Hell is depicted as a place of eternal suffering and heaven as a place of eternal bliss, singing, rejoicing and halos. When you die you leave your body as an empty shell here on earth. If you lived this life as a sinner and go to the biblical hell of fire and brimstone, what is there left to burn?

We all get a new, eternal body when we rise. I Cor. 15, especially right around vs. 52.

Even the unbelievers will be raised to judgement in a body. Also it will not only be the body that suffers pain but also the soul which indicates hell has a non-material aspect as well.

I believe before Judgment Day and before the resurrection into their old bodies, the souls in hell will be burned/tortured in the spiritual form. Their spiritual body will indeed feel pain and thirst for water.
