son Eliphaz and of the concubine Timna.
I had a feeling Amalek was mentioned before but didn't go back and check. Thanks for this note!
As long as Moses held up his hand, the Israelites prevailed. When he let his hand down, the Amakekites prevailed. So, Aaron and Hur had him set down and they held up his hands.
This shows us that should let others help us. I think it is what the Lord wants, for us to help each other. I am terrible at this. I have a hard time asking for help or letting others help. I try to remember that sometimes the Lord's help comes through others.

Joshua weakened Amalek and the Lord promised to wipe out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.
Ch. 18, 27 verses
Jethro, Moses FIL, arrives with Moses' wife and offspring.
Jethro and Moses visit. Jethro rejoices after hearing all that the Lord had done.
Jethro watches Moses judging the people. Jethro advises Moses to choose able bodied men to be rulers over thousands, hundreds, 50s, and tens. These men judged the people, but the difficult cases were brought to Moses.
Then Jethro departed back to his own land.

Ch.19, 25 verses
In the month of Sivan, they came into the wilderness of Sinai.
I looked up the month of Sivan. It is the month of May-June on the Hebrew calendar.
Moses went up to the Lord. The Lord said, "If ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine."
Moses came down and told the elders of the people what the Lord had commanded. The people said that they would do all that the Lord had spoken. Moses passes the message on to the Lord. The Lord says he's going to come in a thick cloud so that the people may hear His voice. Moses passes this message to the people. Moses sanctifies the people. Gods warns that the people are not allowed to go up the mountain, nor are they allowed to even touch the border of it. Nor animals either.
The Lord descends on mount Sinai. Smoke ascends and the mountain quakes greatly. The Lord calls Moses up and he goes up. Then He sends him back down to speak to the people.
Ch. 20, 26 verses
The 10 Commandments are given.
- Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.
- Thou shalt not make any graven images.
- Thou shalt not take the Lord's name in vain.
- Thou shalt remember the Sabbath day.
- Thou shalt honor thy father and thy mother.
- Thou shalt not murder.
- Thou shalt not commit adultery.
- Thou shalt not steal.
- Thou shalt not bear false witness.
- Thou shalt not covet.
Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
God instructs Moses concerning sacrifices.

I should have noted that I was using the names of the months from the days before the Babylonia captivity, since we are currently in those days in the Bible. We got a ways to go before we get to the captivity, the calendar changes after the Babylonian Exile.

EXODUS CHAPTER 21 NOTES

v1-11 Law of servants

v12 “He that smiteth a man, so that he die, shall be surely put to death.”

v13 “And if a man lie not in wait, but God deliver him into his hand; then I will appoint thee a place whiter he shall flee.” - a case where it is justified

v14 “But if a man come presumptuously upon his neighbour, to slay him with guile; thou shalt take him from mine alter, that he may die.” -
Presumptuous meaning is (of a person or their behavior) failing to observe the limits of what is permitted or appropriate. Guile meaning is sly or cunning intelligence

v15 He that kills his mother or father will surely be put to death

v16 “And he that stealeth a man, and selleth him, or if he be found in his hand, he shall surely be put to death.”- a sin unto death that the does not involve the killing of another man

v17 He that curse his father or mother shall be put to death - a sin unto death that the does not involve the killing of another man

v18-19 If you injure someone you pay for their loss time and medical expenses to get healed

v20 If a master kills his servant he is punished

v22 Not sure what is meant by “…yet no mischief follow…” there is punishment according to what the judges determine

v23 “And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life,” - in reference to verse 22

v26-27 If a master injures the eye or tooth of his servant, he should let the servant go

v28 If an ox (animal) kills a man or woman it should be put to death and not eaten

v29 If an ox (animal) kills from the owner's negligence, then the owner shall die too with the ox

v30-32 Not clear on these verses

v33-34 If an ox (animal) falls into someone’s pit, the owner of the pit should pay the owner of the ox; the dead ox is now the owner of the pit

v35 If someone’s ox (animal) kills another’s, they should sell the live ox and split the money, and divide the dead animal

v16 Who you lie with should become your wife

v18 “Thous shalt not suffer a witch to live.” - The Bible acknowledges there are witches

v19 “Whoever lieth with a beast shall surely be put to death.” - a sin unto death that does not involve the killing of another man

v20 Those who sacrifice to false gods will be destroyed

v21 Vex meaning is make (someone) feel annoyed, frustrated, or worried, especially with trivial matters

v22-24 Important to take care of widows and the fatherless; another sin unto death that does not involve the killing of another man (verse 24)

v25 Usurer meaning one that lends money especially at an exorbitant rate. Usury meaning is the illegal action or practice of lending money at unreasonably high rates of interest

v28 Revile meaning criticize in an abusive or angrily insulting manner. Should not curse rulers

v29 “Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.” - I wonder in what manner liquors were used

v20-30 God says he will send the children of Israel an angel that will bring them into the lands of the Canaanites. He warns to obey him. God repeatedly says not to serve the gods of the Canaanites. Little by little God will drive out the Canaanites until the children of Israel inherit the land

v31 “And I will set thy bounds from the Red sea even unto the sea of the Philistines, and from the desert unto the river: for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand; and thou shalt drive them out before thee.”

I think EX 20:1-17 teaches the important truth that God requires moral perfection (cf. DT 5:6-21). Of course each of the Ten Commandments is important, and Jesus affirmed many of them in the “Sermon on the Mount (MT 5:21-48). The key point is that all commandments teach us to cooperate with the Lawgiver (RM 3:20, GL 3:24), whose moral will was not ended or rescinded but rather fulfilled or culminated by the death of Messiah (RM 10:4).

There are additional moral precepts, such as those found in EX 21, 22 & LV 18-20, but most of the other Mosaic commands are either part of the sacrificial system or instructions for treating various health problems.

Jesus taught that God’s standard is perfection (cf. LV 19:1), and he clarified that the Sabbath was made for the sake of humankind (MT 12:7f.), perhaps so they would have a day to rest and worship God. However, Paul indicated (in CL 2:16f., cf. 1CR 10:23&31) that we should serve God every day or continually, and both he and Jesus explained how the perfect “rest” is attained (Paul in 2THS 5:16-22 & PHP 3:7-9, cf. HB 4:9, and Jesus in MT 11:28).

EXODUS CHAPTER 28 NOTES

v1 “And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons.” - Priest was mentioned earlier in the Bible regarding Jethro (Reuel) and the Egyptians. Preist meaning is someone who is authorized to perform the sacred rites of a religion especially as a mediatory agent between humans and God. There is only one true God. Since the Egyptians had priests and Jethro was a priest not knowing who he was serving, I did not pay attention to the usage of priest. Now the word priest is being used in the children of Israel. Nowadays when you hear the word priest, most think of the Catholic church, as did I. Priest is a word of a position and is not assigned to a particular faith from what I have learned.

v2 “And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty.” - specific garments were made for the priests

v4 The garments for priesthood

v5-6 The colors gold, blue, purple, and scarlet have been repeated throughout the making of the tabernacle and now the making of the ephod. Ephod meaning a linen apron worn in ancient Hebrew rites. especially : a vestment for the high priest. Vestment (archaic) meaning a garment, especially a ceremonial or official robe

v7-14 Further details of the ephod

v15 The breastplate of judgment should be made after the work of the ephod. It should have the same colors gold, blue, purple, and scarlet

v29 “And Aaron shall bear the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment upon his heart, when he goeth unto the holy place, for a memorial before the Lord continually.” - does this show that Aaron is the high priest?

v30 Urim and the Thummim doesn’t seem have a concrete definition when doing a search. It appears that they are two objects/elements that are unknown today

v30 “…and Aaron shall bear the judgment of the children of Israel upon his heart before the Lord continually.” - I wonder where Moses is at this time. Is God saying these things to Moses?

v31 The robe of the ephod was all blue

v32-34 Further description of the ephod

v35 “And it shall be upon Aaron to minister: and his sound shall be heard when he goeth in unto the holy place before the Lord, and when he cometh out, that he die not.” - Does this mean Aaron would be seeing God when he goes into the holy place before the Lord?

v37 Mitre meaning something rolled round the head; the turban or head-dress of the high priest

v38 “And it shall be upon Aaron’s forehead, that Aaron may bear the iniquity of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall hallow in all their holy gifts; and it shall be always upon his forehead, that they may be accepted before the Lord.” - Aaron wore the mitre and its representation

v40-41 Aaron’s sons (and his brother) wore coats, girdles, and bonnets

v41 Is it referring to Moses or is it referring to his brothers through God in verse 1? Aaron’s sons were consecrated and sanctified that they may minister unto God in the priest’s office

v43 “And they shall be upon Aaron, and upon his sons, when they come in unto the tabernacle of the congregation, or when they come near unto the altar to minister in the holy place; that they bear not iniquity, and die: it shall be a statute for ever unto him and is see after him.” - “a statute for ever unto him and his seed after him.”

I should have been more specific. Do you believe God requires moral perfection at the time of death before entering heaven? (this is what I assumed you meant)

I shared the most direct answer from GW (Jesus per HB 2:10 & 4:14--15.), which I affirm, (but I hope you understand the doctrines of substitutionary atonement and imputed righteousness that explain why sinners who repent and accept Christ as Lord are justified and qualified for heaven :^)

I'm not sure what this mean "Aah, but you DID make the following comment" is referring to. I mentioned that I was making an "assumption." I could only assume because you did not answer directly. I don't use assumptions as facts, that is why I replied in that way if you wanted to make a confirmed statement based on what you believe. I also told you that I have not read up until that point, therefore, you know I would not read it for some time as I am in Exodus. Knowing that, to answer my question, if you wanted to, you would not reply with a verse ahead of where I am currently reading; this has been discussed many times before that I am not reading ahead. I hope this make sense:)

It refers to the fact that communicated assumption is a comment, and I confirmed that I believe HB 2:10 & 4:14--15 teach that Jesus is the moral perfection that God requires. I do not understand why it is a problem to turn in your Bible from Exodus to Hebrews for a couple of minutes. Don't blame me that your question required an answer from the NT!

"Substitutionary atonement" means that Jesus paid the punishment we deserve for our sins.

"Imputed righteousness" means that God views those who repent and accept Jesus as sharing Christ's perfection.

(You're welcome for not citing the NT Scriptural basis for these doctrines :)
