I teach the teen Sunday school at our church in addition to running out teen youth program each week. I am not as good or active in evangelism as I should be, although I do have some experience.

One of our girls is very interested In evangelism and has been very active doing this within her friend group. 14 years old and I'm proud of her.

She complained last night that we study evangelism from the Bible but we are missing the practical "how to do it". She's right. So I'm going to start a series on the practical application of evangelism.

I plan to start with the commitment required - all the hardships the apostles suffered being evangelists. And then go through the examples in the Bible of Jesus and the Epostles and the techniques they used.

I'm also looking for a really good Bible focused book or curriculum on the practical side of getting out and doing it effectively.

Recommendations appreciated.

When it comes to evangelism, the approach pretty much needs to be this:

Law to the proud, and grace to the humble.

In other words, if someone is proud and self-righteous, then God's law is required to convince them of their need for a Savior.

1Ti 1:8
But we know that the law is good, if a man use it lawfully;
1Ti 1:9
Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers,
1Ti 1:10
For whoremongers, for them that defile themselves with mankind, for menstealers, for liars, for perjured persons, and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine;
1Ti 1:11
According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

Elsewhere, Paul had the following to say about God's law.

Rom 3:19
Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

God's law is designed to stop every mouth and to show everyone in the world that they are guilty before God. It is only the guilty who are realistically going to seek a pardon, or it is only the sick who are going to recognize their need for a doctor. Elsewhere, Paul called God's law the ministration of death (2 Cor. 3:7) and the ministration of condemnation (2 Cor. 3:9). Unless proud and self-righteous sinners come to the realization that they are under a Divine death sentence which will lead to eternal condemnation, they will not cry out for a Savior.

At the other extreme, if someone is already broken in spirit and knows that they are a sinner, then God's grace can immediately be applied to bring salvation.

As someone who has done quite a bit of evangelism myself, I think that I can pretty much guarantee you that more proud and self-righteous people than humble people are going to be encountered when evangelizing. Ray Comfort's book, "Hell's Best Kept Secret," has helped me tremendously in the area of showing proud and self-righteous sinners their need for a Savior, and many have been led to salvation through faith in Christ as a direct result.

Here is a link to a pdf file which will give you a good idea of what the book is about if you might consider using it.

Some might go the opposite route, and there are quite a few here who preach the law to the converted.
Any who, grace is needed by the unbelievers as well, for God draws us with loving kindness... The
rebel is more than likely sick and tired of being told what a sinner they are. Poor blind sinner!
Finding how best to love these may be fraught with difficulties only prayer can resolve.

"Share Jesus Without Fear" is a program that teaches the scriptures and conversation starters for people to use.

I recommend not using rehearsed lines and make more normal conversation. But they are a starting place for teens to use.

It shows the "Roman Road" and a few others as well. Simple but effective method.

However....

People know who you are by reputation. I personally found that those with some of life's most difficult questions and problems came to me due to WHO I was....because they knew I was a Christian.
I was not ever condemning, I never told people they should stop sinning or how sinful their lives were. But I didn't hide the fact that I believed and went to church.

Youth teen groups?
It's about fitting in by playing games, "hanging out" and discovering who you want to be. That does more to evangelize than anything else.
Have a "cool" lounge for the kids to play video games in. A "bar" for coffees, veggie drinks, and sodas. Of course wi-fi for their phones. Then one of the stories of scripture with TONS of anthropology to help explain it more thoroughly.

Others will come if invited....

Kids know right from wrong without having to be told. Hanging out at church is always "right"....and if it's fun and they can make friends? You will have to kick them out to get sleep.

My question is important.
Acts chapter 8 is the description of an evangelist. Philip established churches leading people to Christ. His message is clear in the King James Bible. It is missing from some of the popular critical texts versions I've taken time to check.
If you go by the wrong Bible to study evangelism, you will possibly get the wrong gospel.

My second question is also important.
You have a good desire to teach the good news. I have been evangelizing for years and can help if you want it.

I am curious about what this person has to say about that to -----
2 John 1:11

If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: 11For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds

Folks in our forum have big hearts and want to be a blessing to strangers.
That's an honorable desire.
However, we should discern carefully those we don't know. When someone knocks on my door, I want to know what his gospel is. He may even sound right at first as he mumbles that he's from the church of latter day saints. I'm not saying this guy is, but we don't know if we are being a partaker of a man spreading a false gospel or not.

To Me I would Question what this person is Teaching his Teen Sunday School ----as you can't Truly Evangelize without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit ---

You Must be Born Again to truly be an Evangelist --------

-Many Try but they are False Christians ----teaching their own intellectual agenda ----sending people to their Eternal Death not their Eternal Life -----

AI Overview

In the Bible, evangelism is the act of sharing the Christian gospel, or the good news of Jesus Christ.

The word for evangelism in the Bible is euangelizo, which comes from the Greek word for gospel, euangelion.

Evangelism is a way to fulfill Christ's call to be His witnesses. ==I say --=Preaching the Good News of The Grace of Jesus Christ
  • Preaching the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus
  • Loving fellow believers
  • Celebrating the Lord's Supper

Bible Verses about Evangelism ----there are 16 verses here ----Read all for yourself ----I just posted a few

https://www.biblestudytools.com/topical-verses/bible-verses-about-evangelism/

Evangelism is the promotion or act of publicly preaching the Gospel with the intention of spreading the message and teachings of Jesus Christ. Christians who specialize in evangelism are often known as evangelists, whether they are in their home communities or living as missionaries in the field. This is a collection of Bible verses relating to the theme of evangelism, spreading the teachings of Jesus

Acts 2:38 -----this is Important to do for the First step in Evangelizing

38 Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

I say -----Without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit your Evangelizing is from Satan not God ----

1 Peter 3:15
15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,

2 Corinthians 5:20
20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God.

2 Timothy 2:15
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

2 Timothy 4:5
5 But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.

When someone knocks on my door, I want to know what his gospel is. He may even sound right at first as he mumbles that he's from the church of latter day saints. I'm not saying this guy is, but we don't know if we are being a partaker of a man spreading a false gospel or not.
Discerning gospels is good and right and proper, but have you ever encountered a JW or LDS member asking strangers for advice on how to spread their "gospel"? I haven't....they never ask because they think they already know. The OP asked an honest question about a spiritual calling that might not be his primary gift (We are all called to evangelize, but some are called to it as a primary gift). Perhaps teaching and shepherding are his primary gifts, seeing as how he is a youth pastor.

@Maintenanceguy - our youth group does emphasize spreading the gospel, but we try to impress on the kids that The Holy Spirit uses different people in different ways. Some of the bolder, more logical ones are drawn to apologetics. Others are more emotional and God uses them to touch hearts in ways that logic can't. The youth pastor and I are both very open with the kids about how we witness and often share stories about our spiritual interactions outside of youth group (of course the gospel is preached at youth group as well).

A few years ago we did a study on spiritual gifts and how they are used to advance God's kingdom. We also started an open discussion every week asking if anyone had any stories of ways they might have impacted someone for Jesus. We told them anything that promoted Jesus was valid to mention, so even if a kid was complimented for being helpful and they told them that Jesus makes them want to help people, we still celebrated that (some of our kids are only 11).

Well let me tell you, the stories started rolling in. Us grownups were slightly shocked. The kids were offering to pray for strangers, witnessing to coworkers, having spiritual conversations with customers at work, inviting random strangers to church..... and we knew the stories were true because some of the people actually showed up or called the pastor to tell him how much the youths had blessed them. 3 of the older teens actually got to baptize people they led to Jesus, that was SO cool to see! Several of them have are now on the mission field and doing well.

Anyway...I do not have a curriculum to share because we freelanced it using various Bible passages, but I would definitely recommend impressing on the kids that God can use them, they should pray for The Holy Spirit's leading, and even just a "small" pro-Jesus comment is a better witness than saying nothing at all. The younger ones especially seem to do well with the tiny steps, it's a lot less intimidating than trying to argue apologetics with a grown adult. Having some positive experiences will boost their confidence and also help them learn to recognize leading. And once they realize what a joy serving God can be, they want to do it on their own without us telling them to.

Sometimes I think we try to give grownup jobs to kids, while completely neglecting the unique power and sincerity that comes with their youth. For of such is the Kingdom of Heaven.......

I've read some of your other posts about the group you and your wife are leading. I believe God is guiding you and blessing your efforts, I commend you for wanting to teach the kids how to witness, and I hope some of the above was at least remotely helpful!

All the best-

@HealthAndHappiness - sorry if I sounded too critical, it's too late to edit and I know you were just being cautious. I just get frustrated when people post asking for practical advice on spiritual areas they want to work on and end up called a heretic and having their salvation questioned. I know you were not doing that but others are heading in that direction and I find it very frustrating.

I know you have a heart for evangelism and I commend you for living it out!

No worries Snackersmom.

You are always welcome to disagree .
No hard feelings. I've even disagreed with some things I used to believe myself. I was pleased to hear that he wants to teach a teenager evangelism.
What is his idea of evangelism/ good news?
I don't know. At the time he had just joined and I don't know him anymore than he knows us. He's a newbie/a stranger. Besides, for all he knows, we could be providing unbiblical information.

Let's look at his initial statements.

"She complained last night that we study evangelism from the Bible but we are missing the practical "how to do it". She's right. So I'm going to start a series on the practical application of evangelism."
"I plan to start with the commitment required - all the hardships the apostles suffered being evangelists.

First, I provided the chapter from the Bible that details the one person, Philip, who was called an Evangelist. It does include "How to do it" IF he uses the right Bible. I find it very practical. He decided to not answer my question. It was a relevant question because if he happens to use the NIV for example, it leaves out verse 37.

As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, “Look, here is water. What can stand in the way of my being baptized?
Act 8:37

Act 8:38 - And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.

It gives the idea that water baptism is what saves. That's the same with other pop contemporary versions, like the ESV that a former pastor used when I attended his church.

And as they were going along the road they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “See, here is water! What prevents me from being baptized?”
Act 8:37

Act 8:38 - And he commanded the chariot to stop, and they both went down into the water, Philip and the eunuch, and he baptized him.

Where is the part the 14 year old girl was missing from her Sunday school teacher?
"She complained last night that we study evangelism from the Bible but we are missing the practical "how to do it". She's right. "

Could it be that he is teaching from Bibles that offer works focused or incomplete gospels? They mentioned a question that was left unanswered with nothing more than an example of water Baptism. If that's missing from his curriculum, he doesn't need a book by some lost evangelist who requires obedience to the law to be saved.
MM needs to start with the real complete Word of God.
Here is what God's Holy Word says in the one major chapter on the work of an evangelist.

Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized? 37And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. 38And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

1. Philip the Evangelist preached into him Jesus.
2. Before he would baptize him, he needed to get saved by believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

That's very practical IF you use the real Word of God. Some have criticized me often for my choice for using the King James Bible. Those guys aren't Mormons, but I have never once read them attempt to lead anyone to Christ. Anyhow, I could give many examples
of people in evangelical, non denominational, charismatic, and Baptist churches that preached a false gospel and undermined the faith of the young.
I don't assume Maintenance Man is and did not want others to. I just asked him 2 strait forward, common questions about his subject so I know how to proceed. At the same time we should not assume he's saved from his testimony. He gave no indication of understanding the gospel. I hope he does. If not, he give his testimony of salvation. He teaches a class so I don't expect him to be too bashful to speak to the most important question posed to him in this thread.

MM said,
"I plan to start with the commitment required - all the hardships the apostles suffered being evangelists. "

Does he mean that it's hard to get saved? I have no idea.
Do we have to suffer as Jesus and His apostles or make a "commitment" to be saved?

My second Question was, What do you believe you must do to be saved?

He sidestepped the questions and diverted to their relevancy, so he must not want to talk about it.
I never assumed he was a Jehovah false Witness. I was using a figure of speech to show that ...
A. IF he's is spreading a false gospel to his students, I don't want to come under the anger of God for assisting him, by becoming a partaker of the evil deeds. Nearly every new testament book/ epistle warns against that. God hates false gospels. I do too. Not assuming anything other than that question is off limits.

B. I don't assume he is in a cult or anything. I met many of folks who were trusting their works and we're in so called evangelism.

EBC ,The College and Career Sunday school teacher, who bragged about getting his degree from Liberty University, tried to convince his students that the KJ Bible was false and not to be trusted in Key areas. His name's was Keys and he was a false prophet who taught a works based salvation from the pulpit.
My pastor's other best friend was Dave and he taught a hard-core works salvation that was also false. He was ordained by the pastor. My pastor at the time approved of multiple false gospels. I approached him about it a number of times. My affiliation with him held me back from greater works for the Lord. I'm done with those hard lessons.

More recently, there was the leader of the Non denominational evangelical mega church evangelism group. The pastor had an invitation for anyone who wanted to get saved. I went forward to lead others to Christ with an open Bible. The leader didn't know and thought I came to get saved. He did not mention Jesus once, but he wanted me to "speak in tongues and be baptized by the Holy Ghost."
The leader of the evangelism group wasn't even saved.

I could give a lot more examples, but you understand why I asked those 2 simple questions.

I'm not trying to get on Maintenance Man's case. I just want to know who I'm talking to and communicate with the man.
I could teach him the techniques/ how too of evangelism from Jesus'own statements.
There are classes for soul winners available who lead people to Christ on a regular basis.
Perhaps Maintenance Man might just need to study the clear, uncluttered gospel, maybe get saved(?), and keep it basic for his 14 yo. Student. I'd love to see that. She might need someone to lead her to Christ... and take her soul winning like my former SS teacher, Dan did at that age.

Recently, Dan came to Mom's funeral and it brought tears to my eyes. He is a brother indeed. He had an impact on my life that established a weekly responsibility for leading folks to Christ that led to a lifetime of evangelism. I want to continue helping others share the love of Christ.

Evangelize The Word straight from the Word ----with God in you[/QUOTE]

True, I must have missed that other thread about theology.
I really wasn't trying to embarrass this new guy or anything. You have heard me ask that question a hundred times of others. I think we simply need to get that answered before waisting time helping someone lead others astray OR we need a straight answer in order to bless another brother who is on God's side. I think you and I have just been wanting a forthright answer in order to help or not help, whatever the case might be.

When Saul first got saved,he had no problem confessing Christ as the only way.

But Saul increased the more in strength, and confounded the Jews which dwelt in Damascus, proving that this is very Christ."
Acts 9:22

@studentoftheword ,

Sorry about the "quote" in the post just preceding this. It appears as if I was saying the first three quarters of it, when in fact it was you that I responded to. The entire first portion was your writing. I must've accidentally reformatted it and did not proofread it before posting. I just went back to read again and it's confusing. My response didn't begin until after the END "" {Quote} ".

I didn't want to take credit for your work brother.
Have a blessed day.
