"Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, Who also has sealed us and give us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee [KJV, earnest; pledge, betrothal]." 2 Cor. 1:21-22 NKJV.
1:21,22 Note again the NT roots of Orthodox sacramanental life. We are established in Christ (v. 21), through baptism and are anointed and sealed (v. 22) in the Spirit through chrismation." OSB page 1575.

Fr. Simon said in Church today that the Greek word "arrabon" or Slavonic "obrecheniye" signifies the idea of a pledge, downpayment, lay-away, promise to purchase, promise to marry, of marriage/betrothal.
