Anyone know how to encrypt files on Vista?

It says its possible but windows help won't show me how. I read recently about computer maintenance workers and fixits who steal anything they can find off your computer and how some encryption can stop them. The Consumerist even caught them in the act. They rigged a laptop loaded with pornographic material to video itself and asked a certain famous digital store to download itunes onto the computer, but also caught the employee putting the material on his zip drive. The video is edited so you don't see any of the material, but you can see him move the files.
 
encryption won't keep people from COPYING/ STEALING files... it will just give them more work trying to decrypt them once they have them on their own computer. it does reduce the risk of "ordinary" people who dont kow how to decrypt files of getting them usable though

Word files can be encrypted via word itself

try googeling it, the method will mostlikely wary between XP, Vista and Win 7,

I see. Is the only alternative to store all files you want protected on an external hard drive? that would be annoying.. I have one, but I don't necessarily want to hook it up all the time.
 
You can copy / steal encrypted files as well :D

You could put your files on an external hd , but it would involve a lot of hassle in hooking it up every now and then .

Investing in a good all purpose anti - virus program would be a better option in my opinion .

You can still have your files just the way they are on your computer without encrypting or doing anything .
 
I have an antivirus program. I would be an idiot not to have one. lol But how does that protect me from someone copying files onto their zip drive if they are supposed to be fixing my computer?
 
You can password protect your files . There are tons of softwares out there that could do it.
I could send you the link if you want me to .

Or , wait . You can disable write access on your USB ports or set permissions to access drives . That's the most easiest , cheapest and effective way .
