Have you ever been in this position
It's the stay at home thing, maybe isolated, with only children for company, maybe no car/transport, huge house to clean/look after...other half busy at work...
Or are you all happy and joyful ? I hope so.
What are the pros and cons of being a housewife? Are you a nanny and babysitter as well or is that incorporated into being a wife and mother.
What about a husband...what happens if you can't DIY? Do you just pay someone else to do it?
What if you have no children...do you have pets instead?

Do you take in boarders? Do you have spare rooms or are they filled with your stuff?
How long till your mortgage is paid off, or are you always on top of the rent? How many times have you moved after you've settled in/married?
Have you downsized after empty nesting?

Just curious. Maybe I'm just being nosy, but if it's none of my business, you don't have to answer.
Blessings to those who do share though, so we may learn from it.

I think our current society makes being a housewife look boring but I don't think it is actually that way. If I was a housewife, I'd have a garden to grow vegetables. It it's a homestead, I'd have barnyard animals to tend to also. I'll preserve the produce and make butter and bread!

If I had children, they would be homeschooled so that is a lot of work to add to the schedule. And it won't be boring. I'd go on field trips with them a lot, trips to the museums, beaches, zoos and so many other places. I'd teach them how to cook which is always fun for them.

I'd also volunteer at church or some affiliated ministry too. That is always fun to do, because serving God is fun!

I'd also make some money out of my hobbies or donate them in service to God. I'd knit and crochet more useful things that people need or I can sell on Etsy or those craft fairs.

I'd do Bible study, but maybe at the beach or park. Some of those places have covered areas you can rent, and then afterward maybe a byob of lunch so you can discuss the topic at hand.

There's a lot of fun things to do as a housewife!

My dad volunteered at the museum, he was there every Saturday, leaving mum behind. She resented that she had to stay at home. I only remember going to the museum a couple of times, and the zoo next door to the museum. Museum we could go for free as Dad drove the tram, but I don't recall going to the zoo much, maybe a couple of times in school. They would have parent helpers on those days.

I can't imagine my mum teaching us what we learned in school. It would have been outside her scope, as she only went up to primary school, before her mum made her work to earn money for the family.
God no, teaching me to cook..never happened, I always made a mess. Also our kitchen was too small, and there were 4 of us.
Being stuck with mum all day and being in a class with my siblings I can't imagine. How would I make friends?

Maybe it just seems like a grandmother could do all the fun housewife things, but an actual mother wouldn't. Stay at home mothers have to deal with cleaning, cooking, washing, with little to no budget, and disciplining children, though I was thinking it depends on how many children and what ages apart they are.

I don't think it's boring being a housewife, but I think few women get to be because they actually can't afford not to work. Mortgage and bills and food isn't cheap! If you have a pension, you can do all the fun things and not worry too much about money as your house would have been paid off by then (hopefully) and your grandchildren probably don't live with you. If they do be prepare for the house to be a mess.

I remember watching the tv series Desperate Housewives back in the day.
I watched it with my flatmate, who wasn't a wife because she was separated from her partner and he didn't marry her, but he did give her a house, in which I sort of boarded - she needed the money. She and I both worked. Her children stayed with her half the time, and their dad the other half.

Anyway she thought it was hilarious because they were all having dramas on the show, and she thought it was totally unrealistic.
But I can imagine, this is what life is like for (rich) housewives living in a place like Wisteria Lane.

Lynette was who most women identified with because her husband kept on having children with her, maybe at least five, and she was constantly overwhelmed with all the housework and what came with raising children. Like it never ended. And her husband was pretty useless, just leaving her alone to do all the labour and work at home, while he went to 'work', earned the money, and hardly did anything. lol

I'm a SAHM of 10. Homeschooling my kids. Eldest two kiddos are adults and one of'em is working/saving to move to his dream location.

Can be chaotic and overwhelming at times but husband takes over bedtime routine and let's me relax.

Only drama I have is when the 3 year old somehow manages to flood the toilet. 😆

Do you have big home? Or they share bedrooms?

How many bathrooms? I think of logistics that's all.

I can't remember having a bedtime routine, I think it was just toilet, bath, brush teeth, put on pyjamas and go to bed. I'm sure once I got old enough to do that by myself I didn't need to be told! I'd just get yelled at if I stayed up all night reading books by mum.
My dad worked evening shifts so he was never home till 1'oclock in the morning, and he didn't have dinner with us either.

Let us consider what the Lord said to Martha, saying Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things: But one thing is needful: and Mary (Martha's sister) has chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her. What is that "good part"? that Mary "heard His Word"; this is what Martha lacked, which is why she was complaining.
As for isolation: Even the Lord Jesus (whom we are to follow) tells us that although all forsoke Him, yet He (He said) I am not alone; but the Father is with me. So also we must needs know that even when we are alone the Lord is with us.

My mother was a Martha, always complaining to me. She said I read the Bible too much. She worried about me ALL the time.
Not everyone follows Jesus..you can't really make a family member follow Him if they don't want to.

I don't think Jesus cared for housework that much cos He didn't even have a house. Or a wife for that matter. He was pretty much homeless, and his Fathers house on earth (the Temple) wasn't a house of prayer, people were using it like a mall, selling merchandise and attracting thieves.

I'm sure he just slept in people's garages or stables as they were in those days if they didn't have anywhere to stay the night. He'd nap on the ship through a storm, so he could sleep anywhere.

The disciples gave up their homes to follow Jesus. Granted they only did that for 3 or so years, but they didn't' establish a base or HQ while they did so, they mostly lived on their fishing boats and stayed other places, like boarding houses, or other homes that offered hospitality. Otherwise how could they do their ministries? Paul was a tentmaker, he must have lived in tents as well.

They couldn't have been paying rent and taxes while they did this. I think their only expenses would have been food...they could just borrow everything else, including donkeys. Peter found money to pay Caesars tribute in a fish.

It was the Levites priesthood who originally looked after the house of God and they relied on everyone else for income - tithes which was food people would bring from their harvest and animal sacrifices. As they couldn't work the land, being so busy maintaining the house of God It would have been so expensive, to sustain. Jesus predicted it would be destroyed, and it was. The Romans sacked and burned it.

At least they didn't have to pay heating bills. Just a lot of candles/oil for lighting the lampstands. It wouldn't have gotten too cold to go outside in the Middle East, it would have been too hot.

I'm retired, military, private security, preacher, and my wife still works as a home nurse.
I take care of the house, what I can with my disability. I do usually drive her to work and home, sometimes if she needs to see a patient I'll drive here.
I have a garage and a motorcycle I still ride. Couple days a week, (depending on how I'm doing), I still shoot Sporting Clays and Trap.
Read a lot as well.
I am blessed

Do you get given a mansion as part of the GI bill or something?
Cos I've heard of something like that. In NZ veterans did get housing but they would have been state houses, which are kind of like mansions to some people. But they are not the huge mansions that require a lot of servants and upkeep.

Most houses here are 3 bedrooms, sometimes 4 if it's been extended.
A mansion would be roomy house with at least 5 or more bedrooms and the same number of bathrooms.

Yes to reading a lot when stay at home if chores are done, and spouse is at work. And no children, but often have pets to look after.

5 bedroom (we split a giant room into 2, it was originally a 4 bed house). Only 2 bathrooms. Definitely could use more toilets. Lol.
The 3 eldest (2 of whom are adults) get their own rooms and pay a small rent for that privilege. 3 of the girls share a big room and 3 little boys are in the living room (bunkbeds and all). Baby is with me and husband.
When our 19 year old moves out (if all goes according to his plan) we'll move the boys to his room and reclaim the living room. 😆

As in aside, we definitely need more space. Have thought about making a tiny home on our property for the eldest but until we have the money we all just kind of squeeze together and make do.

Your mansion is the hospital then.
Oh but hold on, your wife is a nurse, does that mean when you're sick/ill she nurses you as well ...for free? She's a home nurse, who doesn't work in her own home? Or does she?

I think with a big family you're always needing more space as children grow. When they are little it's not so bad but reaching teen years can be a hard time for everyone. Hormones!
A lot of teens just live in the garage which can double as a sleep-out -- the cars are just parked on the driveway.

Yea 2 bathrooms for 10-12 people, I mean if its evenly split between genders ok, but imagine if you had all girls.

but then I spare a thought of how it used to be for many people who lived in the last century and they didn't live in the new suburbs, they lived in block houses which had outhouses, and shared bathrooms/toilets with the whole street. Who cleaned those toilets?
If they had no indoor plumbing or running water, did they just get it from the communal tap? Before toilets were invented, everyone just went in a chamber pot thing and the night soil men carted them away every night. I don't know where they put them...used the manure as fertiliser? Buried it?
