I try to live as righteous a life as possible since being baptised and try to live a sinless life. But I still have problems with things like swearing and smoking mainly. I wish God would speak to me directly so I know where I'm at spiritually because if theres no hope in making it to heaven then I may as well just live recklessly right?

If you judge your christianity according to sinlessness you will alwayd have doubts.
Strangely, as long as you have heartfelt consciousness of sin before God it is proof you are still saved.

That depends on whether or not you want to prolong your stay in hell.

Wrong. If you are born again, heaven is your home, not your destination. God knows that we cannot live the righteous life. He gives us Jesus to be our life. Lord Jesus has no problem living the life that pleases God. Allow Lord Jesus to take control. You will begin to change day by day. Stay close, confess your sins and be diligent in studying God's word.

Hello seymourclear,

The good news is that God speaks to you with more sure words than even an audible voice. Peter heard God the Father speak to His only begotten Son.

And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
2 Peter 1:18

This short message will address you clearly about that. It's simpler than most think.

If your aim is to know 100% you will go to heaven when you die, you are living self-centeredly and probably won’t make it. If you believe God is like Jesus, and you aim to know Him better and to please Him now by treating others as you would want to be treated if you were in their circumstances, you will get there without being perfect, by trusting Him to behave like Jesus.. Jesus is the brighteness of God’s glory and the express image of His person (Heb. 1:3)

It's not about what you do, it's about how you feel in your heart.
If you're watching a movie with a kind and uplifting superhero, but he happens to smoke and swear, is he a bad guy then?
No, but his smoking and swearing is justified.

If you don't hurt people needlessly with those sins, there's no worry about if they'll impede your access to heaven.
If you're worried about what smoking does to your personal health, well, look at all the past generations and how they prevailed with what they had.
It's better if you don't smoke anything mass-produced from a tobacco company imo, that stuff they put out is poison.

Where did you get the idea that this was the path?
Who told you this?

There are TWO main commandments we follow.....

1)Love God with all your heart, mind, and strength
2)Love your neighbor as much as yourself.

Notice how smoking and cussing are not mentioned? Now neither of those things are. Exactly great ideas....they hurt you. So cutting back on them is ALWAYS a good idea. (You are supposed to like yourself)
Everything God wants from us hinges on these two laws....everything.
Everything is permissible but not everything is beneficial....only do the beneficial stuff....because you like yourself and others.

Although swearing and smoking are not good things, having problems with them won't keep you from heaven, and not doing them won't get you to heaven. Being saved and going to heaven is not about what we do or don't do, but about what Jesus Christ has done. That's why He is called the Saviour. He was crucified and rose again to enable those who believe in Him to go to heaven. If they could get there themselves by not smoking or swearing, and things like that, why did He bother? He said:

(Joh 6:47 NKJV) Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

"He who believes in Me," not "He who gives up things like smoking and swearing."

Your entry into Gods perfect eternal existence is not dependent on your being a good person living without any blemishes ( sins )

Your salvation depends on you believing Jesus and TRUSTING in the Atonement Jesus secured by His death on the cross, His death pays the penalty for the sins of all who trust that His death pays for their sins..

So if you can have faith in the righteousness of Jesus Himself then you can be supremely confident because your not placing your confidence in your faulty self.. Your placing it in the Perfect LORD Jesus..

If you are relying on your actions to ensure that you get into heaven, then you will always have doubts. But if you place your trust into the loving God, the doubts will vanish

If you're worried about what smoking does to your personal health, well, look at all the past generations and how they prevailed with what they had.

It's not that I'm worried that smoking will affect my health because at the moment I don't feel it does. It's just a habit that I've had for over 30 years now and the in the bible in Luke 9:23 it says that we are to deny ourselves, like withstand everything that we know to be sinful and earthly desires.

There are no examples of people smoking in the Bible so I'm assuming that smoking stems from pagan traditions. And certainly none of the Israelites or disciples ever smoked. And Paul says in Ephesians 4:29: "do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths."

Basically I don't want to fall short of the glory of God and not receive grace. I pray everyday for my sins to be forgiven but does that then make it okay to carry on doing it and expect to be forgiven although 1john 1:9 does say: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us from all unrighteousness."
But in Hebrews 10:26 it also says: "if we deliberately keep on sinning after we've received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, but only a fearful expectation of judgement and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God."

In the last 2 years I've overcome drug addiction, alcoholism, sexual immorality and many other things with God's help and guidance. So I know that I can overcome anything if I really try hard. Me swearing is what I was brought up hearing and then repeating because growing up no-one ever told me it was wrong until God did through the Bible.

And for example if I drop something or hit my self on something the natural words that come out of my mouth are usually swear words. So it's just another bad habit that I'm constantly aware of and asking God's forgiveness for.

I just don't wanna die today and God say to me that because I carried on doing these things even though I knew them to be wrong, or didn't feel like I could control myself enough then he'd say that I didn't have enough faith in him and then tell me: "I never knew you" like in Matthew 7:23

What it is, is that I want to live up to God's expectations but am always questioning whether I'm good enough for his grace and mercy.

I don’t think any of us can be 100 percent sure. It’s something we won’t find out until the time comes. In the meantime, we can repeat with the Prodigal Son, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”

One last detail. Is smoking a sin? I'm pretty sure I’ve never heard that before. Swearing, yes but smoking, no.

Swearing may not be an actual commandment but it is definitely mentioned throughout the New Testament like in Ephesians 4:29, 5:4 and Colossians 3:8. And guaranteed it's mentioned in the the Old Testament Proverbs.

Smoking is just not mentioned at all in the Bible but obviously it's not beneficial to the body therefore making it an intoxicant I would imagine so I doubt very much that God condones it.

Do you really think that a person is self centered just because they want to know 100% whether they will go to heaven or not? and that they would likely not make it to heaven?

Where in the Bible does it say this or give that impression?

Here's a short that just happened to get posted from a preacher that also answers your question. I think the Lord wanted him to make this video to be a blessing to you even though only the Lord read your post.

I was in your shoes with the same thoughts when I was a teenager. God provided me a soul winner who gave me a clear answer from the Bible.
" 30The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise. "
Proverbs 11

If you don't condemn anyone for swearing over an injury or having a cigarette, then God won't condemn you for them either.
If God condemned people for those things alone, there would be a lot less saints in heaven than there are now.
The plants you smoke are just herbs that have some effect on your body. Pagans might have gone delusional and made something corrupt over it, but God established what everything does from the beginning. If your actions aren't leading you astray, there's nothing to worry about.

If God's telling you it's ideal to quit something, then by all means do it. But if by His mercy He's giving you to ease off it, because some more dramatic effect might happen if you quit cold turkey, then by all means obey that too.

Sinful behavior is not evidence that someone is unsaved; it is evidence that we are still living on this side of eternity. Every believer carries remnants of the old nature, and habits like swearing or smoking are simply examples of the slow, uneven process of moral growth. The Holy Spirit does help us improve our behavior over time, but that is not His primary work. His main role is to teach us to recognize, love, and cling to the truth about God and about ourselves. When a person is learning the truth, wanting the truth, and returning to the truth even after failure, they are doing exactly what God expects of someone in whom His Spirit dwells.

God does not ordinarily speak to us directly—not because He cannot, but because He has chosen a wiser and more revealing method. He teaches us about ourselves through testing. In testing, our real loyalties, desires, and endurance come to the surface. We learn whether we run toward God or away from Him, whether we cling to hope or abandon it, whether we trust His promises or trust our impulses. These tests are not punishments; they are disclosures. Through them, God shows us who we are becoming and whether His Spirit is truly shaping our inner life. A person who keeps returning to God in the struggle, who refuses to give up, who wants righteousness even while stumbling—that person is already displaying the marks of someone whom God has sanctified and will save without exception.

If we define “heaven” as the transcendent dwelling of God—the realm where no creature can enter—then Scripture never speaks of humans “going to heaven.” The biblical hope is not escape to God’s realm but the resurrection of the dead and life in the renewed creation. Paradise, the realm of angels and the righteous dead, is real, but it is not the final goal. The New Testament consistently directs our hope toward the day when God raises His people, restores creation, and dwells with them. So when someone asks whether they will “go to heaven,” the deeper and more accurate question is whether they belong to the God who will raise them and give them a share in His future.

God does not leave us guessing about that future by measuring our ability to be sinless. Sinful behavior is normal for every believer in the present age; the remnants of the old nature cling to us until resurrection. The Holy Spirit does help us grow in holiness, but His primary work is to anchor us in the truth—teaching us to love God’s Word, to return to Him after failure, and to desire righteousness even when we stumble. A person who keeps coming back to the truth is doing exactly what God expects of someone He has sanctified.

And while God does not ordinarily speak to us directly, He does reveal who we are through testing. Testing exposes our real loyalties: whether we cling to God or drift from Him, whether we endure or abandon hope, whether we trust His promises or trust our impulses. These tests are not threats but disclosures. Through them, God shows us whether His Spirit is truly shaping our inner life. Someone who refuses to give up, who wants righteousness even while struggling, is already displaying the marks of a person whom God has sanctified—and all whom He sanctifies, He will save without exception.
