Rev 12.1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.

The Woman appears to be Israel since she has 12 stars and has not yet given birth to her son, who is Christ. This refers, primarily, to believing Israel since her destiny is to be a nation of faith.

However, at the time Israel gave "birth" to Christ she was hardly godly. So, the emphasis is on the son, who “will rule all the nations with an iron scepter.”

Rev 12.5 And her child was snatched up to God and to his throne. 6 The woman fled into the wilderness to a place prepared for her by God, where she might be taken care of for 1,260 days.

This scene is here looking forward from the time of Christ's ascension to the endtime period of Antichrist's rule, which is to be 1,260 days. But in the interim we are told that there is war in heaven among the angels.

Rev 12.7 Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. 8 But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9 The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him.

Satan has always opposed the people of God. However, now that Christ has ascended into heaven, and is destined to rule the earth, Satan wants to oppose the coming Kingdom on earth. We see this in Dan 7, where the "Little Horn," ie the Antichrist, persecutes God's people prior to the coming of the Son of Man from heaven to set up God's Kingdom.

Rev 12.12 But woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”

The NT period is filled with Satanic fury, with many antichrists rising to oppose God's people, whether pagan barbarians, Muslim hordes, or Communist aggressors. It is all headed towards the final opposition of Antichrist for 3.5 years before the Son of Man returns with the clouds.

This time is called "short" for Satan. However, it is a long NT era. It is "short" relative to eternity, where Satan will be eternally separated from God's people.

Rev 12.13 When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time, out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.

Note that the Woman, who seems to be Israel, had fled into the wilderness. This is similar to how Israel fled the ancient Egyptians into the Desert of Sinai. It is also similar to the NT escape of Jewish believers from the 70 AD judgment against Jerusalem. They fled into the wilderness at Pella.

But this appears to represent the Jewish Diaspora, since this period sits between the ascension of Christ and the 1260 days of Antichristian rule. Believing Jews are protected by the "two wings of a great eagle." Among the Christian nations there has been protection for the Jewish People that has preserved a place for faith among those people. Today, the US is a "great eagle" of sorts, protecting Israel in her "wilderness experience."

The "river" the serpent spews out appears to be antisemitism, in the form of political parties and armies that have sought to destroy both the Jews and the home of the Jews in Israel. But every time the Jews faced annihilation the "earth swallowed up the river." The persecutors were destroyed.

The "rest of the Woman's offspring" are those beyond Christ himself who are spiritual children of Israel, both Jew and non-Jew. These are they who in our time are opposed by Satan and who will ultimately triumph over the Antichrist.

Hello @randyk .

I prefer a more chronological approach when interpreting Revelation 12. Also, I like to interpret with more of a 'Meat of the Word' meaning:

Revelation 12:1 -And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

The woman is a literal person, not a symbol of Israel. More specifically, the woman is whoever has dominion over the Promised Seed (i.e., the Messiah) at any given time. Thus, she is not just one woman but many.

The first woman to carry the Promised Seed was of course Eve, however Revelation 12 begins with Sarah. The symbolism is as follows:
  • Moon = Mother
  • Sun = Father
  • Stars = Children
What Scripture is teaching here is about the moment of conception between Sarah and Abraham. The result is Abraham's Seed.

Revelation 12:2 - And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

Sarah gives birth to Isaac, the Seed of Abraham that will ultimately lead to the birth of the Messiah.

Revelation 12:3 - And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

The Dragon is of course Satan. The Seven Heads represent the various kings from the King of Egypt to the final Antichrist.

Revelation 12:4 - And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

The 'falling stars' are fallen angels that will work with Satan to try and destroy Abraham's Seed. The above verse is around the time of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Revelation 12:5 - And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Just as the woman represents all of the mothers who carried the Promised Seed, the manchild represents all of the fathers that carried the Promised Seed until the birth of Jesus, who as we know was crucified and caught up to the throne of God.

Revelation 12:6 - And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

The wilderness is the one that the Israelites fled to some 1260 years before the birth of the Messiah. The 'place prepared' is the Tabernacle in the Wilderness, i.e., the symbolic body of the Messiah. Jesus is taken care of like a baby for 1260 years. He is nourished and fed by the Israelites until his birth. Little did they know that they were ministering to their God.

Revelation 12:7 - And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels

It is important to understand that Scripture describes Michael fighting many wars throughout history. This is not a 'one time event' as so many wrongly assume. Again, the war being described here happened around the time of Sodom and Gomorra.

Revelation 12:10 - And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

The Melchizedek Blessing kicked off the beginning of Abraham's Seed. Satan was furious and wanted to corrupt and or destroy the bloodline. This can be seen all throughout the Old Testament. Think of Pharaoh as the Dragon.

Revelation 12:11 - And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

The Blood of the Lamb was painted on the doorposts and lintels. Death was overcome. The Israelites loved not their lives as they wandered for forty years in the wilderness.

Revelation 12:14 - And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.

This would again be the Exodus. Abraham's Seed, via the Tabernacles and Temples, was nourished for 1260 years until his birth.

Revelation 12:15 - And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

The above verse is 'Meat of the Word' symbolism. In other words, God is using euphemism to describe the 'Seed of the Serpent' that is cast out of the 'mouth' to impregnate the woman and corrupt her Seed.

Revelation 12:17 - And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Again, THIS IS A SEED WAR. It is a war of GENETICS. Revelation 12 is all about Satan trying to corrupt the Seed of the Woman that began with Eve in the Garden. The word 'seed' in the above verse is 'sperma':

After 1260 years from the time Moses built the first Tabernacle, Jesus is born.

Thirty years later, at 1290, Jesus begins his ministry.

Forty-five years after that, at 1335, Jerusalem is destroyed.

Thus, there was a total of 1335 years from the first Temple to the last Temple.

It was always about Abraham's Seed...

The woman is Israel.

The child is Jesus.

God is love and loves all people but one day He has to end sin on earth.

So He is going to give the world 7 years to have their way to cause all people who do not love the truth to follow the antichrist.

God is going to restore the kingdom on earth back to Israel so they are protected for the 7 years from physical attack.

Which when the antichrist starts working in the world the nations will come together to work for peace which will pave the way for all Hebrews to go to Israel which they will cause it to happen.

Chapter 12 is the 7 years period.

Rev 12:1 And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars:

Israel and the 12 tribes.

Rev 12:2 And she being with child cried, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered.

Jesus that came from Israel.

Rev 12:3 And there appeared another wonder in heaven; and behold a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads.

Rev 13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.

The 7 heads Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, Greece, Roman Empire, 10 horn kingdom the world divided in to 10 sections with a leader in each section.

In chapter 12 the crowns are on the heads Satan in the spiritual realm deceiving people by the 7 kingdoms.

In chapter 13 the crowns are on the horns Satan in the physical realm deceiving people.

Rev 12:4 And his tail drew the third part of the stars of heaven, and did cast them to the earth: and the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born.

Rev 12:5 And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

Jesus who will rule the earth in the millennial reign.

Rev 12:6 And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Israel is protected for the first 3.5 years.

Rev 12:7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,
Rev 12:8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

The start of the last 3.5 years.

Which for the first 3.5 years salvation is still available to the world.

Rev 9:20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Rev 9:21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

At the end of the first 3.5 years the world does not turn to God so He gives them the antichrist to rule over them.

Rev 18:2 And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying, Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is become the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit, and a cage of every unclean and hateful bird.

2Th 2:8 And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming:
2Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,
2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
2Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:
2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.

The devils will be cast to earth which becomes their holding cell.

Satan will appear as the antichrist and the devils will deceive all people who do not love the truth which is the strong delusion God will send them.

The Bible says that Babylon will never have physical dominion again but her life was prolonged for a time and a season which means their ways are still on earth.

Which Babylon fallen and the beast kingdom referred to as Babylon is Babylon in spirit.

Which she represents human religion, the occult, and the kingdom of man.

Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.
Rev 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
Rev 12:12 Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them. Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.
Rev 12:13 And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.
Rev 12:14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.
Rev 12:15 And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood.

Israel is protected for the last 3.5 years from physical attack.

Rev 12:16 And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.
Rev 12:17 And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Rev 13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.

Dan 7:25 And he shall speak great words against the most High, and shall wear out the saints of the most High, and think to change times and laws: and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and the dividing of time.

Dan 12:7 And I heard the man clothed in linen, which was upon the waters of the river, when he held up his right hand and his left hand unto heaven, and sware by him that liveth for ever that it shall be for a time, times, and an half; and when he shall have accomplished to scatter the power of the holy people, all these things shall be finished.

The antichrist persecutes all people who accept the truth.

Zec 12:2 Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.
Zec 12:3 And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

Zec 14:1 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.
Zec 14:2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.
Zec 14:3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
Zec 14:5 and the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.

Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.
Zec 14:12 And this shall be the plague wherewith the LORD will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth.
Zec 14:16 And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

The world will attack Israel after the 7 years period where Jesus defeats the world and saves Israel and rules the earth.

Quite interesting and unique perspective. Whether I fully agree or not, there's a lot there to learn from. Thanks.

Note, same texts, and three different interpretations thus far in. Consider this, God is the creator of apocalyptic prophecy, ( Daniel and Revelation). All of His creation is governed by His natural laws. If the three of you understood them and applied them correctly then your interpretations would be quite similar, for you certainly would agree that God has only one true meaning of all of His prophecies. Therefore, to understand their true interpretation one must understand and apply these laws, which would counter ones individual bias, allowing the prophecies to speak the truth. Dos this sound logical to you all?

Would you be interested in seeing them?

60. Now, concerning the tribulation of the persecution which is to fall upon the Church from the adversary, John also speaks thus: And I saw a great and wondrous sign in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars. And she, being with child, cries, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered. And the dragon stood before the woman which was ready to be delivered, for to devour her child as soon as it was born. And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she has the place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

And then when the dragon saw it, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man- child. And to the woman were given two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. And the serpent cast (out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. And the earth helped the woman, and opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast) out of his mouth. And the dragon was angry with the woman, and went to make war with the saints of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus.

61. By the woman then clothed with the sun, he meant most manifestly the Church, endued with the Father's word, whose brightness is above the sun. And by the moon under her feet he referred to her being adorned, like the moon, with heavenly glory. And the words, upon her head a crown of twelve stars, refer to the twelve apostles by whom the Church was founded. And those, she, being with child, cries, travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered, mean that the Church will not cease to bear from her heart the Word that is persecuted by the unbelieving in the world.

And she brought forth, he says, a man-child, who is to rule all the nations; by which is meant that the Church, always bringing forth Christ, the perfect man-child of God, who is declared to be God and man, becomes the instructor of all the nations. And the words, her child was caught up unto God and to His throne, signify that he who is always born of her is a heavenly king, and not an earthly; even as David also declared of old when he said, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, until I make Your enemies Your footstool. And the dragon, he says, saw and persecuted the woman which brought forth the man- child.

And to the woman were given two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent. That refers to the one thousand two hundred and threescore days (the half of the week) during which the tyrant is to reign and persecute the Church, which flees from city to city, and seeks conceal-meat in the wilderness among the mountains, possessed of no other defense than the two wings of the great eagle, that is to say, the faith of Jesus Christ, who, in stretching forth His holy hands on the holy tree, unfolded two wings, the right and the left, and called to Him all who believed upon Him, and covered them as a hen her chickens. For by the mouth of Malachi also He speaks thus: And unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in His wings.

And to the woman were given two wings of the great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness...

Scripture interprets Scripture:

Exodus 19:4 - Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles’ wings, and brought you unto myself.

That would be the wilderness the Israelites fled to after the Exodus.

...from the face of the serpent...

Who is the Dragon in this context?

Ezekiel 29:3 - Speak, and say, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I am against thee, Pharaoh king of Egypt, the great dragon that lieth in the midst of his rivers, which hath said, My river is mine own, and I have made it for myself.

You have it from the Word of God, not me.

Yea, Hippolytus and Irenaeus viewed the 70th Week of Daniel as future, against the majority view of the Church Fathers who viewed the 70 Weeks as expired in the time of Christ's earthly ministry with the succeeding destruction of Jerusalem. His views are to be respected, but not taken as "Gospel." As much as the Church Fathers had a bird's eye view of the Scriptures, being closer to their writing in time, they lack the view we have in the modern world regarding current events. We can see the entire stretch of history leading up to our days, and may interpret things better in that regard.

Is Matthew's 'prophesies' included?
They are not, because they are not apocalyptic prophecies. A apocalyptic prophecy is defined as a prophecy that has a begininng and ending point in time and each event within that prophecy is given by God in its chronological order because God knows the beginning from the end. Example, Dan. 2. Thus these prophecies hold greater knowledge in understand where we are with respect to the second coming.

Great, since the pathway to greater understanding is an open mind. I will share what I have learned from Larry Wilson's book, " Jesus Final Victory", available on Amazon. Have read many of his books and I belief he has a better understanding on closing events than anyone I've know to date, or taught by any religion, including mine. He was nodenominational, pasted away three years ago.

Understand this, these four laws are not written out in the Bible, nor are any of God's natural laws governing His creation written anywhere. They have all been revealed to individuals by the Holy Spirit, to those who study in various fields of study and according to God's timing. However, when discovered the individual will make the law know to others in their field of study so that they can be verified by others, and if verified they become know laws, which have no exceptions. Example the law of gravity, has no exception here on earth, and does not depend on ones understanding of it---or not.

The four laws found in fulfilled apocalyptic prophecy are:

1- Each apocalyptic prophecy has an beginning and ending point in time, and the events within that prophecy are given in their chronological order, by God, since He knows the beginning from the end. Example Daniel 2.

2- A prophecy or prophetic event within a prophecy is not fulfilled until all of the specifications are met. This includes the order of events given within the prophecy.

3- Apocalyptic language can be literal, symbolic, or analogous. To reach the intended meaning of a passage, one must consider (a) the contexts, (b) the use of parallel language in the Bible, and (c) a relevant text that deines the symbol if an element is thought to be symbolic.

4- The presence or absence of the Jubilee Calendar determines how God measures time. If a prophetic time period occurs during the operation of the Jubilee Calendar (1437-B.C.- 1994), time is translated as a day for a year, otherwise, translation is not permitted.

I hope you recognize that these laws force the prophecies, if followed to speak for themselves. And is this not what we wish to know?

Do you understand the laws that are the foundation of the interpretation you hold?

Keep in mind that Irenaeus was taught by Polycarp , a disciple and hearer of Apostle john.

Yes, I have lots of respect for Irenaeus. I don't have to agree, however, with everything he says. I have to respect others, as well, who equally have carried on in the apostolic tradition.

Aw man. I wish I had better news for you. I downloaded the book and found too many things I disagree with.

I don't wish to derail OP's thread, so I will chill for now.

Understand your reasoning, and agree. You could start a new thread, or I could give you my email and you could share the things that you disagree with, as I would like to know exactly and for what reasons. Sure to be an interesting conversation for us both, and educational. Up to you.
