I heard a story last night that made me ask myself the question in the thread. It came out of nowhere. Hubby and I were watching a video about visiting the Titanic museum in TN.It is of interest to me because the disaster happened close to where I grew up and I've heard the story often. But at the very end of the video one of the folk that works there told this amazing story. I haven't really looked into it yet but it made me think deeply on this question of assurance.

Apparently there was a particular minister on the ship. He was heading to preach at Moody's church in America. When he realized the great ship was going down he began calling out " Women, children and the unsaved, get in the lifeboats"!! He passed a man without a life vest and asked him if he was saved. When the man said he wasn't, he gave him his life vest and said " I don't need this, I'm not going down, I'm going up!" The pastor grabbed something to hold on to and he floated past a man he shouted to him " Are you saved?!" the man said that he wasn't. The pastor said "Believe on Jesus!". Some time later the pastor passed the man again and shouted " Are you saved yet?!!" The man said no, that he didn't think he was. The pastor said " Believe on the Lord and you will be saved!!" That was the last time the man saw the preacher, but he said he did indeed become saved that night. What a testimony! What an assurance! The preacher still had souls on his mind up till his last breath. The question is, are you as assured of your own salvation?

I say
We need to be careful about simplifying this instruction given to this man by the pastor
"Believe on Jesus!".

Well I guess you could say Believe on Jesus
I think----- believe in Jesus----- is a better way of saying it ----and I think all scripture says Believe IN Jesus ----not On Jesus --just saying

From AI
In the New Testament, "believe in" Christ is used in several places, including:

  • John 3:16: "Whoever believes in him"
  • John 1:12: "Those who believe in his name"
Now that being said -----Is the Pastor himself really Saved ?????

He says this ----
" I don't need this, I'm not going down, I'm going up!"

I say
So it seems he is a Saved Person -???---but there are many Pastors who may think they are Saved and they are really not Saved and so we can only Hope that this Pastor Had the Right Faith to be Saved ----

This faith we speak of here is a Faith that is a Deeper belief than just us believing in a person or thing ----belief here is in your Heart and this belief is (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth)

Romans 10:9

Amplified Bible, Classic Edition

9 Because if you acknowledge and confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and in your heart believe (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved

Now this is said

That was the last time the man saw the preacher, but he said he did indeed become saved that night.
What a testimony! What an assurance! The preacher still had souls on his mind up till his last breath. The question is, are you as assured of your own salvation?
So do we really think the Man was saved that night -----and had the right Faith which comes from hearing the Word and a Faith that was in His Heart to (adhere to, trust in, and rely on the truth) ---that that God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead ----

Was his Salvation secure ????---Was the Pastors Salvation Secure ?????

When we tell people that all you need to do is believe in Jesus to be saved ----we need to explain to them what the right Faith is --how they get it and adhere to ---trust in and rely on the truth of the Word to be saved ---

In my view there is not enough information given to really say the Pastor or the man went up instead of down --

What a testimony! What an assurance!
Was it a right testimony ----?????-------Was it the right assurance ??????

The preacher still had souls on his mind up till his last breath.
I say ----That I agree with ----:D:cautious::cautious:

The question is, are you as assured of your own salvation?

I personally am -----

Being as how I was there when it happened, I'm 100% sure.
Another question you might ask is on what basis does someone believe they are saved? In other words, why are they convinced?

Our faithfulness to Jesus after conversion goes up and down.

Jesus, in verses like John 5:24, says those who have believed in Him, have everlasting, or eternal life.

So the assurance is from His commitment to the believer, rather than the believer being sure 'they have been good enough'.

John 3:36 and 8:40 are more scriptures among others.

The key thing is when the sinner believes on Jesus..are they trusting in their own behaviour, or in Jesus Christ alone?

100% certain. My trust and confidence is in the finished work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection. To ":unsave" me would require going back through time and reversing what Jesus did. Of course, that is impossible. "It is finished!"

Re "The question is, are you as assured of your own salvation?": Is this question the same as "Are you sure you accept Christ Jesus as Lord?" Can one be 57% sure he accepts Christ? Is it not a binary decision?

Someone believes Jesus is God, that He lived sinless, died and rose again..that by believing in Him, they have everlasting life..

That's it.

100 percent sure.

I don't believe I'll be saved.

But you can be. It can be settled here and now. So what is holding you back? Something in your past (you don't need to post it) God is more merciful than we can ever imagine. You can certainly be saved, if you want to believe.
