I have been going through a lot of things in my life over the past year or so and God led me to Fast and Pray. I was just seeking encouragement on this and wondered if anybody has done any fasting and if so how long and what type? I am new to the site so hello and thanks for sharing any comments:)

I get very sick if I don’t get enough to eat. (I’ve come to believe it is due to low blood sugar.) However, I suppose a lot of people do fast.

Three days is good without food, third day is the best you want to keep going. You can fast one or two meals a day or all. Also fast from things you really
enjoy. It is awesome as your spirit man gets closer to the Lord. Ps drink water, our preacher said God honors even one meal or soda, but the three day
is great, praying and reading his word, just supping with him and being in his presence
Bless you

I feel God calling me on a 7 day fast and I keep getting to the second and 3rd day and keep quitting my fast! I need some strongholds torn down in my life that He can only help me with! Just kind of discouraged but it is all in His hands! He knows every hair that is on my head!

Fasting is GOOD !I find it takes about three days water only reading the bible and praying for HIM to help us make it ! satan comes hard against us on the 2nd day !he does not want us walking in GOD POWER ! Hearing GOD perfectly ! talking back and forth with our Father GOD !
We might well see the signs and wonders in our life then ? Fasting causes us to break every yoke anything that has held us back from serving HIM perfectly ! brings healing to our flesh and HE comes and talks with us !

Isa 58:6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
Isa 58:8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.
Isa 58:9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.

I know someone who has never made the three week mark... 17-18 days...before breaking fast yet desires to go the 21 days. They enthusiactically report that fasting hardly ever changes the circumstances but sure does change THEM and highly improves the vertical relationship with God. They prefer full fast for short 3-10 days and some juice for longer. Be encouraged.

Fasting is just giving up something for a while to make more room for God. It does not have to be food.

As member of Orthodox Church i will tell u this.

After Prayer, fasting is the second ascetic practice we should begin as part of an Orthodox way of life. Of course if we do not have sufficient faith to participate in the regular worship services, to participate in the sacraments, or time for daily prayer, fasting will not be of much help to us. Fasting is a practice that was shown to us by Jesus as well as the prophets of the Old Testament, the Apostles, and the Church Fathers up to modern times. Fasting is a discipline that directly attacks the bodily passions that dominate the soul leading us to behaviors that lead us away from God. Fasting is not a virtue but a means towards a virtuous life.

The Church in her wisdom has provided for us weekday fasting on Wednesday and Friday as well as fasting periods such as Great Lent. These are times throughout the year where we can focus on our spiritual life and double our efforts in prayer and worship.

On the outward level fasting involves physical abstinence from food and drink, and without such exterior abstinence a full and true fast cannot be kept; yet the rules about eating and drinking must never be treated as an end in themselves, for ascetic fasting always has an inward and unseen purpose. Fasting is not a mere matter of diet. It is moral as well as physical. In the words of St. John Chrysostom, it means “abstinence not only from food but from sins”.

St. Theophan the Recluse on Fasting

“Not that which goeth into the mouth defileth
a man; but that which cometh
out of the mouth, this defileth a man.”(Маt.
15:11) The Lord did not say this because he did not approve of fasting or because he considered fasting unnecessary – indeed, He Himself fasted, and taught His disciples to do so, and established fasts in His Holy Church. He said this, then, not to discourage fasting. Rather, he says it to teach us that when we fast we should not limit ourselves merely to eating little and avoiding cooked foods, but should also refrain from indulging the appetites and passionate inclinations of the soul. This is, of course the most important thing. Fasting, in its turn, serves a powerful means of accomplishing this. The passions are rooted in the flesh. When the flesh is weakened through fasting, then it is as if the fortress of the passions has been undermined, and its strength crumbles. On the other hand, to overcome the passions without fasting would be as remarkable as standing in a fire without being burnt. How is it possible for one who continually indulges his flesh with food, sleep and rest to maintain any sort of attention and purpose in spiritual matters? For such a one to turn from the earth, directing his attention to invisible things and striving them, is just as difficult as it is for an enfeebled bird to rise up from the earth.

Hey brothers and sisters,
I am having huge struggles in my marriage and in my life, with my health... so many things. im a canadian currently living in west africa with my husband and one year old son, i was so in love with the country when i first got here now i cannot stand it, im only here until immigration accepts my husband into canada so we can all go home together. I am stuck in this room 24/7 i do not leave because of things that have happened, and the negativity i constantly receive from people, people saying hi and then saying to give them money, and telling me ive grown fat, ive gained 25 pounds from having my son and never got exercising, because i do not go out because of reasons i will not say. But im just trapped, my husband is a drunk and smokes weed constantly, he is ignorant to me, he is cruel, he cheats... Im just done. I need to fast, God is calling me to do a 40 day fast but I just cant start it... i think that hardest part is starting it.. please give me encouragement, i know i can do it and i know i have to but ive been trying and trying and trying and failing. does anyone have any scripture to share for encouragement. or any of your own stories
Thank you

It's important to follow what is inside of you when fasting. The Lord leads us through our spirit and not in our minds or emotions ( Our minds can be renewed to truth and thus make things easier for us ).

Fasting doesn't make us more holy or "spiritual". Jesus has already done that.

I have fasted many times and I try to listen to when the Lord has me to do it. Fasting shuts down the body's constant demand for things and this allows our spirit to become more clear to us.

I have fasted up to 2 weeks without eating anything but drinking water and some green tea. I have done partial fasts as well where I would stop eating a certain type of food for a particular time frame.

There are no hard and fast rules other than to listen to your heart and from there the Lord will guide you in the way that you are to go. He has ways that are specific and unique between the both of you.

We start by one day at a time. There is only enough grace for today ( just like manna was for the Israelites ). His grace is all we need in every situation. We can trust Him in all things.
