The KJV has always had it as "the faith OF Jesus". But most (all?) of the newer versions have it as "the faith IN Jesus". The total opposite! Jesus faith for us extends all the way to where ... He intercedes for us before the Father. And our faith must last until our death.

The "hopeless condition" refers to people who cannot believe in Jesus and the Gospel on their own, i.e. without God's intervention. God must provide the faith to believe!
